Why gift shops outgrow Square and Shopify POS

W

Square and Shopify POS are fine tools. They’re built for everyone, which means they’re built for no one in particular. That matters more in a gift shop than in most retail businesses.

A gift shop is not a cafe. It’s not a clothing store either.

You carry many items, sometimes thousands of items, often only one or two of each.

You buy from dozens of suppliers, some of them small and quirky. Your trade swings hard with the seasons: Mother’s Day, Christmas, Valentine’s Day. A generic point of sale system doesn’t understand any of that, because it wasn’t built for it.

Here’s where software made for gift shops earns its keep.

Supplier invoices load electronically. When a delivery arrives with 200 new lines, you don’t type them in. The invoice imports, items are created or updated, and you’re back on the shop floor. Retailers tell us this saves hours every week.

Loyalty built for occasional shoppers. Points programs suit businesses people visit daily – that’s their function, to get people in more often, which is easier in a cafe or supermarket. Gift shop customers might visit a few times a year. Our loyalty prints a dollar voucher on the receipt, something shoppers can see and spend. Retailers using it report customers returning sooner and spending more per visit. Now, if you want a points based system, it’s there, included.

LayBy done properly. Not a workaround, not a plug-in. LayBy is part of how plenty of people shop for gifts, and the software handles it natively, including payments, reminders and reporting.

Reordering based on evidence. The software shows what’s selling, by item, category and supplier, so you reorder winners and quit losers. In a shop where margin is made through buying decisions, this is gold.

Reporting that shows where you make money. Which suppliers perform. Which categories carry the shop. Which don’t. You can’t get that from a system that treats every retail business the same.

Developed locally. Your type of retail is local. Software developed locally is more likely to serve that local focus you have.

There’s one more difference worth naming. Square makes its money clipping the ticket on every sale you make. We’re a software company. We’ve served local Australian retailers since 1981, and when you call for help, a real person answers, here in Australia.

If your software was made for everyone, it wasn’t made for you. That’s the case for POS software made specifically for gift shops.

Free, ongoing training: getting more from your POS software

F

It is 12 June, and this afternoon at 2:00 PM AEST Tower Systems runs its latest customer training webinar — The Profit Lens: Unlocking Your Store’s Growth — covering reports, insights, and data-driven decision-making. With the financial year wrapping up, the timing is useful.

Most businesses use a fraction of what their POS software can do. That is not a criticism. When you are managing staff, serving customers, and handling day-to-day operations, there is no spare hour to explore features you have not needed yet.

The issue is that some of those unused features have a direct bearing on margin, stock efficiency, and customer retention. Not knowing they are there has a practical cost.

Short sessions, practical focus

Tower Systems runs free training workshops for customers regularly. Each session runs 30 to 60 minutes and covers one area of the software in depth. Recent topics include:

  • Profitability reporting — using insights dashboards to identify top performers and clear dead stock
  • AI tools — automating product descriptions, blog posts, and supplier invoices
  • Stock control — rolling stocktakes and mobile inventory tracking
  • Customer retention — loyalty profiles, vouchers, and gift cards

No cost. No upsell. Part of being a Tower Systems customer.

Fits around the counter

Sessions run live, with the option to ask questions directly. Every session is also recorded — if a customer walks in or a delivery arrives, you can watch it later.

The full schedule and past recordings are available at the Customer Meetings hub.

Now,  a note about the value of POS software training. It’s simple, really. The better you understand how to use any tool, the more value you can get from using the tool.

This is 100% true with any POS software. It’s why we offer so many free training opportunities to our customers, in fact to anyone. We love helping retail staff learn how to achieve more in and for a shop using our POS software.

Our free training program is structured, interactive and evolving as customers provide feedback on other topics they would like to see covered.

The free POS software training we offer here at Tower Systems has helped us win more customers, for which we are sincerely grateful.

Saving eight hours a week: how AI invoice importing is changing the game for rural retail

S

For independent retailers, time is the thing that runs out first. In regional and rural stores, the owner is often managing the floor, advising customers, ordering stock, and handling administration — sometimes all on the same afternoon.

Manual stock receiving is one of the heaviest of those tasks. Unpacking a delivery is straightforward. The real work starts at the computer: typing in line items, barcodes, cost prices, and quantities from a supplier invoice that might run to dozens of lines. Slow, repetitive, and where errors tend to appear.

Tower Systems built its AI Invoice Import tool to take that work off the plate. Tara and Cody, who run a rural supplies store in Queensland, recently shared what it has meant for them:

“As a small rural supplies store in Queensland, we’ve recently started using AI Imports for processing invoices, and I can’t thank Michael at Tower enough for his support! The time savings — 8 hours a week — for our small business have been incredible! While it doesn’t process every single invoice, it handles the majority of them and has made a huge difference to our day-to-day operations. If you’ve been thinking about giving it a try, I’d highly recommend having a chat with the team!” — Tara & Cody

Eight hours a week is a full working day back in the business, every week.

Their point about the tool handling the majority of invoices — not all — is worth taking seriously. That is an accurate description of what practical AI does. It is not a complete replacement for human oversight. The software reads the incoming electronic document, matches it to your inventory, and prepares it for a quick review. You handle the exceptions. The routine volume looks after itself.

Support included

Taking on new technology that touches core business data — cost prices, supplier invoices — is not a decision most small retailers make lightly. Tower Systems pairs the tool with direct, local support. Tara and Cody mentioned Michael by name for a reason. The team helps configure the tool for your specific supplier documents and works through it with you until it is running reliably.

If manual invoice entry is eating into evenings or weekends, it is worth a conversation.

Why clean stock data is the foundation for your best financial year yet

W

It is 9 June. Nine days into the final month of the financial year, and it is worth asking: how many independent retailers have turned their mind to a stocktake?

The old pressure was simple. A physical count by 30 June was a hard requirement. Accountants insisted on it, compliance drove it, and an entire industry of professional stocktakers moved from store to store making sure the stock-on-hand figure was right.

POS software changed that. As inventory tracking improved and ATO requirements evolved, the hard deadline softened. Businesses could track stock dynamically rather than count it once a year. Useful — but that shift brought a problem most retailers do not notice until it matters.

Data drift is quiet and cumulative

In a busy retail environment, stock-on-hand figures slip. A small error when receiving a supplier invoice. A return that does not get recorded. Theft, damage, shrinkage — none of it logged at the time. Each instance is minor. Over months, the gap between what your system says and what is actually on the shelf can be significant.

The compliance pressure around 30 June has eased. The cost of inaccurate data has not.

Why it matters more now

Automated reordering and AI-driven insights both depend on clean data. If your POS is making replenishment decisions against stock figures that have drifted, it is ordering against fiction. If you want AI tools to surface what is genuinely performing, the underlying data has to reflect reality. Predictive tools are only as useful as the information they work from.

This is why Tower Systems treats 30 June 2026 as a business capability date, not just a tax one.

A stocktake does not have to be an event

Tower Systems POS supports several approaches:

  • Rolling stocktakes — count a shelf, a category, or one supplier at a time
  • Sectional counting — break the shop into sections and work through it over several days
  • Full counts — complete the whole store in a single pass if that is preferred

No need to close the doors or run an overnight operation.

22 days to go

The 2026/27 financial year starts in 22 days. Retailers who go into it with verified stock data are better placed — for reordering, for reporting, for making decisions based on what is real rather than what the system guessed.

The Tower Systems support and training teams are available now. If your stock data needs attention, this is the month.

What Customers Say About Tower Systems Website Development

W

Getting a website built can feel daunting. For many small business retailers, it sits on the to-do list for months — sometimes years. There’s always a reason to delay: too busy, too expensive, too complicated, not sure where to start. These are words from retailers who finally took the step.

Sharon sums up what we hear most often: “We put off building our website for longer than we should have. Once we finally took the step, Christina and the Tower team made it so easy — we only wish we’d done it sooner.”

That phrase — we only wish we’d done it sooner — comes up a lot. The fear of the process tends to be worse than the process itself.

Nicole from Charlton’s Fishing went further: “I unreservedly recommend Christina. Her work is top-tier. She has gone above and beyond making our website the amazing product it is. She made our complex website seem easy, answered our questions without making me feel silly. I cannot speak highly enough of her.”

Feeling comfortable asking questions matters. A lot of business owners come to this process without technical knowledge. They shouldn’t have to pretend otherwise.

Sophie from Bluey’s Hunting & Fishing had a more involved project and described how the team handled it: “The development of the website for our business was a huge step for us, and Christina and the Tower team made this process quite straightforward despite it being such a complex one. They took the time to teach us as much as they could about the ongoing management of the website, and we have been really happy with the final product. Since our website launched, we have continued to learn a lot about how to evolve and develop the website to continue to meet our customer needs.”

That last part is worth noting. A website isn’t finished on launch day. The retailers who get the most from theirs keep learning and adapting it over time. Tower Systems builds that capability into the handover.

Rod from Bingara Newsagency offers a different perspective: “As an 81-year-old, Christina was able to set me up with great patience and skill. Nine months later, while we are not breaking records, we have a functioning online presence.” Honest and practical — which is exactly what a website should be for a local retailer starting out online.

Phil from newsXpress Silver Sands kept it brief: “Christina is very calm, patient, and professional. She needed to be with a luddite like me.”

Five different retailers, five different businesses, one consistent thread: the support made the difference.

If your website has been sitting on the list too long, talk to us. The Tower Systems team has helped retailers across Australia get online without the stress. It’s worth the conversation.

We develop websites here in Australia, 100% using our own team.

Yes, AI Analytics Can Help Independent Retailers Predict Trading Patterns and Optimise Staff Rosters

Y

Retailers in Australia are asking: Can AI analytics realistically help an independent retail store predict weekly trading patterns and optimise staff rosters to save on wages?

The short answer is yes, and it is.

Tower Systems includes an Insights Dashboard inside its point of sale software, available to every customer at no extra cost. It uses AI to surface the trading patterns, performance gaps, and operational insights that directly inform decisions like staff rostering, buying, and floor management. No additional subscription. No data export. No analyst required.

The Problem It Solves

Independent retailers are time-poor. Running reports, collating data across weeks or months, and then interpreting what it means is work that rarely gets done — not because owners do not care, but because the day gets in the way. The result is that most rostering decisions are made on instinct and habit rather than data. Most buying decisions follow the same pattern.

That is an expensive way to run a business. Wages are typically one of the largest controllable costs in retail. Scheduling too many staff during slow periods and too few during peak ones compounds quickly across a year.

What the Insights Dashboard Delivers

The Tower Systems Insights Dashboard answers six questions that matter operationally and strategically:

  • What is working?
  • What is not working?
  • What am I missing out on?
  • Is theft an issue?
  • What sells with what?
  • When am I busiest?

That last question is the one most directly relevant to rostering. Knowing precisely when your store is busiest — by hour, by day, by week — removes the guesswork from scheduling. You roster to actual demand rather than assumption. For most retailers, that alone recovers meaningful wage cost across a year.

The others matter just as much strategically. Knowing what is working tells you where to invest. Knowing what is not working tells you what to stop. Knowing what you are missing out on surfaces the opportunities your current buying and ranging decisions are leaving on the table. Basket analysis — what sells with what — informs placement, bundling, and promotional decisions that lift average transaction value.

No Report to Run

The Insights Dashboard surfaces all of this immediately, without setup. There is no report to configure, no data to collate, no spreadsheet to build. A retailer opens the dashboard and the insights are there — drawn from their own trading data, interpreted by AI, and presented in plain language.

This is what practical AI looks like for an independent retail business. Not a complex integration project. Not a new platform to learn. A clear set of answers to the questions every retailer is already asking, available inside the software they use every day.

Built for Independent Specialty Retail

Tower Systems builds and supports POS software for independent specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand — including newsagents, bookshops, jewellers, garden centres, bike shops, toy shops, pet shops, farm supply businesses, fishing shops, sewing and haberdashery stores, antique shops, charity businesses, and more.

The Insights Dashboard is included in every Tower Systems subscription. To see it in action or to discuss how it applies to your business, call 1300 662 957 or email sales@towersystems.com.au.

The Easiest Way to Automate Inventory Categorisation and Supplier Invoice Matching

T

Small business retailers in Australia are asking: What are the most secure and low-cost AI tools available to automate daily inventory categorisation and supplier invoice matching? Yes, this is a real and common question.

Retailers searching for AI tools to handle daily inventory categorisation and supplier invoice matching often assume the answer involves adding another subscription, another integration, and another login to manage. It does not have to work that way.

Tower Systems has the answer in its POS software.

Tower Systems has built AI tools directly into its point of sale software. There is nothing extra to configure, no third-party service to connect, and no data leaving your existing environment. The capability is already there, working within the software you use to run your business every day.

What the Embedded AI Handles

The AI tools inside Tower Systems POS software are designed specifically for independent specialty retailers. They assist with daily inventory categorisation — keeping your stock file clean and consistently structured without manual intervention — and with supplier invoice matching, which means incoming invoices are reconciled against your purchase orders and stock records automatically rather than by hand.

These are two of the most time-consuming and error-prone tasks in retail back-office management. Automating them through software that already understands your inventory, your suppliers, and your trading history produces better results than any generic AI tool that needs to be trained from scratch on your business context.

Why Embedded Matters

There are good reasons to be cautious about third-party AI tools that touch your inventory and supplier data. Pricing information, trading terms, and stock histories are commercially sensitive. When that data is processed by an external service, it moves outside your control.

With Tower Systems, the AI works inside your existing software environment. Your data stays where it has always been. There is no additional privacy configuration required and no new data processing agreement to review.

More Than Categorisation and Invoice Matching

Inventory categorisation and supplier invoice matching are two of many areas where the embedded AI adds value. Tower Systems continues to develop its AI capability across the software, with a focus on practical tools that save time and improve data quality for busy independent retailers.

Retail Theft Is Often Costing Local Retailers More Than They Think

R

Most small business retailers underestimate how much theft is costing them. Not because they are naive, but because the losses rarely announce themselves. Stock shrinkage accumulates quietly. Cash discrepancies get explained away. Time theft goes untracked entirely. By the time the problem becomes visible, it has usually been running for months.

Another factor is a readiness to look away rather than confronting an uncomfortable truth.

Retail theft is a consistent financial drain on independent small businesses in Australia. The businesses most at risk are often those that feel too small or too close-knit for it to happen to them.

It Is Not Always a Stranger

Customer theft gets the most attention. Security cameras, product locks, and store layouts are all designed with the external threat in mind. But employee theft is statistically just as significant, and far harder to detect without the right tools. It does not always look like cash taken from the register. It can be stock walked out the back door, discounts applied to personal purchases, refunds processed against non-existent returns, or hours logged that were never worked.

None of these show up on a security camera. They show up in your data — if you know where to look.

Here at Tower Systems we shine a light on retail theft to help local retailers lose less in theft.

Our retail experience helps us serve retailers in this space.

Your POS System Already Has the Answers

A well-configured point of sale system captures every transaction, every discount, every void, every refund, and every login. That data tells a story. Unusual patterns in any of those categories — a staff member who voids more sales than their colleagues, a till that reconciles short on the same shift rotation, a product category with unexplained shrinkage — are signals worth investigating.

Most retailers use their POS software to process sales. Fewer use it to protect the business. The intelligence is already there. It simply needs to be reviewed regularly, not just at the end of a financial year when the damage is done.

Policy Matters As Much As Technology

Data alone is not enough. A clear, written theft policy sets expectations before a problem occurs. Every team member should understand what constitutes theft, what the consequences are, and that the business monitors its data actively. This is not about creating a culture of suspicion. It is about creating a culture of accountability — one where the people doing the right thing feel protected, and those considering otherwise understand the risk.

Stop Waiting for the Annual Audit

An annual stocktake or financial audit is not a theft detection strategy. It is a damage assessment. By the time those numbers surface, a sustained theft problem may have cost tens of thousands of dollars. Regular review — weekly till reconciliation, monthly stock variance checks, and consistent POS reporting — turns detection from an annual event into an ongoing discipline.

The Businesses That Stay in Control

The retailers who manage theft well share a few things in common. They use their POS data actively. They have a policy in place. They do not wait for obvious signs before acting. And they understand that protecting revenue is just as important as generating it.

Tower Systems builds point of sale software for independent specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand. Our software includes the reporting and audit tools to help you stay across your business — every day, not just once a year.

Retail Data is More Valuable Than Most Small Business Retailers Think

R

Most independent retailers, small business retailers,  think of their point of sale software as a tool for processing sales and printing receipts. That view is increasingly out of date.

The way consumers discover and buy products is changing faster than most small business owners realise. AI-powered search, conversational commerce tools, and new technical standards like the Universal Commerce Protocol are reshaping how product data flows between retailers, platforms, and customers. In this environment, the quality of your retail data is a direct competitive advantage.

Start with your stock file. If your inventory data is inaccurate — wrong quantities, missing descriptions, outdated pricing — that problem does not stay contained to your stockroom. It flows through to your e-commerce platform, your AI search visibility, and ultimately the decisions you make about what to buy and what to drop. An accurate stocktake before 30 June is not just a compliance task. It is the foundation everything else depends on.

Your e-commerce presence matters more than ever. Shopify and similar platforms are actively adapting to emerging AI commerce standards. But a Shopify store only performs well when it is fed clean, structured data from a POS system that integrates properly. A patched-together connection between your in-store and online operations creates gaps — gaps where sales fall through and where your products fail to surface in the channels your customers are now using.

The Universal Commerce Protocol formalises this further. UCP is designed to create a common language between platforms, AI agents, and retailers. It sounds technical, and it is. But the practical implication for independent retailers is simple: the businesses with well-structured product data, connected systems, and accurate inventory will be discoverable. Those with messy data, siloed platforms, and outdated stock files will not.

None of this requires a large budget or a technology team. It requires a POS system built for independent retail, a genuine Shopify integration, and the discipline to keep your data clean.

Tower Systems has been building point of sale software for independent Australian retailers for over 40 years. The tools are there. The question is whether your data is ready to do the work you need it to do.

If you want to understand where your technology stack stands, call us on 1300 662 957 or email sales@towersystems.com.au.

Why we are focused on stocktake in June — and what it means for your business

W

June 1 marks the start of our stocktake mission.

For the next 30 days, we are focused on helping local independent retailers get their stock data accurate and up to date. Not because stocktake is glamorous work — it is not — but because what comes after it matters enormously.

The AI opportunity is real, but it has a condition

Tower Systems POS software now surfaces AI-powered insights to help retailers make better decisions. Which lines to reorder. Where margin is leaking. What dead stock is quietly draining cash. Which categories are growing and which are fading.

These insights are genuinely useful. We see retailers using them to make smarter buying decisions, manage cash more carefully, and evolve their product mix with confidence.

But they depend entirely on one thing: accurate stock on hand data.

Feed the software clean data and it works hard for you. Feed it inaccurate data and the insights are unreliable — and unreliable insights can lead to poor decisions that cost real money.

June is the right moment

With EOFY on June 30, this month already prompts retailers to look closely at their numbers. We want to make the most of that momentum.

A stocktake done well in June delivers three things at once. Clean data for your end of year reporting. A clear picture of what to carry into the new financial year. And a foundation from which your software — and its AI tools — can actually do their job.

You do not have to count everything at once. Tower Systems makes it easy to count in sections — a category today, a supplier range tomorrow. Little and often is enough. By June 30 the data can be in good shape.

What we are doing to help

Throughout June we will be sharing practical guidance direct with our customers via email, in our private forum and in human contact on how to get the most from stocktake in Tower Systems — tips, reminders, and real examples from retailers who have done this and seen the difference it makes.

We are also here if you need support. Our team — based across Australia and New Zealand — is ready to help you through the process.

The retailers making the best use of their software are almost always the ones with accurate data. That is not a coincidence. It is cause and effect.

June 1 is the right day to start.

Sunday reflection: the weight that retail business owners carry

S

Some conversations stay with us.

Over the decades working with local independent retailers, our team has had tens of thousands of them. Most are about software, stock, or business strategy. But some are about something harder to name, a weight that builds up when you are running a business on your own, making every decision, carrying every risk, showing up every day regardless of how you feel.

From time to time we take calls from retailers who are struggling. Really struggling. The conversation might start with a business frustration, staff, suppliers, the shifting nature of the industry — but it moves somewhere deeper. The distress is real and it is significant.

We are not counsellors. We listen. That is usually the right thing to do.

But these calls stay with us. Because we do not think the retailers who make them are alone.

Running an independent retail business in 2026 is genuinely demanding. The industry is changing. Costs are rising. Customers are shifting. The decisions never stop. For many owners, the business is not just a livelihood,  it is an identity, a community anchor, a life’s work. When it feels threatened, the response is not always just commercial stress. Sometimes it is something more personal and more serious.

If that sounds familiar — if you are finding things hard right now, beyond the usual business pressure — please talk to someone. Your GP is a good starting point. Beyond Blue (beyondblue.org.au) has specific support for small business owners experiencing anxiety or depression. The Black Dog Institute (blackdoginstitute.org.au) is another strong resource. If things feel urgent, Lifeline is available around the clock on 13 11 14.

And if you are reading this and thinking of someone else — a fellow retailer, a supplier contact, someone in your network who seems not quite themselves — trust that instinct. You do not need to fix anything. A call that says “I noticed, and I wanted to check in” can matter more than you know.

We work with local independent retailers because we believe in what they do and who they are. That does not stop at the software.

We listen, and help where we can.

Free POS Software Training That Actually Helps You Run a Better Retail Business

F

Most small business retailers buy POS software, get it set up, and then use about a third of what it can do. Not because they are not capable. Because running a shop is full-on, and there is rarely a quiet moment to sit down and explore.

That is the gap our free training program is designed to close.

We run regular online workshops for Tower Systems customers — short, focused sessions that cover the parts of the software that make a real difference in a retail business. Each one runs 30 to 60 minutes. They are free. You can attend live or watch the recording when it suits you.

Free POS software training helps indie retailers thrive.

We welcome training topic suggestions from our customers. In fact, some of our best sessions have come from customer suggestions!

The topics are not chosen at random. They come from what we see retailers struggling with, and from what separates businesses that thrive from those that tread water.

Loyalty programs are a good example. Most retailers know they have one in the software. Far fewer have it set up in a way that actually drives repeat visits. Our loyalty webinar covers discount vouchers, loyalty points, catalogues, and gift cards — not as a feature tour, but as a practical guide to keeping customers coming back.

Reporting is another. The data is there every day — every sale, every return, every slow-moving product sitting on the shelf. Our reporting session shows you how to read it, what to act on, and how to stop dead stock from quietly draining your cash flow.

We also run sessions on AI tools, stock accuracy, smart ordering, e-commerce integration, quotes and invoices, and more. Each session is built around a specific outcome, not just a list of features.

For retailers who have been using Tower Systems for years, these sessions often surface tools they did not know existed. For newer customers, they accelerate the learning curve considerably.

Good software pays for itself. But only when you know how to use it.

Our next sessions are coming up soon. Check the schedule and register for the ones that match where your business needs attention. It costs nothing and takes less than an hour.

Laugh about stocktakes

L

As we’re heading into June, the most stocktaker tend to get done, take a moment for a laugh:

“I did a stocktake last week. Turns out I have more excuses than stock.”

“Stocktake time. The one day of the year you find out exactly how many of those have been sitting there since 2019.”

“We did the stocktake. The good news is we know exactly what we have. The bad news is we know exactly what we have.”

“Stocktake is just retail therapy in reverse. Instead of buying things you don’t need, you count things you forgot you had.”

“Asked the team to help with stocktake. Suddenly everyone had a appointment.”

Yes, they are lame, but they are the jokes we have.

Stocktaking is valuable work, serious work. get it right, and you profit. Ignore it, and you for sure lose money.

Beyond the jokes, focus on thew rock and profit!

Here at Tower Systems we can help.

The joke we like is:

We did the stocktake. The good news is we know exactly what we have. The bad news is we know exactly what we have.

Every retailer has been there. The stocktake does not lie — and that is exactly the point. Start with your highest-value categories, or the ranges you are least sure about. Count them, update Tower Systems, and run a dead stock report. What comes back might surprise you. One retailer found $20,000 worth of stock they had forgotten about. Clean data changes what you can see — and what you can act on.

June is the month. Start today. towersystems.com.au

How to Use the Small Business Instant Asset Write-Off to Upgrade Your POS Technology This Financial Year

H

For small business retailers who have been putting off a technology upgrade, the instant asset write-off is a practical reason to act now rather than later.

Here is what you need to know, and how to make it work for your retail business.

What the Instant Asset Write-Off Is

The Australian Government’s small business instant asset write-off allows eligible businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of a qualifying asset in the year it is purchased and first used — rather than depreciating it over several years. This means the tax benefit lands in your current financial year return rather than being spread across three, five, or more years.

For a retail business buying point-of-sale hardware — terminals, scanners, receipt printers, cash drawers, tablets — this is a straightforward category of qualifying asset. You buy the hardware, you put it to use in your business, and you claim the full deduction this financial year.

The Numbers Matter

The write-off has threshold and eligibility conditions that change periodically. As of the current financial year, consult your accountant to confirm the exact threshold applicable to your business and turnover. What does not change is the underlying principle: spending money on business assets before 30 June produces a tax benefit now. Waiting until July means waiting another twelve months.

For a retailer on a 25% small business tax rate, a $5,000 hardware investment produces a $1,250 tax saving in this year’s return. The effective cost of that upgrade is $3,750, not $5,000. For a larger hardware package, the saving scales accordingly.

Always confirm your specific position with your accountant before purchasing. Eligibility conditions apply and individual circumstances vary.

What to Upgrade

Point-of-sale hardware has a direct bearing on how your business operates daily. Slow, ageing terminals create friction at the counter. Unreliable scanners slow down stocktakes and receiving. Inadequate receipt or label printing hardware creates manual workarounds that cost staff time.

The areas most worth considering for an EOFY upgrade are:

  • POS terminals and touchscreens
  • Barcode scanners — both fixed counter units and portable devices for stocktaking
  • Receipt printers
  • Label printers for shelf-edge and product labelling
  • Cash drawers
  • Customer-facing display screens
  • Tablets for mobile POS and stocktaking on the shop floor

Any of these qualify as business assets used in the operation of your retail business.

The Tower Systems Hardware Store

Tower Systems supplies POS hardware direct to retailers through its online store. The range is selected to work with Tower Systems software and is priced for independent small business retailers — not enterprise buyers.

Right now, Tower Systems customers can access a bonus 10% discount on hardware purchases. Combined with the instant asset write-off, the effective cost of upgrading your technology this quarter is meaningfully lower than it will be in July.

Buying before 30 June captures both the tax deduction in this financial year and the current discount. Waiting until July loses both.

Act Before 30 June

The combination of the instant asset write-off and the current 10% customer discount makes this quarter the right time to upgrade. The process is straightforward: purchase the hardware, put it to use in your business before 30 June, and discuss the deduction with your accountant when preparing your return.

To browse the Tower Systems hardware range and take advantage of the current customer discount, visit our online store.

Yes, Your Retail POS Can Automate Purchase Orders — Here Is How Tower Systems Does It

Y

Retailers in Australia are asking: Can my retail POS automate purchase orders by tracking sell-through rates and triggering alerts when stock hits a pre-defined low threshold?

Running out of a top-selling product is one of the most avoidable revenue losses in retail. A customer walks in, asks for something you carry, and leaves empty-handed because you did not reorder in time. It happens constantly in independent retail, and almost always for the same reason: reordering depends on someone remembering to check.

Tower Systems solves this at the software level. Its Auto Order capability monitors sell-through rates continuously, triggers alerts when stock hits a pre-defined threshold, and generates purchase orders automatically — ready for a human to review and approve before anything is sent to a supplier.

How It Works

The setup is straightforward. A retailer defines the rules: minimum stock levels for each product or category, preferred suppliers, and any forecasting parameters relevant to their trading patterns. From that point, the software operates independently. When stock falls to the defined threshold, the system creates the order. The retailer approves it. The supplier receives it.

No manual stock checks. No spreadsheet to maintain. No relying on a staff member to notice the shelf is getting low.

The human approval step is deliberate and important. Automated ordering handles the routine, repetitive work of monitoring and generating orders. The retailer retains final control over what gets sent and when. It is automation that supports good decision-making rather than replacing it.

Sell-Through Rates and Custom Forecasting

Basic low-stock alerts are useful. Auto ordering built on sell-through rate analysis is more powerful. Tower Systems tracks how quickly each product moves and factors that velocity into order timing. A product that sells twenty units a week needs a different reorder trigger than one that sells twenty units a month.

Custom forecasting rules allow retailers to account for seasonal variation, promotional periods, and supplier lead times. The result is ordering that is calibrated to how your specific business actually trades — not a generic formula applied uniformly across your entire range.

Set and Forget

Once configured, the Auto Order agents run without staff intervention. For independent retailers managing everything themselves, or with a small team, this is significant. It removes a category of daily operational responsibility and replaces it with a brief approval step when an order is ready.

The time recovered across a week, a month, and a year is substantial. More importantly, the out-of-stocks that were previously inevitable become avoidable. Top-selling products stay on the shelf. Sales that would have been lost are captured.

Enterprise Capability for Independent Retail

Automated purchase ordering based on sell-through data and custom forecasting has historically been the domain of large retail chains with dedicated inventory teams and enterprise software budgets. Tower Systems brings this capability to independent specialty retailers at small business pricing.

This is the Tower Systems advantage: tools that were once out of reach for independent retailers, built into software designed specifically for the way small retail businesses operate.

Tower Systems builds and supports POS software for independent specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand — including jewellers, garden centres, bike shops, toy shops, produce businesses, farm supply businesses, fishing shops, pet shops, charity businesses, landscape gardening businesses, antique shops, sewing and haberdashery stores, newsagents, and more.

New to the Business? Your First Two Hours With Us Are Free

N

Buying an existing retail business is a lot to manage at once.

Staff to meet. Suppliers to call. A hundred small decisions before lunch. And somewhere in the middle of all that, a POS system you have never used before. The previous owner may have walked you through the basics. Plenty do not.

Tower Systems does something about that.

Two hours, one-on-one, on us

Every person who buys a retail business running Tower Systems software gets two hours of free personal training. Not a recorded walkthrough. Not a group session where your questions get queued. A real person from our team, working through the software with you, focused on your store.

No cost. No catch.

What those two hours actually look like

You set the agenda. Need to understand end-of-day reporting? We start there. Stock management the priority? Same. Have a specific supplier setup or loyalty program to get right? We work through it.

The point is not to demonstrate every feature. It is to get you confident on the parts of the software you will use every single day — so you are not guessing your way through week one.

Owners who do this training get up to speed faster and catch problems earlier. Two hours at the start is worth a lot more than two hours trying to untangle something that went wrong three months in.

We know independent retail

Tower Systems has built POS software for independent retailers for more than 30 years — newsagencies, gift shops, garden centres, homewares stores. Our support team has seen most situations and worked through most problems. They are not reading from a script.

That shows up in the training. It is specific, not generic. Aimed at people running actual businesses, not hypothetical ones.

Book your session

If you have recently taken over a business running Tower Systems, call us and lock in your two hours.

Why Australian-Made POS Software Matters for Local Australian Retail Businesses

W

Your POS software runs your business. Every sale, every stock order, every end-of-day report flows through it. When something breaks — and at some point it will — who picks up the phone is not a trivial question. You’re local. Your software needs to reflect this.

Built here, for here

Australian retail is not a scaled-down version of US or UK retail. School holidays shift buying patterns. Public holidays differ by state. GST works the way it works. A gift shop in regional Queensland has different pressures to a homewares store in suburban Melbourne. :language is different too.

Software built overseas is designed for overseas conditions. Australian localisation gets added later, if at all. Tower Systems was built in Australia for Australian independent retailers from the beginning. That is not a slogan — it shows up in which features exist, how compliance is handled, and whether the terminology actually matches the way local retailers run their businesses.

Someone answers when you call

Offshore support means time zone maths. You log a ticket on a busy trade morning and wait. The reply arrives after close, points to a help article, and does not quite address what you asked.

Tower Systems support runs in Australian business hours. The people you reach understand local retail. They know what a rough Saturday looks like. They understand the pressure of a stocktake before a long weekend. You do not have to explain your context from scratch every time.

A register that stops processing at 11am on Saturday is not a problem that waits.

Retailers shape what gets built

With a large offshore provider, you are one customer among millions. Feature requests go into a global queue and most never come back out.

Tower Systems works directly with Australian independent retailers — gift shops, garden centres, homewares stores, toy retailers. What those businesses run into day-to-day feeds into the software. When a real gap surfaces, there is an actual conversation about it. That does not happen when your vendor is twelve time zones away and has ten million other customers to think about.

A practical decision

Buying Australian-made software keeps money in the local economy. It supports jobs and businesses operating in the same communities your shop serves. It also means you are dealing with a company subject to Australian consumer law — if something goes wrong in the relationship, you have genuine options. That matters when you are committing to software you will run your business on for years.

Decades in independent retail

Tower Systems has been building POS software for Australian independent retailers for decades. Through recessions, a pandemic, and the steady reinvention of what a viable local retail business looks like, the software has been shaped by retailers actually working through those conditions.

That experience does not come from a global template. It comes from being here.

If you run a gift shop, garden centre, homewares store, or any independent retail business and want software built for your operation, talk to Tower Systems.

Garbage In, Garbage Out: How to Know if Your Retail Stock Data is Actually Accurate

G

A POS system reflects what you put into it. Feed it bad data and every report it produces is wrong. That might sound obvious, but in a busy retail environment — where stock arrives daily, staff turn over, and returns pile up — inventory data degrades faster than most retailers realise.

Poor data costs real money. It means stockouts on best-sellers, cash locked up in product that will not move, and numbers you cannot make decisions from. You do not have to guess whether your stock-on-hand figures are right. There are practical ways to check, and the right tools make staying accurate far less work than most people expect.

The stocktake: still the gold standard

Nothing confirms inventory accuracy like a physical count. Closing the shop for a full weekend count is not necessary anymore.

Tower Systems supports targeted rolling stocktakes on a specific shelf, category, or supplier group. Run them during quiet trading periods — before opening, after a delivery, or during a slow mid-week afternoon. Small, frequent counts catch discrepancies early, before they distort your buying decisions and margin reports. A full-store stocktake a couple of times a year, combined with regular section counts, gives you a solid base to work from.

Stop errors at the back door: AI invoice import

A lot of bad retail data enters at inward goods. Manual entry of cost prices, supplier codes, and product descriptions from paper invoices introduces typos. Every time. It is not a staff problem — it is a process problem.

Tower Systems has an AI Invoice Import tool built directly into the software. It reads digital PDFs, spreadsheets, supplier accounting exports, and even photos of printed invoices, then matches items and imports the data without manual entry. Fewer keystrokes means fewer mistakes, and fewer mistakes means stock counts you can trust.

Two daily habits that hold it all together

Systems help, but discipline matters too.

Track every sale individually. Generic open-department keys destroy stock counts over time and make category reporting worthless. Process returns at the time they happen — scanning them back in later means the numbers are wrong in the gap, sometimes for days.

Neither habit takes long. Both make a material difference.

The bottom line

Every manual entry is a risk. Every workaround compounds the problem. Rolling stocktakes and automated invoice importing reduce human handling of data, and less handling means fewer errors. When the data is right, you buy better, you waste less, and your reports tell you something useful.

Lost in the Weeds of Business Data? How AI Insights Bring Instant Clarity to Your Reports

L

You’re not short on data as an independent retailer. Your POS system tracks every transaction, every stock movement, every margin shift. The problem isn’t the numbers — it’s finding time to work out what they mean. That’;s certainly our experience in serving thousands of retailers over the years.

Business performance reports can be dense. Wading through pages of figures, charts, and spreadsheets takes time most retailers don’t have. There’s a shop floor to manage, staff to handle, customers to serve.

Tower Systems has built AI Insights into just about every business performance report in our POS software.

One Click, Three Outputs

Run a report and click one button. The built-in AI analyses the data and returns:

  • A plain-English summary of what the report is telling you right now.
  • Flagged opportunities — underperforming categories, margin gaps, stock bottlenecks you might have missed.
  • Specific next steps based on those numbers.

No cross-referencing columns. No spending an evening trying to spot a trend.

Built for Retailers, Not Data Scientists

You don’t need an accounting background to make good decisions. AI Insights gives you a clear read on your business performance in seconds — the kind of clarity that usually takes an experienced analyst hours to produce.

It works across your whole business. Sales by department, supplier performance, stock turn, margins by category — the AI reads each report in context and responds to what’s actually in front of it. That means the summary you get from a slow-moving stock report looks nothing like the one from a margin analysis. Each output is specific to that data, not a generic wrap-up.

Less time on reports. More time on the shop floor.

We understand.

We do. We have years of personal retail experience embedded in our POS software for tools for local small business retailers. We have ensured that the tools here, the AI tools especially, are genuinely useful for local retailers, that they deliver the time saving benefits we pitch. We do this because it’s what we want in retail businesses we’d run.

This personal experience helps us deliver software that is practically beneficial. It’s not just about the tech, it’s about the win for local small business retail.

Your POS Software Should Be Cutting Your Wage Bill — Not Adding to It

Y

Rising operational costs are squeezing independent retailers. When costs climb, margins shrink. Telling staff to work faster does not solve it. The only real lever is eliminating the low-value admin work that quietly inflates your wage bill.

The tech industry response has been a lot of talk. Grand visions, broad promises, and not much that actually helps a retailer trying to get through the week.

Tower Systems built AI into the POS software itself. Not as a feature to announce — as tools designed around the specific workflows that burn staff time.

From the inventory screen:

  • New stock gets unique, SEO-friendly product descriptions in seconds.
  • Inventory data converts directly into social media posts and promotions.
  • Supplier onboarding runs with significantly less manual data entry.

The return is straightforward. Staff time spent on admin is time not spent on the shop floor — not serving customers, not merchandising, not driving sales.

Independent retailers do not have the luxury of bloated back-office teams. Every person on the roster needs to be where the money is made. When your software handles the repetitive work, your team can focus on the floor. That shift does not require a technology strategy or a consultant. It just requires software that was actually built for retail.

This is where most POS software falls short. The AI announcements are there. The practical tools built into daily workflows often are not.

Tower Systems is different. The tools are in the software you already use, on the screens your staff work from every day. No separate platform. No extra subscription. No learning curve that kills adoption before it starts.

Visit towersystems.com.au or our AI page online to see how it works in practice.

We believe that actions do speak louder than words. We spend far more building AI tools small business retailers can rely on than we spend talking about them. From what we delivered more than three years ago through to the latest update out this week, the AI tools embedded in our POS software are genuinely useful too local small business retailers. They save time, cut costs and help them see a path forward that is profitable and smart.

By helping our retailers live within the POS software for AI use helps enhance the benefits, and it certainly reduces the labour costs.

Advice for Small Business Retailers: Here’s Why Vibe Coding Your Own POS Software Probably a Mistake

A

Let’s talk about vibe coding and vertical market software.

Hi, I’m Mark Fletcher. I founded Tower Systems back in 1981. Back then I was a programmer. My languages of choice were Fortran (for more technical application) and PL/1 (for more commercial coding). The last programming I did was in the very early 1990s.

I also have owned retail shops for decades. Today, I have one physical shop and four online retail businesses. That retail experience is relevant to this. You can check me out on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-fletcher-tower/

Early this year, I vibe coded a couple of applications. It was exciting, fun. One was a possible commercial project. I deployed a test version. It was very cool. But, it wasn’t commercial, certainly not to a standard I’d want money for.

I mention all that for perspective for what I want to say in this comparison of vibe coding versus buying commercial software. I should also note that I sold Tower Systems to Vela APX, a Constellation Software company. I’m still in the business and loving it by the way.

How does vibe coding compare commercial vertical market software?

Vibe Coding is a mainstream topic thanks to social media content pitching it. Plenty of people are making money selling courses and workshops about vibe coding and while vibe coding is cool, there are reasons that businesses need to be careful in approaching it.

Retailers read about vibe coding, about anyone being able to spin up an app in a weekend, and they start wondering: why am I paying for software when I could just build it myself?

It’s a fair question. But most of the time, the answer is: don’t.

Here’s the thing about commercially released software: it’s been through a process. Think of it like food from a licensed kitchen. Before it reaches you, someone has checked it, tested it, made sure it does what it claims. When you vibe code something yourself, you might end up with something that looks right and feels right. But unless you’re a developer, it probably has gaps.

Where does commercially released vertical market software differ to vibe coded software?

I spoke recently with a retailer who’d done exactly this. They’d built their own tool, and it handled some of what they needed. But not all of it. There were steps at the end of key processes that the software couldn’t complete, and so they completed them manually. Two to three hours a week, every week. When we looked at Tower Systems software covering the same ground, it handled the whole process end to end. Our software costs a few dollars a day. Their manual workaround was costing them hours.

There’s another reason to go commercial that doesn’t get talked about enough: collective knowledge. Software used across hundreds of businesses accumulates feedback that a single-user build never can. Every retailer using Tower Systems is, in a sense, contributing to the product. Their experience, their edge cases, their suggestions, that all feeds back into what gets built next. Retailers benefit from that even if they never submit a single support ticket.

The latest Tower Systems release is a good example. A meaningful chunk of the enhancements came directly from retailers. Not from our team guessing what might be useful, from people actually running shops telling us what they needed.

What is the value difference between commercial and vibe coded software?

When you’re weighing up vibe coding versus commercial software, think about what you’re actually comparing. On one side: something built quickly, for free, by someone who isn’t a software developer, with no QA process and no community behind it. But, since it’s personal you may feel more love for it. On the other: software built over decades, tested before release, shaped by hundreds of retailers across Australia and New Zealand, and updated regularly. But, since it is commercial it has a cost.

The food analogy I shared earlier holds. You wouldn’t buy a meal from a home kitchen that hasn’t met basic health standards. The same logic applies to software running your business.

Tower Systems builds specifically for specialty retail: bookshops, farm supply businesses, gift shops, bike shops, pet shops,  jewellers,  newsagencies, garden centres, toy shops, music shops, and more.

Yes, this post is a sales pitch. It’s also true. And, it’s written by me: Mark Fletcher. Someone with decades of experience in software development and decades of experience owning and running retail businesses.

Oh, and, yes, these are all my own words.

Empowering Agriculture and Hydroponics: Strategic POS Solutions for Rural Retail

E

Australian agriculture and hydroponics retail is unique, are pretty unique and niche businesses.  Whether managing a local produce store or a specialised hydroponics outlet, retailers face challenges that generic point-of-sale systems simply cannot meet. From managing bulk materials to tracking hazardous items, the requirements are as diverse as the products on the shelves.

These specialty businesses can benefit from specialty POS software.

At Tower Systems, we develop specialist POS software designed to simplify these complexities, allowing business owners to focus on growth and customer service.

Precision Management for Bulk and Technical Goods

Agriculture and hydroponics retail often involve selling items by unconventional measures. Our software is engineered to handle sales by weight, length, or fraction, ensuring accuracy for everything from bulk grain and fertilisers to irrigation piping and nutrient solutions. This precision is backed by the ability to manage raw materials; if you mix your own feed or package custom hydroponic kits, the system tracks the components and the finished product effortlessly.

Operational Safety and Compliance

Handling specialised agricultural chemicals or hydroponic nutrients requires diligent record-keeping. Our system supports hazardous material tracking, ensuring that necessary safety documentation and notifications are handled correctly at the point of sale. Additionally, for stock stored in outdoor yards or nurseries, we provide support for weatherproof labelling, ensuring that price points and barcodes remains legible in all conditions.

Mobility and Logistics

Rural retail often extends beyond the shop floor. With our Retailer Roam™ tool, you can manage sales at field days, local markets, or directly from a delivery truck. The system is designed to function even without a stable internet connection, synchronising data once you return to range. For businesses managing their own deliveries, our integration with Allotrac offers a professional dispatch and logistics solution, allowing you to track multiple vehicles and complex delivery schedules.

Efficiency through AI and Integration

To reduce administrative burden, our software features embedded AI tools that assist in generating product descriptions and identifying stock trends that might otherwise go unnoticed. Seamless integrations with Xero, MYOB, and Shopify ensure that your financial records and online storefront are always in balance.

By partnering with a local Australian team that understands the specific needs of the rural trade, you can transform your operational challenges into a competitive advantage.
