Thoughts on the NRF’s Retail’s Big Show in New York

I walked NRF’s Retail’s Big Show through two lenses: as a local independent retailer, and as someone who founded a POS software company in the 1980s specifically to serve that community.

I enjoyed the energy of the floor and the sessions, including the AI deep-dives at the Snowflake Stage. But for a conference dedicated to retail, there were an awful lot of non-retailers telling retailers how to run their businesses. The marketing spin was in overdrive, desperate to sound “empathetic” to capture attention. In exhibition halls loaded with that much hype, it becomes hard to hear anything at all.

Too often, I found myself listening to noise and hearing nothing.

AI is the pitch of the moment, but asking a specific question at a booth rarely yielded a meaningful answer. Too many reps have mastered the jargon but haven’t touched the facts. Interestingly, I saw several companies pitching “new” AI tools that we at Tower Systems actually delivered a couple of years ago. It’s a good reminder that we are still ahead in this space.

On one of the days, I walked the halls specifically looking for “neighborhood,” “local,” or “independent” retail. I couldn’t find it. The floor was dominated by tech giants spending millions in pursuit of the next enterprise deal. I suspect the “local” pitch was missing because winning those customers is hard work. It’s done store-by-store, requiring specialised tools tailored to the unique way independents actually operate.

Reflecting on the show through my retailer eyes—informed by my own shop, several e-commerce sites, and a marketing group of 190 independent retailers—it’s clear that national chains are betting on tech to “manufacture” a better customer experience. They seem to think smarter tech and AI can replace genuine engagement.

They’ve forgotten that retail is personal. AI is no replacement for the authenticity of a local shop. That’s our competitive advantage.

I have plenty more thoughts, but they are commercially valuable and best shared elsewhere. Trips like this are valuable in seeing what others are doing, even though they may be chasing different customers to us.

Why are small business retailers reluctant to act on employee theft in their shops?

Employee theft is the single largest source of loss for small business retailers, yet it is often the most ignored. At Tower Systems, we have seen theft losses reach hundreds of thousands of dollars because the business owner chose not to look. This post explores the psychological barriers that prevent retailers from acting, how our “deep-data” tracking provides irrefutable evidence of fraud, and provides a ready-to-use 12-point Theft Policy to protect your livelihood before it’s too late.

Looking at theft in small business retail, the biggest component of theft loss is from employee theft. We say this based on decades of work helping small business retailers run their businesses. From our small business focussed POS software through to advice we provide in support of this. theft mitigation is an ever present focus for us.

Too often, we are brought into a theft cost discussion when the cost of theft is tens of thousands of dollars and even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In almost every case of employee theft, evidence was there, curated by our software and available to small business retailers. They actively chose to not look at this. So it beggars the question:

Why are small business retailers reluctant to act on employee theft in their shops?

Based on our experience with many different types of local small retail businesses we think disinterest in timely discovery of theft comes down to a preference for avoiding confrontation. You know the old saying – what you don’t know won’t hurt you. It’s human nature, especially if you are close with employees.

We have seen it time and again. We get a call about a data discrepancy and soon enough we have evidence, from data tracking deep held in secure files not accessible staff – irrefutable evidence of theft. We can track it to day and time and show how they were stealing. Our software captures this and here’s what matters – owners of retail businesses using our software have access to this, they can catch theft sooner if they want to.

Retail business owners don’t do this and it costs them as a result.

Too often, employee theft is retail is only discovered when the business is suffering financially. This can be, sometimes, the it is too late to save the business.

Another reason some retailers are reluctant to act on theft is because of their arrogance that it is not happening to them. They done;t allow the possibility that theft is an issue.

THEFT POLICY

1. Theft, any theft, is a crime against this business, its owners, employees and others who rely on us for their income.
2. If you discover any evidence or have any suspicion of theft, please report it to the business owner or most senior manager possible immediately. Doing so could save a considerable cost to the business.
3. We have a zero tolerance policy on theft. All claims will be reported to law enforcement authorities for their investigation.
4. From time to time we have the business under surveillance in an effort to reduce theft. This may mean that you are photographed or recorded in some other way. By working here you accept this as a condition of employment.
5. New employees may be asked to provide permission for a police check prior to commencement of employment. Undertaking the police check will be at our discretion.
6. Cash is never to be left unattended outside the cash drawer or a safe within the business.
7. Credit and banking card payments are not to be accepted unless the physical card is presented and all required processes are followed for processing these.
8. Employees caught stealing with irrefutable evidence face immediate dismissal to the extent permitted by local labour laws.
9. Employees are not permitted to remove inventory, including unsold, topped, magazines, unsold cards or damaged stock from the store without permission.
10. Employees are not permitted to provide a refund to a customer without appropriate management permission.
11. Employees are not permitted to complete sales to themselves, family members or friends.
12. Every dollar stolen from the business by customers and or employees can cost us up to four dollars to recover. This is why vigilance on theft is mission critical for our retail store.

How can I reduce operating costs without losing customers? This is a common question small business retailers are asking. It’s a question rooted in higher power prices, rising rent, rising labour costs and increases in the cost of products they sell.

Before we get to talking about opportunities for reducing costs, it’s useful to consider opportunities for increasing prices. Understanding your store’s performance is not just about looking at today’s takings; it is about identifying trends, measuring growth, and setting evidence-based goals for the future. In our Retailer POS software, the Monthly Sales Comparison Report serves as a sophisticated tool to help you achieve this level of insight.

By comparing two distinct periods, you can pinpoint exactly where your business is thriving and where it may need additional attention.

Accessing the Report

There are two simple ways to find this report within Retailer:

The Top Menu: Navigate to Reports, select Sales Reports, and choose Monthly Sales Comparison.
The Home Screen: Click on the Reports button and select the Monthly Sales Comparison tile.

Customising Your Data

Despite its name, this report is highly flexible. You can compare any two time periods—be it one month versus another, a specific quarter, or year-on-year performance.

To get the most out of your data, the report offers several customisation options:

External Sourcing: If you have an integrated website, you can compare in-store performance against online sales.
Department Filtering: Choose to view all departments or focus on specific areas of your business.
Agency Exclusions: For newsagents or retailers selling low-margin items like stamps or travel cards, you can exclude “Agency” departments. This ensures your
Gross Profit (GP) and sales figures are not skewed by high-turnover, low-margin products
Levels of Detail: You can choose to view a high-level summary by department or dive deeper by including categories and even specific suppliers.

Understanding the Results

The report is presented in three clear sections:

Period One (The Left Column): Displays the data for your most recent selected date range.
Period Two (The Middle Column): Displays the data for the earlier period you are using as a benchmark.
Variance (The Right Column): This is where the magic happens. It shows the growth or decline in both quantity sold and dollar value, expressed as both a raw number and a percentage.

At the bottom of the report, you will find a comprehensive “Total” section. This provides a snapshot of your overall business health, including total sales (both including and excluding GST), the number of transactions, average sale values, and average items per sale.

Using Data for Goal Setting

Data is most valuable when it informs action. By reviewing your performance from the previous year, you can set realistic, data-driven targets for your team. For example, if your “Cards & Wrap” department performed well last January, you might set a goal to increase those sales by another 10% this year.
