POS Software for Game Shops: Helping Local Game Retailers Make the Most of 2026

P

Games are having a moment. In 2026, game sales are strong across Australia and New Zealand, and local game shops are growing as a result. We have seen this in the latest Circa data prepared for the ATA.

More people are looking for screen-free time with friends and family. Game nights, clubs and tournaments are bringing new players into shops every week. For independent game retailers, it’s a real opportunity.

Making the most of that growth takes more than good stock. You need to know what’s selling, look after your regulars and give new players a reason to come back.

Generic POS software isn’t built for that. Tower Systems software for game shops is. Here’s how it can help your shop grow, starting with the parts of the business that matter most.

Age restricted products

Some games carry age ratings, and some products can’t be sold to younger customers. Getting this wrong is a risk for your business.

Our software lets you flag age restricted products. When one is scanned, staff are prompted to check the customer’s age before the sale goes through. It takes the guesswork out of busy periods and helps protect you and your team.

Special orders for customers

Game shoppers often know exactly what they want, even when you don’t have it in stock. A new expansion. A hard to find title. A pre-order for a release next month.

You can record special orders against the customer, track them through to delivery and let the customer know when their order arrives. Nothing gets lost on a sticky note, and the customer leaves knowing you’ll follow through.

Games bundles

Bundles are a great way to lift the average sale. A base game with an expansion. A starter set with extra dice and sleeves. A gift pack for Christmas.

You can create bundles in your POS, price them to suit and track how they sell. Stock is managed for each item in the bundle, so your inventory stays accurate.

Sales by genre and manufacturer

Knowing what sells is the key to buying well, especially when the category is growing. Our reporting lets you look at game sales by genre and by manufacturer.

Are strategy games growing while party games slow down? Is one publisher earning far more than its share of shelf space? With clear data, you can buy with confidence, adjust your range and have better conversations with your suppliers.

Supporting games clubs

For many game shops, clubs and game nights are the heart of the business. They bring people in the door regularly and build loyalty that online stores can’t match.

You can record club members in your POS, track their visits and purchases, and offer member pricing or rewards. That helps you see the value your club brings and give members a reason to keep coming back, and to buy while they’re there.

Loyalty for infrequent shoppers

Not every customer is a regular. Some visit a few times a year, often for a gift or a new release. With so many new players discovering games, this group is growing.

Our loyalty tools let you reward these shoppers in ways that suit them, not just your most frequent customers. Points, vouchers and targeted offers can bring an occasional shopper back sooner. That’s good for them, and good for your business.

Built for game shops, supported by people

Game shops are growing, and the right tools can help yours grow faster. Tower Systems is a vertical market software company. We build software for specific retail channels, and we work only with independent retailers in Australia and New Zealand.

Our training is personal and tailored to your shop. Our help desk starts with a conversation. When you need help, you can talk to a person who understands how game shops work.

Personal Service Matters in Retail. It Should Matter in Your Software Company Too.

P

Good retailers know the value of personal service. They live it, deliver it, every day.

A customer walks in looking for a gift. You ask a few questions. Who’s it for? What do they like? What’s the budget? You show them a couple of options, they think it over, and you go back and forth until they find the right thing. That conversation is often the reason they come back.

Running a retail business is personal in the same way. Every shop is different. The owner, the staff, the location, the shoppers and the product mix all shape how the business works. Plenty of retailers and retail staff understand this.

At Tower Systems, we understand it too.

Training is personal

Our training is delivered by people, not videos you’re left to work through on your own. It’s tailored to your business and the way you trade.

A newsagent with a busy card department needs different help to a garden centre preparing for spring. A new owner taking over a shop needs different help to a long-time customer adding a new category. We start by understanding what you need, then train to that.

Our help desk is personal

When you contact our help desk, you can talk to a person. It starts with a conversation. We listen, ask questions and work through the problem with you until it’s sorted.

We’re a vertical market software company. We build POS software for specific retail channels and work only with independent retailers in Australia and New Zealand. That means the people helping you understand how shops like yours actually work.

Compare us on service, not just software

If you’re considering a change of POS software, compare our personal approach with any other software company on your list.

The tech stack is one thing to compare. Features matter, and we’re proud of ours. But software is useless without the level of service you need to get value from it. The best system in the world won’t help if you can’t get someone on the phone when your shop is busy and something isn’t working.

Ask each company you’re considering a few simple questions. Can I talk to a person when I need help? Will my training suit my business? Do your staff understand my type of shop?

We’re happy to be judged on our answers.

Too Much in “General”? How a Cleaner Department Structure Makes Small Business POS Data Work Harder

T

Open your Tower Systems Retailer POS and look at your departments and categories. If you see duplicates, vague names, or a “General” or “Miscellaneous” category holding hundreds of products, you’re not alone.

It happens in almost every business over time. A new supplier arrives and someone creates a category in a hurry. A staff member adds a department that already exists under another name. Products that don’t obviously fit anywhere end up in a catch-all.

None of it seems like a big problem on the day. But after a few years, your data becomes hard to trust and harder to use.

Why it matters

Your department and category structure is the backbone of your reporting. When it’s messy, the reports are messy too.

You can’t see which categories are growing if half the products sit in “General”. You can’t compare gross profit across departments if the same products are split between two of them. And staff waste time hunting for the right place to put a new item.

Clean data makes your business easier to manage. It helps you make better decisions about stock, space and buying, because the numbers reflect how your shop actually trades.

How our service works

Our Department and Category Restructure service is a careful, practical clean-up, tailored to each business. This is a small business focussed service that’s helping retailers achieve a clean dataset.

We start with an AI assisted review of your full product database. From that, we create a proposed department and category structure that suits the way you sell.

We then send you a spreadsheet showing the proposed structure. You review it and either approve it as supplied or tell us what you’d like changed. Nothing is updated in your POS until you’re happy.

Once approved, we rebuild the structure in your Tower Systems Retailer POS. Duplicates are merged. Vague categories are replaced with meaningful ones. Every product ends up in the right place.

What to know before you start

Two things sit outside the service.

If you use an accounting link, you may need to update its setup after the restructure. We’ll guide you through this, but the accounting changes themselves need to be made by you or your accountant.

If you have a website, menu links that point to departments or categories may need updating. We’ll help you identify what needs to change. If you’d like us to make the website menu changes for you, we can quote on that separately.

The result

You end up with clean departments, clear categories and a logical product hierarchy. Your staff find things faster. Your reports make sense. And you have a dataset you can actually use to manage your business.

The Department and Category Restructure is currently $499, down from $999.

Running your shop when you’re not in it

R

Most independent retailers want to be on the shop floor. Life doesn’t always allow it. A holiday, a sick day, a trip to see family, a second job. There are plenty of reasons you can be away from the shop.

Here’s something we hear often from customers. Time away is when they see the business most clearly. Standing behind the counter, you see the next customer and the next delivery. Step back, and you see the patterns.

Remote management is normal in small business retail

Managing remotely is common in our part of retail. Some owners hold down a job elsewhere while the shop builds. Others own two, three or more shops and can only be in one place at a time.

How you manage remotely is your call. So is whether you group several shops together for a single view of the numbers. Some owners want everything combined. Others prefer to keep each shop separate.

We’ve built Tower Systems to be as flexible as possible here. The setup you start with can change as your needs change. Add a shop, step back from the counter, or bring in a manager, and the software adapts with you.

Our software also runs in-store or in the cloud. You choose what suits the way you work.

The numbers come to you

You don’t need to be in the shop to know how the day went. Business intelligence reports and management functions are available wherever you log in.

Some of it happens without you lifting a finger. When a staff member closes the register and runs the end-of-shift procedure, the day’s sales and key figures are emailed to you straight away.

If the cash or EFTPOS balance is out, you know that evening. Not at the end of the month, when it’s harder to track down.

Alerts when something doesn’t look right

The software also watches for unusual activity in-store. If a staff member discounts a big-ticket item too heavily, or cancels more sales than usual, you get to find out without having to jump through hoops.

You can log in, look at the transaction and deal with it quickly. Small problems are much easier to fix before they become habits.

Admin on your own time

Remote access also means you can fit software work around your day.

If you’re on the counter most of the week, or short a staff member, stock maintenance and other admin can wait until you’re off the floor. Electronic invoices that suppliers send overnight can be processed over breakfast at home.

That leaves shop time for the work that grows sales: displays, customers and your team.

One approach for every kind of specialist shop

We see owners of bookshops, gift shops, garden centres, bike shops, jewellers and rural supply stores manage this way. The approach is the same across all of them. You can step away from the floor and still know what’s happening.

Built for every kind of specialist retailer

Bookshop, gift shop, farm supply business, bike shop, garden centre or jewellery store, the approach is the same. You can step away from the floor and still know exactly what is happening while you are not there.

Talk to us

If you’d like to see how remote management would work for your shop, or across several shops, talk to us. We’ll show you the options and help you choose the setup that suits you now, knowing it can change later.

Software Is Only Part of the Story: How Tower Systems Helps Retailers Get More From It

S

Buying point of sale software is the easy part. Getting real value from it every day is where the work starts.

Retailers ask practical questions once the software is installed. Who do I call when I am stuck? Can a new casual learn it on their first shift? What can it do beyond ringing up a sale? Does anyone listen when I suggest an improvement?

Tower Systems answers yes to each of these. The company has served independent specialty retailers in Australia and New Zealand for more than 40 years. Its approach rests on one idea: software works best when real people stand behind it.

Yes, you can talk to a human

At Tower Systems, a question gets a person. Support is delivered by a local team that understands specialty retail. The same is true in sales and in leadership. Customers can reach the people who make decisions about the business.

This matters on a busy Saturday when something needs sorting fast. It also matters for the bigger questions, like how to set up a new department or report on a slow category.

Retail is personal.

For quick answers at any hour, Tower Systems also offers an AI help desk. It launched more than three years ago and answers in plain language. Customers say it saves them time. It sits alongside the human team, not in place of it.

New staff can get up to speed quickly

Staff turnover is a fact of life in retail. Every new team member needs to serve customers confidently, and soon.

Tower Systems builds software for specific retail channels, not for every business type. That focus keeps screens and workflows relevant to the shop floor. New staff learn the tasks they actually need, without wading through features meant for someone else.

When a question comes up mid-shift, help is close at hand. Staff can ask the AI help desk in plain English or call the support team.

More than a cash register

A cash register records a sale. Good retail software helps run the business. Tower Systems customers use the software in three broad ways.

  • Saving time. Automating routine tasks such as receiving stock, reordering and end-of-day processes frees hours for serving customers.
  • Making more money. Sales and stock reports show what is working and what is not. Retailers can back winning lines, clear slow stock and use loyalty tools to bring shoppers back.
  • Managing better. Clear numbers on margin, stock holding and staff activity support better decisions.

The AI tools in the software have found keen supporters among Tower’s most experienced retailers. Customers in their 60s, 70s and 80s report time savings of up to 8 hours a week.

Tower Systems also keeps costs predictable. It does not charge fees based on a retailer’s sales. It is payments provider agnostic, so retailers choose their own payment provider and control that pricing.

Your suggestions shape the software

Retailers know their shops best. Tower Systems built its Software Ideas platform to put that knowledge to work.

Any customer can suggest an improvement. Other customers then vote on it. The process is open, so everyone can see what has been suggested and how much support it has.

Those suggestions and votes guide what Tower Systems develops next. Customers see their ideas reflected in software updates, which keeps the product grounded in how specialty retailers actually work.

A community, not just a customer list

Tower Systems serves only independent specialty retailers in Australia and New Zealand. It does not chase franchises or chains. That focus shapes everything, from the features it builds to the people who answer the phone.

The result is software backed by people who understand independent retail and want their customers to succeed.

Why our customers love the Tower Systems chatbot

W

When we added a chatbot to the Tower Systems help desk, we had one goal. Help retailers get answers faster, in plain language, whenever they need them.

The feedback from customers tells us it is working.

Answers outside business hours

Retailers don’t stop working when the help desk closes. Many of our customers do their admin early in the morning or late at night.

One general store owner told us:

“I have used the chatbot recently as I generally have questions outside of working hours… The response provided was succinct and provided me with step by step instructions.”

She used it to prepare for a change of ownership and to clean up her system ahead of a stocktake. Both times, she got clear, step-by-step instructions.

Plain language, at your own pace

Not everyone is confident with technology. The chatbot lets people learn at their own pace, without feeling rushed.

“I particularly like it because I am not particularly IT savvy and I can use it at my own pace.”

Another customer said:

“It answered everything I requested, and the instructions were very easy to follow. Saved me a lot of time and I was able to learn things by navigating through the system myself.”

Discovering more of the software

One of the best outcomes is that customers find features they did not know they had.

“I’m always hesitant using chatbot type technology… Your chatbot is amazing! It quickly analyses and answers in step-by-step detail how to fix whatever trouble I’m having… Tower’s chatbot has helped me discover and utilise more of the Retailer software and its capabilities than I knew existed.”

When a customer gets more from their software, they get more from their business.

Time back in a busy week

Retailers are time poor. Every minute spent searching for an answer is a minute away from customers.

“On the retail side of the house, most of us are time poor. So when we have an issue and we ask the bot, it saves so much time, effort and frustration.”

“I’ve asked it plenty of questions and only stumped it once. I love that it puts answers in a language we can understand.”

A human is still there

The chatbot does not replace our people. It works alongside them.

“Helps with almost all my enquiries and if it can’t help, will get a human to contact me. Saves me so much time spent searching the Tower website for answers.”

In one case, a customer wasn’t confident to go ahead with the chatbot’s instructions. A team member called her to help.

That is how it should work. The chatbot handles the quick questions. Our team is there for everything else.

Thank you

Thank you to every customer who has used the chatbot and shared feedback. Your comments help us keep improving.

If you are a Tower Systems customer and haven’t tried the chatbot yet, give it a go next time you have a question.

And remember, contacting a human is easy.

Toy sales are growing. Here is how local toy shops can win more of them.

T

Australian toy sales grew 10% in August 2026 based on professionally collected industry data and are up 12% for the year to date. Games and puzzles were the biggest dollar gainer, up 38%. Building sets rose 16% and explorative toys 55%.

Licensed toys now make up 47% of all toy dollars. Pokémon, Hot Wheels, Marvel, Star Wars and Magic: The Gathering lead the way. The average toy sold for $19.19.

This is good news for local independent toy shops. The question is how to make sure more of that growth comes through your door, not the big-box store’s or an online marketplace’s.

Local indie retailers: compete on what makes you local

You can’t outspend the big players. You can outsmart them.

Local toy shops know their families, schools and community. Tower Systems toy shop software helps you turn that knowledge into sales.

Reward shoppers at the moment of purchase. Our loyalty tools let you give a reward at the counter, as a discount or as points. Shoppers feel the benefit straight away, which gives them a reason to come back to you.

Offer member pricing to local groups. You can set exclusive pricing for members of local schools, kindergartens, community groups and clubs. It is a simple way to build relationships the big chains can’t match.

Run promotions at the register. Set up custom bundles at a set price, or run buy one, get one free offers. Bundles work well for games, puzzles and building sets, the categories growing fastest.

Help people buy more

Smart loyalty is not just about discounts. It is about giving shoppers reasons to add one more item and to come back sooner. A bundle that pairs a board game with an expansion, or a puzzle with a second puzzle, lifts the sale. A reward that lands on the day gives people a reason to return before the next birthday party.

Run the shop more efficiently

Toy deliveries are often assorted, with mixed items from many suppliers. Our software handles assorted stock, and supplier invoices can be imported automatically with built-in AI tools.

You can track high-value items by serial number for warranty claims. You can print assembly instructions, age guidance and care details on the receipt.

Our AI tools are included, not charged as an extra. They can write website product descriptions, compare prices and answer questions about your business reports in plain language.

Sell in-store and online

Tower Systems connects with Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce. Product details and images flow out to your website, and online sales flow back into the software. Xero integration is available too.

Local software for local shops

Tower Systems software is made locally and supported locally. Our help desk is open six days a week, including Saturday, with after-hours help for urgent system-down issues. Your licence covers unlimited computers in your shop.

The toy category is strong. Let’s help you make the most of it.

Who our POS software is for, and who it is not for

W

We say no to prospective customers more often than you might expect from a software company.

If your business is a franchise, a big chain, or a cafe or restaurant that happens to sell some retail on the side, we are not the right fit and we will tell you so. A bad match costs everyone, us included.

We’re not rude about this, just practical. We know what we are good at, and what we are not made for.

Our software is made for independent, owner-operated specialty retailers in Australia and New Zealand whose trading is more complicated than a generic till can handle. Maybe you run a workshop and need to track repair jobs. Maybe you sell items with serial numbers, or by weight or length, or you carry age-restricted lines, or you want to remember a customer’s anniversary so you can invite them back at the right moment.

A generic POS system scans a barcode and takes a payment. If that is all your shop needs, cheaper options exist and one of them will probably do. It is when the barcode scan is the easy part of the sale that our software makes sense.

We serve 20 specialty retail channels. Jewellers, bike shops, garden centres, newsagents, pet stores, toy shops, fishing and outdoors businesses, produce and farm supply, firearms dealers and more. Each version is built with retailers in that trade, which is where the useful detail comes from. A haberdashery can sell lace by the centimetre. A garden centre prints watering advice on the receipt, which matters in a business where a paper price tag fails the moment it rains. A jeweller tracks a repair from booking to pickup and gets a reminder out ahead of a customer’s anniversary.

Size of business matters less than people assume.

A first-year micro business starts on our Startup tier and an established multistore operator runs unlimited terminals on a higher tier. The common thread among the businesses we serve best is an owner who makes the buying decision and cares personally how the shop runs.

A few things about how we do business, since they come up in almost every sales conversation. We do not take a cut of your sales, on any tier. You choose your own EFTPOS provider. Monthly rental can be cancelled at any time. Our pricing is on our website for anyone to see, and you do not have to hand over an email address or phone number to see it. We find retailers appreciate that more than any feature.

Every call to our help desk is answered by our own people in Australia and New Zealand, and new customers get one-on-one training tailored to their shop. The features in our three major software updates a year come through our software ideas platform, where customers suggest and vote. Nobody buys their way to the top of our roadmap.

We have also been building AI into the software in-house since 2022, before anyone else in Australian specialty retail POS. Retailers use it most for importing supplier invoices from almost any PDF. It also writes product descriptions for web stores and gives plain-English answers about what the sales data is saying. These tools are on our Advanced and Ultimate tiers.

If this sounds like your business, book a demo, online or in your shop, and bring your hard questions. If we are not right for you, we will say so.

Pricing: towersystems.com.au/pricing.html. Book a demo: towersystems.com.au/pos-software-free-demo.html. Or call 1300 662 957 (AU), 0800 444 367 (NZ).

Newsagents made us the industry standard, not the other way around

N

More newsagents have chosen Tower Systems than any other POS software. We didn’t set that label ourselves. Newsagents did, one shop at a time, by choosing us over everything else on offer.

We don’t take that lightly, and we don’t think it happened by accident.

We know the shop floor because we’ve stood on it

We’re the only POS company in this space that has owned and run its own newsagencies. Our founder bought their first shop in 1996 and built our software off the back of what that business actually needed, not what looked good in a sales pitch. That’s still true of every update we ship, even though our company today does not own a newsagency.

Newsagencies aren’t standing still, and neither is the software

The traditional core of a newsagency, magazines, papers, lottery, is a smaller part of the business than it used to be, and it keeps shrinking. The newsagents doing well are the ones shifting shelf space and attention toward gifts, cards, stationery and collectables. Software built for a magazine-and-lottery counter doesn’t help with that shift. Software built by people who’ve made that shift themselves does.

That’s where features like our loyalty tools earn their keep. You can market to a customer based on what they’ve bought, which means turning a regular lottery shopper into someone who browses the gift wall, or a magazine reader into someone who tries the stationery range. That’s not a feature for its own sake. It’s the whole point of the software.

The parts that just need to work, working

A newsagency runs on integrations most other retail software doesn’t bother with. We link directly to The Lott through XchangeIT, so lottery sales are captured without manual entry. Magazine arrivals and returns run through XchangeIT too, so your stock and your credits stay accurate without someone doing it by hand. Greeting card suppliers load in as electronic invoices in seconds instead of an afternoon of data entry.

Beyond the newsagency-specific stuff, the software connects to Shopify, Magento and WooCommerce if you sell online, to Xero for your books, and to EFTPOS with every major bank. If you pass on card fees, the system calculates the surcharge for you. We don’t charge a fee per transaction, ever.

AI tools built into the day-to-day

The AI tools built into the software write product descriptions for new gift lines, help you compare prices, and turn a stack of sales data into something you can act on, which categories are growing, which need attention, without you having to dig for it.

None of this makes us the biggest software company. It makes us the one most newsagents chose. If you want to see why, we’re happy to show you.

Book a free demo, or call 1300 662 957 in Australia and 0800 444 367 in New Zealand.

Getting the most out of a call to our POS software help desk

G

Our help desk is human, and it’s local: people in Australia and New Zealand, not an offshore call centre reading from a script. That matters because retail is personal, and so is fixing it when something goes wrong.

But even a good help desk can only work as fast as the conversation allows. A lot of what determines how quickly a problem gets solved isn’t the technician, it’s how the call itself goes.

Retail interrupts everything, including the fix

Support calls usually happen while the shop is open, which means a customer at the counter, and the customer always comes first. Fair enough. But every time a call gets put down mid-troubleshooting, the technician loses the thread. Getting back to where you were takes longer than the interruption itself did. A five-minute pause can turn a ten-minute call into thirty.

Nobody’s fault. It’s just what happens when technical support runs into a trading floor.

What actually speeds things up

A few habits make a real difference to how fast a fix comes through:

  • Start with email where you can. It’s often faster than a phone call, not slower.
  • Include a screenshot and a proper description in that email. No pressure of a live call, so you can properly explain what’s happening.
  • With the details in hand, our help desk can sometimes solve it before anyone picks up the phone.
  • If you do need to call, try to call when you can give it your full attention.
  • If the shop gets busy mid-call, say so. Offering to call back later is usually faster than trying to push through.

Just tell us

If you’re short-staffed and it’s not a good time, say that. It costs nothing, it lets us manage the queue properly, and when you do call back, you get someone’s full attention instead of a rushed half-conversation.

None of this is about making things easier for us at your expense. A call that isn’t interrupted gets solved faster. That means less time away from your counter. Everybody’s better off.

That’s the kind of help desk we’re trying to run: local, human, and worth your time.

What’s one key thing retailers tend to forget when considering Point of Sale software that if they had considered it, it would make a big difference?

W

Today, let’s look at one thing too many retailers do not consider when looking at POS software and it is one thing that could make the world of difference to the value they harvest from using the POS software.

What to look for when choosing POS software

Choosing a POS software company deserves more scrutiny than most retailers give it. A polished website or a free hardware deal can look attractive upfront. Neither tells you much about what happens once you are a customer.

Customer service is where it counts

When something goes wrong mid-shift, a retailer often needs to talk through a problem before they can clearly describe what they need. That kind of back-and-forth is how the real issue gets identified. A chatbot cannot do it. An email queue rarely can either.

Some POS providers have removed phone contact entirely. For retailers who think better in a conversation, that creates friction — and it tends to show up as wasted time rather than anything that appears on a quote.

Tower Systems keeps the line open

Clients can reach Tower Systems by phone, email, or chatbot. Contact details for the leadership team go to every customer from the start, so there is a clear path for anything that needs more than a standard reply. Call us and see for yourself how easy it is to speak with someone.

Before signing, ask the basics

Is the support team local? Do they know standard retail terminology? Do they work in the same time zone? A scripted offshore call centre and a direct conversation are not the same thing, and the gap becomes obvious the first time something urgent needs fixing. Personal service matters when it comes to helping retailers since retail is personal after all.

Support is part of the cost

A POS system that is difficult to get help with ends up costing more than it looked on paper. Retail runs on relationships, and the relationship with a software provider is one a business relies on most when things are not going well.

Tower Systems has supported independent retailers across Australia for decades. Visit towersystems.com.au to find out more.

Is staying with your current POS software costing you more than a switch?

I

This question came up yesterday. We’ve demonstrated our POS software to a retailer. They love it. At the end though they thought it best to stick with what they have because it’s less hassle.

Switching POS software is stressful, for sure. It costs money. It disrupts your day. And there is the discomfort of walking away from a system you have run for years and know inside out, and maybe relationships you appreciate.

Resistance to switching POS software is normal. Most retailers who stay put do so because change feels like too much hassle.

The cost of comfort

Sticking with old software is a choice. You are choosing comfort over growth. If you are happy with how the business is performing, there is no reason to change anything. Leave it alone. But if you want the business to be worth more, the tools you use matter.

Old software tends to leave money on the table. Workflows that should take seconds take minutes. Pricing that should move with your costs sits still. The numbers you rely on to make decisions are often old, partial, or both. You end up running the shop on a hunch. There are things old software misses.

Rent is up. Wages are up. Most of your costs are up. A small retailer cannot stand still in that environment. You have to find profit just to cover the increases landing on you each year.

You need software that can help you make more money.

The quicksand in the middle

When retailers think about changing software, they get stuck on the transition. The install. The training. That first week where nothing feels familiar. The hump is real and I will not pretend otherwise.

But the hump is temporary. Look past it and good software gives you the tools to actually compete. A current system lets you change markups across a whole product range in a few clicks, so you can lift the margin on each item without scaring off customers. Do that across the shop and the gain adds up fast.

The point of upgrading is not the software. It is a business that makes more money and, honestly, is more enjoyable to run.

Three questions worth answering

Want to know if your current software is costing you? Answer these.

  1. Is it serving the business well today?
  2. Is the support there when you need it?
  3. Is it helping you make smart decisions with good data?

Three yeses and your system is doing its job. Keep it. A single no means it is worth looking at what else is out there. No drama, just research.

There is one more question: are you happy? If the answer is no, focus on what happy might feel like.

Why local matters

If you do decide to move, the friction is mostly in the changeover, and that is where a good supplier earns its keep. At Tower Systems we convert your data, train you one on one, and back it with a large library of how-to videos so you are not stuck waiting on hold.

We are Australian made and Australian supported, with our development and support folk also in New Zealand. We work with independent local retailers, not big franchises. A lot of the software in this market is run by offshore companies with a remote help desk and a queue. When something goes wrong at 9am on a Saturday, who picks up matters.

Do not let a temporary hurdle talk you out of a more profitable business.

We’d love to see if our POS software could make you happy. sales@towersystems.com.au

The Sunday Reset: How Independent Retailers Use Quiet Days to Get Ahead

T

Sundays tend to be slower in most independent retail stores. Foot traffic is lighter. The urgency that dominates a busy Saturday is largely absent.

That quieter rhythm is worth something if you use it deliberately.

The idea is simple. Before the week ends, identify one thing the business needs that has not been done. Not restocking or cleaning. Something that actually moves the business forward. Then use Sunday to get it done.

It might be reviewing last month’s sales data and spotting a slow-moving category. Rearranging a display that has not been performing. Updating product descriptions. Checking supplier invoices. Having a conversation with a staff member you have been putting off.

This is what we did back when we owned shops, and it worked a treat for our businesses.

Why the slower pace helps

When the shop is busy, your attention goes to the next customer, the next transaction, the next small problem. There is no space to step back and look at things clearly.

A quieter day changes that. You notice things you missed during the week. You think differently about what the business needs rather than what is immediately in front of you.

One task completed each Sunday adds up to more than fifty improvements across the year. Most of them small. The cumulative effect is not.

Keep a list during the week

The Sunday reset works best when you are not starting from scratch each time. Keep a running list during the week. Every time you notice something that needs attention but cannot be addressed right now, write it down.

By Sunday you have a ready-made agenda. A note in your phone, a whiteboard in the back office, a simple document — the format does not matter. The habit does.

Use the time to look at your data

One of the most useful things you can do on a quiet Sunday is spend thirty minutes with your business reports. Which products moved well this week? Is basket spend trending up or down? Are there categories underperforming that you have not had time to look at properly?

This kind of review is difficult on a busy trading day. Sunday gives you the time and the headspace to do it properly, and to act on what you find.

The Small Business Retailer Mindset That Makes the Difference

T

Some retail business owners arrive at their shop and immediately become sales associates. They serve customers, tidy shelves, process transactions. The day passes. Nothing much changes.

We see this a lot. Weekends especially. The owner is physically there but not really leading.

The retailers who get the most out of their business ask themselves something every time they walk in: what can I actually achieve today? What can I do right now to move things forward? Those questions sound simple. In practice, not everyone asks them.

These are questions we asked ourselves when we owned and ran shops.

The owner stuck in sales associate mode tends to handle what is in front of them and leave it there. That gets you through the day. It rarely grows a business.

What the owner mindset looks like in practice

It does not require a grand strategy session every morning. It is more specific than that.

An owner walking in with the right mindset notices things. The product that has been sitting in the same spot for six weeks without selling. The shelf that customers keep walking past. The basket spend that has not moved in months. The staff member who is great with customers but never suggests an add-on.

A sales associate does not need to care about any of that. An owner does.

In practical terms, it might mean spending twenty minutes on a Tuesday rearranging a display. Or pulling a sales report and actually reading it. Or asking a customer why they came in today instead of ordering online. Small actions, but they come from a different way of thinking about the day.

The businesses we see growing are usually the ones where the owner treats every visit to the shop as a chance to improve something. Not dramatically. Just incrementally. Over months and years, that compounds.

What your data can tell you

One of the underused advantages of good POS software is that it shows you what is actually happening in your business, not what you think is happening.

Which products are your best performers by margin, not just by volume? Which categories are growing and which are quietly shrinking? What does your average transaction look like on a Saturday versus a Wednesday?

Most independent retail business owners have access to this information. Fewer use it regularly. The ones who do tend to make better buying decisions, spot problems earlier, and respond faster when something is not working.

That is not a technology argument. It is a mindset argument. The data only helps if you show up as an owner and actually look at it.

After working with independent retailers across Australia for decades

We have noticed that location, foot traffic, and product range matter less than you would expect. The clearest difference between businesses that grow and those that stay flat is usually whether the owner walks in as an owner.

That sounds obvious. It is less obvious in practice, particularly when the shop is busy, staff are calling in sick, and the supplier order needs checking. The operational demands of retail are real. They pull your attention away from the business and into the business, if that distinction makes sense.

The owners who manage it tend to be deliberate about it. They block time. They set a small goal for each visit. They read their reports. They treat the shop as something they are building, not just running.

How Tower Systems helps

Tower Systems builds POS software for independent retailers across Australia, including newsagencies, gift shops, and garden centres. Our software is designed to give owners clear, accessible information about their business without requiring an accounts background to interpret it.

We also pay attention to how our customers use what we build. The retailers getting the most value are usually the ones already asking the right questions. Our job is to make sure the answers are easy to find.

If you are an independent retailer thinking about your POS setup, or you want to understand what your current data is actually telling you, we are happy to talk. Contact the Tower Systems team for a no-pressure conversation about your business.

Why clean stock data is the foundation for your best financial year yet

W

It is 9 June. Nine days into the final month of the financial year, and it is worth asking: how many independent retailers have turned their mind to a stocktake?

The old pressure was simple. A physical count by 30 June was a hard requirement. Accountants insisted on it, compliance drove it, and an entire industry of professional stocktakers moved from store to store making sure the stock-on-hand figure was right.

POS software changed that. As inventory tracking improved and ATO requirements evolved, the hard deadline softened. Businesses could track stock dynamically rather than count it once a year. Useful — but that shift brought a problem most retailers do not notice until it matters.

Data drift is quiet and cumulative

In a busy retail environment, stock-on-hand figures slip. A small error when receiving a supplier invoice. A return that does not get recorded. Theft, damage, shrinkage — none of it logged at the time. Each instance is minor. Over months, the gap between what your system says and what is actually on the shelf can be significant.

The compliance pressure around 30 June has eased. The cost of inaccurate data has not.

Why it matters more now

Automated reordering and AI-driven insights both depend on clean data. If your POS is making replenishment decisions against stock figures that have drifted, it is ordering against fiction. If you want AI tools to surface what is genuinely performing, the underlying data has to reflect reality. Predictive tools are only as useful as the information they work from.

This is why Tower Systems treats 30 June 2026 as a business capability date, not just a tax one.

A stocktake does not have to be an event

Tower Systems POS supports several approaches:

  • Rolling stocktakes — count a shelf, a category, or one supplier at a time
  • Sectional counting — break the shop into sections and work through it over several days
  • Full counts — complete the whole store in a single pass if that is preferred

No need to close the doors or run an overnight operation.

22 days to go

The 2026/27 financial year starts in 22 days. Retailers who go into it with verified stock data are better placed — for reordering, for reporting, for making decisions based on what is real rather than what the system guessed.

The Tower Systems support and training teams are available now. If your stock data needs attention, this is the month.

What Customers Say About Tower Systems Website Development

W

Getting a website built can feel daunting. For many small business retailers, it sits on the to-do list for months — sometimes years. There’s always a reason to delay: too busy, too expensive, too complicated, not sure where to start. These are words from retailers who finally took the step.

Sharon sums up what we hear most often: “We put off building our website for longer than we should have. Once we finally took the step, Christina and the Tower team made it so easy — we only wish we’d done it sooner.”

That phrase — we only wish we’d done it sooner — comes up a lot. The fear of the process tends to be worse than the process itself.

Nicole from Charlton’s Fishing went further: “I unreservedly recommend Christina. Her work is top-tier. She has gone above and beyond making our website the amazing product it is. She made our complex website seem easy, answered our questions without making me feel silly. I cannot speak highly enough of her.”

Feeling comfortable asking questions matters. A lot of business owners come to this process without technical knowledge. They shouldn’t have to pretend otherwise.

Sophie from Bluey’s Hunting & Fishing had a more involved project and described how the team handled it: “The development of the website for our business was a huge step for us, and Christina and the Tower team made this process quite straightforward despite it being such a complex one. They took the time to teach us as much as they could about the ongoing management of the website, and we have been really happy with the final product. Since our website launched, we have continued to learn a lot about how to evolve and develop the website to continue to meet our customer needs.”

That last part is worth noting. A website isn’t finished on launch day. The retailers who get the most from theirs keep learning and adapting it over time. Tower Systems builds that capability into the handover.

Rod from Bingara Newsagency offers a different perspective: “As an 81-year-old, Christina was able to set me up with great patience and skill. Nine months later, while we are not breaking records, we have a functioning online presence.” Honest and practical — which is exactly what a website should be for a local retailer starting out online.

Phil from newsXpress Silver Sands kept it brief: “Christina is very calm, patient, and professional. She needed to be with a luddite like me.”

Five different retailers, five different businesses, one consistent thread: the support made the difference.

If your website has been sitting on the list too long, talk to us. The Tower Systems team has helped retailers across Australia get online without the stress. It’s worth the conversation.

Lost in the Weeds of Business Data? How AI Insights Bring Instant Clarity to Your Reports

L

You’re not short on data as an independent retailer. Your POS system tracks every transaction, every stock movement, every margin shift. The problem isn’t the numbers — it’s finding time to work out what they mean. That’;s certainly our experience in serving thousands of retailers over the years.

Business performance reports can be dense. Wading through pages of figures, charts, and spreadsheets takes time most retailers don’t have. There’s a shop floor to manage, staff to handle, customers to serve.

Tower Systems has built AI Insights into just about every business performance report in our POS software.

One Click, Three Outputs

Run a report and click one button. The built-in AI analyses the data and returns:

  • A plain-English summary of what the report is telling you right now.
  • Flagged opportunities — underperforming categories, margin gaps, stock bottlenecks you might have missed.
  • Specific next steps based on those numbers.

No cross-referencing columns. No spending an evening trying to spot a trend.

Built for Retailers, Not Data Scientists

You don’t need an accounting background to make good decisions. AI Insights gives you a clear read on your business performance in seconds — the kind of clarity that usually takes an experienced analyst hours to produce.

It works across your whole business. Sales by department, supplier performance, stock turn, margins by category — the AI reads each report in context and responds to what’s actually in front of it. That means the summary you get from a slow-moving stock report looks nothing like the one from a margin analysis. Each output is specific to that data, not a generic wrap-up.

Less time on reports. More time on the shop floor.

We understand.

We do. We have years of personal retail experience embedded in our POS software for tools for local small business retailers. We have ensured that the tools here, the AI tools especially, are genuinely useful for local retailers, that they deliver the time saving benefits we pitch. We do this because it’s what we want in retail businesses we’d run.

This personal experience helps us deliver software that is practically beneficial. It’s not just about the tech, it’s about the win for local small business retail.

Choosing POS Software? Why Relying on a Single Review Site Can Mislead Your Business

C

The stakes are high when an independent retailer chooses POS software. Get it right and your operations run smoothly. Get it wrong and you’re dealing with administrative headaches for months.

Most retailers start with online reviews — fair enough. But if Trustpilot is your only stop, you may be getting a distorted picture.

The Paid-Tier Problem

Trustpilot runs on a freemium model. Software companies can pay for tools that tilt the playing field.

They can’t buy positive reviews or delete negative ones outright. But paying subscribers get automated systems that invite recent buyers to review — constantly. That steady drip of fresh 5-star ratings buries older complaints before most people notice them. Businesses can also flag negative reviews as unverified, pulling them offline while an “investigation” runs its course.

If a software company has thousands of glowing reviews but almost no detailed commentary, that’s a managed profile. Not an honest record.

Where to Look Instead

Google Reviews are harder to game. They’re tied to local business listings, not corporate accounts. Check how a software company responds to its negative Google reviews. Do they fix the problem? Ignore it? The response from a software company is more revealing than any star rating.

Reddit is worth your time. It’s one of the few places where tech marketing has little grip. Search for subreddits covering small business, retail, or your specific niche — newsagencies, gift shops, toy stores. Retailers post raw feedback about software crashes, hidden fees, and how long it actually takes to get someone on the phone.

Private Facebook groups and industry forums are useful too. Ask directly. Most retailers are happy to share what works and what doesn’t.

Read the Reviews Differently

Don’t focus on the top-line score. Filter for 2, 3, and 4-star reviews — that’s usually where the useful detail sits.

Look at support complaints across multiple platforms. Bugs happen with any software. What matters is whether the company fixes them. Repeated complaints about slow or unhelpful support, appearing independently across different sites, is a pattern worth taking seriously.

Prioritise reviews from long-term users. Someone who installed the software last Tuesday has nothing useful to tell you. Someone who has run their business on it for two years does.
