Point of Sale software update makes life easier for retailers

The large community of retailers using the Point of Sale software from Tower Systems were early last week given access to a major Point of Sale software update containing an excellent suite of operational and organisational enhancements.

To help retailers make the most of the valuable POS software update, Tower Systems published a training video as well as an update specific comprehensive advice sheet … in addition to a comprehensive email outlining how to get the most of the update in any business.

By offering update support documentation across a number of mediums, Tower Systems is delivering to its customers information in a flexible and valuable way and thereby better serving the needs of the broad variety of small businesses it serves.

A week after the software update was released, the customer uptake has been strong.

The Tower approach is to let customers choose when they wish to install the update in their businesses. This gives tower customers more control.

Retailers need to take care of POS systems in the heat

Our POS software help desk has been receiving calls for help with heat related issues these past few days. While we have many system located in shopping malls, we also have many systems in high street shops and rural / regional locations. Many of these are not air conditioned.

Our advice for ensuring continued computer hardware use through extreme heat situations is:

  1. Maintain good airflow around the main computer box.
  2. Ensure the inside of the computer box is dust free. A can of compressed air can help with this.
  3. Remove papers any anything else from the top of the computer box.

Do these three things and you’ll be in better shape.

Cloud software customer service disconnect

Some small businesses experienced first-hand a challenge dealing with an offshore cloud software company last week when the US just about shutdown for the Thanksgiving weekend. Customer service was being operated with skeleton staff which businesses here in Australia were operating as usual.

This is a problem for cloud software businesses operating globally. They need to serve their customers when they need them. Closing for what is a local holiday is not appropriate.

We have been hosting another survey for newsagents this past weekend to harvest data relating to magazine supply – a matter dear to the heart of newsagents.

It is through offering valued services like this, beyond the newsagency software itself, that demonstrate genuine long-term commitment to marketplace. This is what software companies specialising in a marketplace need to do.  We can only do it through close contact with our customers.

While some software companies distance themselves from their customers through automated phone systems, email support and other tech type interfaces, we seek out more and more opportunities for authentic, live and valued interaction in each of the retail channels in which we serve. Tower Systems purchases MrNews newsagency software, reaffirms confidence in newspaper distribution businesses

Newsagency software company Tower Systems has agreed acquisition terms with the owners of the MrNews newsagency software business.

MrNews serves in excess of one hundred home delivery newsagents in Western Australia.

Tower Systems will assume full responsibility for the MrNews software and customer service from early next month.

“We will maintain the MrNews software, price model and support. MrNews users will not be pressured to switch” commented Tower Systems Managing Director Mark Fletcher. “Our development and help desk teams will be trained in MrNews so that we can provide easy access to quality support.”

“We are thrilled to have found a place where MrNews users can be confident of access to good software and service” commented Arno Staub and Graham Kilmurray, the owners of MrNews. “We are looking forward to working with Tower, training their people and introducing them to our happy customers.”

The Tower development team has been working with West Australian Newspapers to be ready to support changes to their home delivery management and account payment model.

The acquisition, the second of a newsagency software company this year by Tower Systems extends its newsagent customer numbers to more than 1,900. The next largest newsagency software company is POS Solutions with an estimated 600 newsagents as customers.

“Newsagents concerns about T2020 and other challenges facing home delivery should see this investment by us as a show of faith in the newsagency marketplace and home delivery in particular.” Commented Mark Fletcher

The Tower software serves newsagents in newspaper distribution, sub agent management, retail management, stock control, theft management and supplier integration.

With consolidation of newsagency businesses and newsagent suppliers very much in play, this acquisition is not expected to be the last in the newsagency software space.

Tower Systems is soon to advertise its Point of Sale software on television as part of a national brand awareness campaign.

The TVC connects with enhancements to our website, direct mail advertising and engagement by our sales teams. It also reinforces our commitment to specialist marketplaces: jewellers, bike retailers, gift shops, newsagents, homewares shops, book retailers, adult shops, garden centres, nurseries and gun shops.

Professionally produced through an advertising agency, the thirty-second TVC will start airing next week for a ten day run.

Planning for newsagency software enhancements

We along with some other newsagency software companies will be meeting with XchangeIT and other stakeholders in Sydney early next month to discuss XchangeIT, the EDI gateway used by some newsagency suppliers.

We are pleased to see that the first topic to be discussed with be newsagency magazine distributor statement reconciliation.  We have been pushing for this to be revisited given the considerable time saving opportunities for newsagents if it is delivered.

We will share details of software enhancements to be facilitates as a result of XchangeIT changes once they are known.

The serial number tracking services available through our Point of Sale software are proving to be invaluable in a range of retail situations.

Using serial number tools, retailers are able to track individual items sold to meet regulatory record-keeping requirements as well as track items for the benefit of the customer and the business in terms of warraty and other future activity around a specific item purchased.

Developed with jeweller and bike shop retailers originally, the serial number tracking tools in our POS software have been enhanced to meet evolving needs of retailers. We have ensured that the facilities meet needs of more retail channels, giving them peace of mind that they can track sales at the item level for reporting to authorities, suppliers, warranty providers and customers.

Serial number tracking requires accuracy and focus in serving the needs of the retailer, customer and other parties. Achieving this without negatively impacting the traffic flow at the counter is a challenge we address in our software.

We are advanced in the development of a new loyalty facility for retailers using our Point of Sale software.

This new facility has been developed with several customers as well as our own retail shops. We are very excited to be close to delivering something fresh and exciting which retailers will be able to use to bring shoppers back sooner than usual.

The new facilities are best practice, valuable and certain to drive greater bottom line success for our retail partners.

This new facility is something others will want to copy. Indeed they will have to copy it to be competitive.  We will live with this knowing that innovation has its costs and copying is one of those.

Working with police to cut theft in retail using smart POS software

We have been working with police and other authorities on theft matters in two states this week. Each case has taken up considerable time as we have sourced evidence to be used in cases being pursued against the accused, evidence that will stand the test of cross examination in court.

Each time we do this work we learn more about the processes of the police and, through this, ways we can guide and help our retail business customers to better manage their businesses for theft minimisation.

Next week, a senior member of our team will be in court on behalf of the prosecution as an expert witness.
