Why Tower Systems does not charge for extra POS terminals

W

Ask a POS software company what an extra terminal costs. The answer tells you a lot about how they price.

Some companies charge for their software based on how many terminals are connected to it. Add a terminal and you pay for more than the hardware, you pay more for the software too.

Tower Systems does not charge per terminal

Here at Tower Systems, adding a terminal costs nothing extra. A retailer running the software on one computer pays the same as a retailer running it on 8 computers in one location.

The price is published on the Tower Systems pricing page. Anyone can check it.

Tower also does not charge fees based on transaction volume or transaction value. Sell more, and your software cost stays where it is.

Our approach to POS software pricing is transparent and easy to follow. We’ve always taken this approach.

Why Tower prices this way

With a fixed price, retailers know exactly what the software costs. Tower is also not taxing retailers for the growth they achieve.

There has been a commercial benefit as well. Not charging for extra terminals has kept Tower price competitive. That helps local small business retailers get more financial value from the software.

We benefit from this approach too. It brings more retailers to our community – all small business retailers, independent retailers. Having a large community of locally owned businesses using our software means the costs of us doing business are spread – this is a way we can offer the pricing we do offer.

If you are comparing POS software, ask two questions of companies offering software that serves your business needs.

  1. What does an extra terminal cost?
  2. Do the fees go up as your sales grow?

The right software at the right price is a big win for any business.

Too often we see retailers who have gone for software solely based on price only to find that the price they thought it was in not the price they are paying. This is why we also p[itch transparency. Top your homework, make sure you understand the price of the POS software you are considering.

We make our pricing accessible to anyone as a demonstration of our approach to transparent accountability.

Retail Theft Is Often Costing Local Retailers More Than They Think

R

Most small business retailers underestimate how much theft is costing them. Not because they are naive, but because the losses rarely announce themselves. Stock shrinkage accumulates quietly. Cash discrepancies get explained away. Time theft goes untracked entirely. By the time the problem becomes visible, it has usually been running for months.

Another factor is a readiness to look away rather than confronting an uncomfortable truth.

Retail theft is a consistent financial drain on independent small businesses in Australia. The businesses most at risk are often those that feel too small or too close-knit for it to happen to them.

It Is Not Always a Stranger

Customer theft gets the most attention. Security cameras, product locks, and store layouts are all designed with the external threat in mind. But employee theft is statistically just as significant, and far harder to detect without the right tools. It does not always look like cash taken from the register. It can be stock walked out the back door, discounts applied to personal purchases, refunds processed against non-existent returns, or hours logged that were never worked.

None of these show up on a security camera. They show up in your data — if you know where to look.

Here at Tower Systems we shine a light on retail theft to help local retailers lose less in theft.

Our retail experience helps us serve retailers in this space.

Your POS System Already Has the Answers

A well-configured point of sale system captures every transaction, every discount, every void, every refund, and every login. That data tells a story. Unusual patterns in any of those categories — a staff member who voids more sales than their colleagues, a till that reconciles short on the same shift rotation, a product category with unexplained shrinkage — are signals worth investigating.

Most retailers use their POS software to process sales. Fewer use it to protect the business. The intelligence is already there. It simply needs to be reviewed regularly, not just at the end of a financial year when the damage is done.

Policy Matters As Much As Technology

Data alone is not enough. A clear, written theft policy sets expectations before a problem occurs. Every team member should understand what constitutes theft, what the consequences are, and that the business monitors its data actively. This is not about creating a culture of suspicion. It is about creating a culture of accountability — one where the people doing the right thing feel protected, and those considering otherwise understand the risk.

Stop Waiting for the Annual Audit

An annual stocktake or financial audit is not a theft detection strategy. It is a damage assessment. By the time those numbers surface, a sustained theft problem may have cost tens of thousands of dollars. Regular review — weekly till reconciliation, monthly stock variance checks, and consistent POS reporting — turns detection from an annual event into an ongoing discipline.

The Businesses That Stay in Control

The retailers who manage theft well share a few things in common. They use their POS data actively. They have a policy in place. They do not wait for obvious signs before acting. And they understand that protecting revenue is just as important as generating it.

Tower Systems builds point of sale software for independent specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand. Our software includes the reporting and audit tools to help you stay across your business — every day, not just once a year.

Retail Data is More Valuable Than Most Small Business Retailers Think

R

Most independent retailers, small business retailers,  think of their point of sale software as a tool for processing sales and printing receipts. That view is increasingly out of date.

The way consumers discover and buy products is changing faster than most small business owners realise. AI-powered search, conversational commerce tools, and new technical standards like the Universal Commerce Protocol are reshaping how product data flows between retailers, platforms, and customers. In this environment, the quality of your retail data is a direct competitive advantage.

Start with your stock file. If your inventory data is inaccurate — wrong quantities, missing descriptions, outdated pricing — that problem does not stay contained to your stockroom. It flows through to your e-commerce platform, your AI search visibility, and ultimately the decisions you make about what to buy and what to drop. An accurate stocktake before 30 June is not just a compliance task. It is the foundation everything else depends on.

Your e-commerce presence matters more than ever. Shopify and similar platforms are actively adapting to emerging AI commerce standards. But a Shopify store only performs well when it is fed clean, structured data from a POS system that integrates properly. A patched-together connection between your in-store and online operations creates gaps — gaps where sales fall through and where your products fail to surface in the channels your customers are now using.

The Universal Commerce Protocol formalises this further. UCP is designed to create a common language between platforms, AI agents, and retailers. It sounds technical, and it is. But the practical implication for independent retailers is simple: the businesses with well-structured product data, connected systems, and accurate inventory will be discoverable. Those with messy data, siloed platforms, and outdated stock files will not.

None of this requires a large budget or a technology team. It requires a POS system built for independent retail, a genuine Shopify integration, and the discipline to keep your data clean.

Tower Systems has been building point of sale software for independent Australian retailers for over 40 years. The tools are there. The question is whether your data is ready to do the work you need it to do.

Why we are focused on stocktake in June — and what it means for your business

W

June 1 marks the start of our stocktake mission.

For the next 30 days, we are focused on helping local independent retailers get their stock data accurate and up to date. Not because stocktake is glamorous work — it is not — but because what comes after it matters enormously.

The AI opportunity is real, but it has a condition

Tower Systems POS software now surfaces AI-powered insights to help retailers make better decisions. Which lines to reorder. Where margin is leaking. What dead stock is quietly draining cash. Which categories are growing and which are fading.

These insights are genuinely useful. We see retailers using them to make smarter buying decisions, manage cash more carefully, and evolve their product mix with confidence.

But they depend entirely on one thing: accurate stock on hand data.

Feed the software clean data and it works hard for you. Feed it inaccurate data and the insights are unreliable — and unreliable insights can lead to poor decisions that cost real money.

June is the right moment

With EOFY on June 30, this month already prompts retailers to look closely at their numbers. We want to make the most of that momentum.

A stocktake done well in June delivers three things at once. Clean data for your end of year reporting. A clear picture of what to carry into the new financial year. And a foundation from which your software — and its AI tools — can actually do their job.

You do not have to count everything at once. Tower Systems makes it easy to count in sections — a category today, a supplier range tomorrow. Little and often is enough. By June 30 the data can be in good shape.

What we are doing to help

Throughout June we will be sharing practical guidance direct with our customers via email, in our private forum and in human contact on how to get the most from stocktake in Tower Systems — tips, reminders, and real examples from retailers who have done this and seen the difference it makes.

We are also here if you need support. Our team — based across Australia and New Zealand — is ready to help you through the process.

The retailers making the best use of their software are almost always the ones with accurate data. That is not a coincidence. It is cause and effect.

June 1 is the right day to start.

Sunday reflection: the weight that retail business owners carry

S

Some conversations stay with us.

Over the decades working with local independent retailers, our team has had tens of thousands of them. Most are about software, stock, or business strategy. But some are about something harder to name, a weight that builds up when you are running a business on your own, making every decision, carrying every risk, showing up every day regardless of how you feel.

From time to time we take calls from retailers who are struggling. Really struggling. The conversation might start with a business frustration, staff, suppliers, the shifting nature of the industry — but it moves somewhere deeper. The distress is real and it is significant.

We are not counsellors. We listen. That is usually the right thing to do.

But these calls stay with us. Because we do not think the retailers who make them are alone.

Running an independent retail business in 2026 is genuinely demanding. The industry is changing. Costs are rising. Customers are shifting. The decisions never stop. For many owners, the business is not just a livelihood,  it is an identity, a community anchor, a life’s work. When it feels threatened, the response is not always just commercial stress. Sometimes it is something more personal and more serious.

If that sounds familiar — if you are finding things hard right now, beyond the usual business pressure — please talk to someone. Your GP is a good starting point. Beyond Blue (beyondblue.org.au) has specific support for small business owners experiencing anxiety or depression. The Black Dog Institute (blackdoginstitute.org.au) is another strong resource. If things feel urgent, Lifeline is available around the clock on 13 11 14.

And if you are reading this and thinking of someone else — a fellow retailer, a supplier contact, someone in your network who seems not quite themselves — trust that instinct. You do not need to fix anything. A call that says “I noticed, and I wanted to check in” can matter more than you know.

We work with local independent retailers because we believe in what they do and who they are. That does not stop at the software.

We listen, and help where we can.

Laugh about stocktakes

L

As we’re heading into June, the most stocktaker tend to get done, take a moment for a laugh:

“I did a stocktake last week. Turns out I have more excuses than stock.”

“Stocktake time. The one day of the year you find out exactly how many of those have been sitting there since 2019.”

“We did the stocktake. The good news is we know exactly what we have. The bad news is we know exactly what we have.”

“Stocktake is just retail therapy in reverse. Instead of buying things you don’t need, you count things you forgot you had.”

“Asked the team to help with stocktake. Suddenly everyone had a appointment.”

Yes, they are lame, but they are the jokes we have.

Stocktaking is valuable work, serious work. get it right, and you profit. Ignore it, and you for sure lose money.

Beyond the jokes, focus on thew rock and profit!

Here at Tower Systems we can help.

The joke we like is:

We did the stocktake. The good news is we know exactly what we have. The bad news is we know exactly what we have.

Every retailer has been there. The stocktake does not lie — and that is exactly the point. Start with your highest-value categories, or the ranges you are least sure about. Count them, update Tower Systems, and run a dead stock report. What comes back might surprise you. One retailer found $20,000 worth of stock they had forgotten about. Clean data changes what you can see — and what you can act on.

June is the month. Start today. towersystems.com.au

Lost in the Weeds of Business Data? How AI Insights Bring Instant Clarity to Your Reports

L

You’re not short on data as an independent retailer. Your POS system tracks every transaction, every stock movement, every margin shift. The problem isn’t the numbers — it’s finding time to work out what they mean. That’;s certainly our experience in serving thousands of retailers over the years.

Business performance reports can be dense. Wading through pages of figures, charts, and spreadsheets takes time most retailers don’t have. There’s a shop floor to manage, staff to handle, customers to serve.

Tower Systems has built AI Insights into just about every business performance report in our POS software.

One Click, Three Outputs

Run a report and click one button. The built-in AI analyses the data and returns:

  • A plain-English summary of what the report is telling you right now.
  • Flagged opportunities — underperforming categories, margin gaps, stock bottlenecks you might have missed.
  • Specific next steps based on those numbers.

No cross-referencing columns. No spending an evening trying to spot a trend.

Built for Retailers, Not Data Scientists

You don’t need an accounting background to make good decisions. AI Insights gives you a clear read on your business performance in seconds — the kind of clarity that usually takes an experienced analyst hours to produce.

It works across your whole business. Sales by department, supplier performance, stock turn, margins by category — the AI reads each report in context and responds to what’s actually in front of it. That means the summary you get from a slow-moving stock report looks nothing like the one from a margin analysis. Each output is specific to that data, not a generic wrap-up.

Less time on reports. More time on the shop floor.

We understand.

We do. We have years of personal retail experience embedded in our POS software for tools for local small business retailers. We have ensured that the tools here, the AI tools especially, are genuinely useful for local retailers, that they deliver the time saving benefits we pitch. We do this because it’s what we want in retail businesses we’d run.

This personal experience helps us deliver software that is practically beneficial. It’s not just about the tech, it’s about the win for local small business retail.

Choosing POS Software? Why Relying on a Single Review Site Can Mislead Your Business

C

The stakes are high when an independent retailer chooses POS software. Get it right and your operations run smoothly. Get it wrong and you’re dealing with administrative headaches for months.

Most retailers start with online reviews — fair enough. But if Trustpilot is your only stop, you may be getting a distorted picture.

The Paid-Tier Problem

Trustpilot runs on a freemium model. Software companies can pay for tools that tilt the playing field.

They can’t buy positive reviews or delete negative ones outright. But paying subscribers get automated systems that invite recent buyers to review — constantly. That steady drip of fresh 5-star ratings buries older complaints before most people notice them. Businesses can also flag negative reviews as unverified, pulling them offline while an “investigation” runs its course.

If a software company has thousands of glowing reviews but almost no detailed commentary, that’s a managed profile. Not an honest record.

Where to Look Instead

Google Reviews are harder to game. They’re tied to local business listings, not corporate accounts. Check how a software company responds to its negative Google reviews. Do they fix the problem? Ignore it? The response from a software company is more revealing than any star rating.

Reddit is worth your time. It’s one of the few places where tech marketing has little grip. Search for subreddits covering small business, retail, or your specific niche — newsagencies, gift shops, toy stores. Retailers post raw feedback about software crashes, hidden fees, and how long it actually takes to get someone on the phone.

Private Facebook groups and industry forums are useful too. Ask directly. Most retailers are happy to share what works and what doesn’t.

Read the Reviews Differently

Don’t focus on the top-line score. Filter for 2, 3, and 4-star reviews — that’s usually where the useful detail sits.

Look at support complaints across multiple platforms. Bugs happen with any software. What matters is whether the company fixes them. Repeated complaints about slow or unhelpful support, appearing independently across different sites, is a pattern worth taking seriously.

Prioritise reviews from long-term users. Someone who installed the software last Tuesday has nothing useful to tell you. Someone who has run their business on it for two years does.

Your POS Software Should Be Cutting Your Wage Bill — Not Adding to It

Y

Rising operational costs are squeezing independent retailers. When costs climb, margins shrink. Telling staff to work faster does not solve it. The only real lever is eliminating the low-value admin work that quietly inflates your wage bill.

The tech industry response has been a lot of talk. Grand visions, broad promises, and not much that actually helps a retailer trying to get through the week.

Tower Systems built AI into the POS software itself. Not as a feature to announce — as tools designed around the specific workflows that burn staff time.

From the inventory screen:

  • New stock gets unique, SEO-friendly product descriptions in seconds.
  • Inventory data converts directly into social media posts and promotions.
  • Supplier onboarding runs with significantly less manual data entry.

The return is straightforward. Staff time spent on admin is time not spent on the shop floor — not serving customers, not merchandising, not driving sales.

Independent retailers do not have the luxury of bloated back-office teams. Every person on the roster needs to be where the money is made. When your software handles the repetitive work, your team can focus on the floor. That shift does not require a technology strategy or a consultant. It just requires software that was actually built for retail.

This is where most POS software falls short. The AI announcements are there. The practical tools built into daily workflows often are not.

Tower Systems is different. The tools are in the software you already use, on the screens your staff work from every day. No separate platform. No extra subscription. No learning curve that kills adoption before it starts.

Visit towersystems.com.au or our AI page online to see how it works in practice.

We believe that actions do speak louder than words. We spend far more building AI tools small business retailers can rely on than we spend talking about them. From what we delivered more than three years ago through to the latest update out this week, the AI tools embedded in our POS software are genuinely useful too local small business retailers. They save time, cut costs and help them see a path forward that is profitable and smart.

By helping our retailers live within the POS software for AI use helps enhance the benefits, and it certainly reduces the labour costs.
