Helping your shop build healthier cashflow, step by step

H

Cashflow is tight for many small business retailers. Some days it feels like sliding down a hill, with bills arriving faster than the takings.

There is rarely a single fix. Healthier cashflow tends to come from steady work on the basics, done well and done often.

That is where we focus Tower Systems POS software: on the reliable steps that lead to success in retail.

The first is a deeper shopper basket. When each customer buys a little more, takings grow without needing more people through the door. Knowing which products sell together, and placing them well, helps.

Margin is another. Every sale is worth more when your pricing reflects your costs, and software that makes margin visible helps you see where it is leaking away.

Buying is a big one. Overbuying ties up cash in stock that sits on the shelf, while underbuying means missed sales. Buying from your actual sales history gets you much closer to the right quantity.

Then there is theft. Stock that disappears is cash that disappears, and tools that help you spot unusual patterns give you a chance to do something about it.

None of these steps is dramatic on its own, and none needs to be. Cashflow improves through dozens of small, sensible decisions made every week. Our software is designed to make those decisions easier and better informed.

We make POS software only for local small retail businesses. That focus shapes the reports we build and the way we think about stock and pricing.

It also means the software suits the way local shops actually trade, with small teams, limited time and owners who look after a bit of everything, from buying to rostering to serving at the counter.

Every day, the software helps the retailers we serve build healthier cashflow, one sound decision after another.

If cashflow is a constant worry, start small. Pick your slowest moving stock or your lowest margin department, make one change and watch what happens over a month. Then move on to the next thing.

If you would like to see how our software could support those steps in your shop, get in touch.

Advice for retailers: The numbers that warn you before the bank balance does

A

By the time the bank balance looks wrong, the trouble started weeks back. Money in the account is a lagging number. It tells you what already happened, not what’s about to. Run a shop on the bank balance alone and you’re forever finding out too late to do much.

The early warnings live in the trade, not the account. They turn up small, and they turn up first, if you know where to look.

We have been asked for help by many small business retailers where this is the case. We’;re not accountants or business consultants but day to day we do get into discussions with retailers and we help where we can, drawing on our experience in retail from years back and the support we offer today with our POS software.

One is basket size easing off. People still coming in, still buying, just spending a bit less each time. The day’s total holds for a while because the traffic covers it, right up until it doesn’t. Spot the slip while it’s small and you’ve got room to move.

Another creeps in through how often people come back. A regular who was in twice a week is now in once. Weekly becomes fortnightly. No single customer tells you anything, and that’s the trap, because the ones drifting off are the ones you stop noticing. Put them all together and it’s a trend you needed to see a month ago.

Then a category goes quiet while the busy parts of the shop cover for it. The overall figure looks fine. Underneath, something you lean on is fading, and you won’t feel it in the takings until it’s well down the track.

The catch is that finding any of this means running reports, lining up one period against another, and knowing what you’re hunting for in the first place. Most retailers haven’t got the time. Plenty were never shown how. So the warnings just sit in the data until they finally show up as a number too big to miss.

That’s the gap the Insights Dashboard closes.

It’s a business intelligence dashboard, free to every Tower Systems customer. It uses smart AI tools and a good deal of built-in retail know-how to watch your trade as it happens and tell you what’s worth knowing, the good and the bad. You don’t run a report. You don’t go digging. The insights are curated as the day goes on, kept fresh, and sitting there when you look.

So the slipping basket, the lengthening gaps between visits, the category drifting off the boil, it all surfaces on its own, while there’s still time to act. You get to spend your attention on the decision instead of the digging.

For a small shop that’s what business intelligence ought to be. Not one more report to find an hour for. Something keeping watch on the trade and tapping you on the shoulder while the warning is still early enough to use.

The retailers who get ahead aren’t drowning in data. They just catch the right thing at the right time. The Insights Dashboard puts that in reach of any retailer, free, and built into the software you’re already running.

The Lincraft story and what small business retailers can learn

T

The Lincraft closure made news last week. Eighty years, every store, gone. It’s the kind of story that sits with you if you’ve been in retail long enough to remember when chains like that felt permanent.

We know it hit small business retailers because of conversations we have had since the news broke.

It’s not the whole retail story, though.

The independent retailer who had their best April in three years won’t make the news. Neither will the gift shop owner who spotted a new category gaining ground and moved on it before the season. These things are happening. We see them in the data.

The difference between retailers finding growth and those feeling stuck usually isn’t location or foot traffic or product range. It’s whether they’re looking at their data. Good data, understood and acted on, is the foundation underneath every independent retail success story we see.

Your POS data knows things you don’t. It knows which supplier is quietly underperforming while a newer one gains ground. Which category is lifting your average sale value. Which days your margin is strongest. What your best customers are buying that your average customers aren’t.

The Tower AI tools are built to surface exactly that — the things not sitting in front of you. Not the obvious wins you already know about. The patterns buried in twelve months of transaction data that you won’t catch on a busy Tuesday. A product that’s been growing 15% month on month and still hasn’t made your reorder list. A margin opportunity in a category you’ve been pricing conservatively out of habit rather than intention.

A chain waits for a report from head office. You can act on your data this week, before the next order goes in. That gap is real and it matters.

The pressures Lincraft cited are real too. Changing consumer behaviour, rising costs, overseas competition — none of that is going away. But the response isn’t to carry the weight of the industry headlines. It’s to look inside your own business and find what’s working.

Green shoots don’t announce themselves. They show up as a slow climb in basket size, a category quietly outperforming its shelf space, a customer type coming back more often than they used to. Your data has already found them.

If you haven’t spent time in the Tower reporting and AI insights tools recently, start there. Not with a big strategic review. Just one question: what’s growing in my business right now that I haven’t noticed yet?

The answer is probably already there.
