Advice For Retailers On How To Assess The Point Of Sale Offer That Knocked On Your Door

A

You have probably had the visit, or you will. An overseas point of sale (POS) company, a friendly pitch, free hardware, payments included, one bill and one contact. When you are already working six days a week, simple sounds wonderful. The offer deserves a fair hearing. It also deserves half an hour with a calculator before you sign anything.

It usually sounds too good to be true, all the free stuff and how easy it is.

Things like this are rarely what they seem.

Ask about the payments arrangement first. Bundled offers usually tie you to one payments provider. That removes your ability to shop around or renegotiate later, and EFTPOS rates are where independents most often find real savings. Ask directly whether you can bring your own provider. If the answer is no, that is a cost, even though it will not appear on the quote.

Then ask about the percentage. A clip of every transaction looks trivial on a quiet Tuesday. Run it across your annual turnover and look at the number. Then run it across the turnover you are hoping for in three years. You are being asked to pay more as you succeed, which is worth thinking about carefully.

Now the part most owners skip. List the five things your business does that a general retailer does not. Repairs and valuations if you are a jeweller. Care information and seasonal stock if you are a garden centre. A workshop running alongside the floor if you sell bikes. Selling by weight, by the cube and off the back of a truck if you are in produce. Take that list to the demonstration and make them show you each one working. Not described. Working.

A retailer who recently ran that comparison function by function and cost by cost found Tower Systems came out cheaper on total cost, and better suited to how their business actually traded. We can show you the numbers and let you see for yourself in your specific business.

Understanding total cost of ownership of POS software is important if not wasting money is important top you.

Your specialisation is why customers choose you rather than a chain. Software that cannot see it will slowly push you toward competing on price, and that is the one contest you cannot win. Make the visiting salesperson prove otherwise before you commit.

Tower Systems writes software for specialty retailers across a wide range of trades, and is happy to be measured against any comparison you care to run. Enquiries are welcome at sales@towersystems.com.au.

Transparent POS software pricing: choose the right level for your store

T

Shopping for POS software can all too often mean hidden fees, vague quotes and pricing you can’t get without a sales call. The question we’re asked often is the simplest: how much does it cost? We’re happy to answer.

Our pricing is published at towersystems.com.au/pricing. No sales call required. We don;t need to know who you are.

Our pricing is the same for everyone. This matters because it builds trust.

We offer four tiers: Startup, Standard, Advanced and Ultimate. A new pop-up shop has different needs and cash flow than a multi-lane, high-volume store, so you choose the level that fits.

Every tier, including Startup, includes:

  • No transaction fees. We never take a cut of your sales.
  • Unlimited products, unlimited customer records, unlimited turnover.
  • Full point of sale: fractional and decimal quantities, catalogues and promotions, laybys, gift cards and store credit vouchers.
  • Customer accounts: invoicing, delivery dockets, picking slips, loyalty tools, key-event tracking, purchase reminders and credit limits.
  • Integrations: Xero, EFTPOS, and rostering with Deputy and Tanda, plus customer statements and reporting dashboards.
  • Stock control: stocktaking, returns processing, reorder automation and customer special orders.

Higher tiers add specialist modules without a new installation. Advanced unlocks kitting, for businesses that bundle stock items into sellable packages or gift sets. Ultimate unlocks dispatch management, for high-volume shipping and delivery operations. AI retail tools are also available as you move up the tiers.

Why publish pricing when most of the industry hides it? Because hidden pricing wastes everyone’s time, yours most of all. If our software isn’t in your budget, you deserve to know that in two minutes on a web page, not after three phone calls and a demo you sat through out of politeness.

Watch for per-transaction pricing elsewhere in the market. A small percentage of every sale looks harmless until you multiply it across a year of turnover. Flat subscription pricing means your software cost doesn’t grow just because you had a good month. Your good months are yours.

The tiers also protect you from paying for capability you don’t use. A pop-up shop doesn’t need dispatch management, so it shouldn’t fund it. When the business grows, the upgrade is a subscription change, not a migration.

Have a look at the pricing page, compare the tiers side by side, and talk to us when you’re ready. Not before.
