POS software helps cake decorating supply businesses

P

Managing a cake supply or decorating business involves balancing a high volume of small items with specialized services like equipment hire. Our Tower Systems POS software is designed to make these daily tasks more efficient, allowing you to focus on your customers rather than your admin. One of the most helpful features for these stores is the ability to create customizable shortcuts on the sales screen. You can set up buttons for your most popular items, such as cake boards or food colorings, so that processing a sale is quick and intuitive.

The system also handles promotional pricing automatically. For example, if a customer buys a set of food colorings, you can set the software to apply a discount once they reach a certain quantity. If you offer equipment hire, such as cake tins, the software tracks deposits and prints specific return instructions directly on the receipt. This level of detail helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures your hire stock is managed professionally.

Keeping your inventory up to date is simplified through our integration with online product databases. When you add a new item, you simply scan the barcode and the software often finds the product name, image, and description for you. If you sell online, you can even use built in tools to generate professional web descriptions based on the product details. For larger updates, the stock manager allows you to change pricing or descriptions for hundreds of items at once, saving you from hours of manual data entry.

We also offer loyalty features that reward your customers without requiring them to fill out forms. You can print discount vouchers at the bottom of receipts based on what they have spent, giving them a reason to return for their next project. This approach builds goodwill and repeat business by offering clear, immediate value.

If you are looking to move from an older system, we make the transition easy. Our team can help extract your current product and customer data and preload it into our software. We also provide full training to ensure you and your staff feel comfortable with the new tools. Whether you are curious about managing variants or want to see how the software integrates with your EFTPOS, we are here to show you how our system can support your unique business needs.

Going beyond POS software, how we help small business retailers thrive

G

Some POS software companies focus on the software from a technical perspective. While we do that here at Tower Systems, we go beyond the software and provide retail management advice based on insights the software curates for each customer business.

From report analysis to AI facilitates retail business performance insights, we help retailers leverage data collected and curated by our POS software.

In our customer workshops and in the advice we provide to retailers, we try and help beyond what’s typical for software companies. We can do this because of years of experience running retail businesses. We speak from that experience. Here’s one example of this. What we share below was is a customer email we sent out a couple of days ago, right before the end of 2025. The advice we share wasn’t asked for. We shared it as part of our desire to help local small business retailers beyond what;s average for a POS software company.

Now, here’s that advice we shared:

Advice on our Monthly Sales Comparison Report.

In preparation for comparing 2025 with 2024 in your business: If you log into our website and go to Onboarding you can access awesome training videos. Here is a summary of what is covered in our training about the Monthly Sales Comparison Report:

Understanding your store’s performance is not just about looking at today’s takings; it is about identifying trends, measuring growth, and setting evidence-based goals for the future. In our Retailer POS software, the Monthly Sales Comparison Report serves as a sophisticated tool to help you achieve this level of insight.

By comparing two distinct periods, you can pinpoint exactly where your business is thriving and where it may need additional attention.

Accessing the Report

There are two simple ways to find this report within Retailer:

  1. The Top Menu: Navigate to Reports, select Sales Reports, and choose Monthly Sales Comparison.
  2. The Home Screen: Click on the Reports button and select the Monthly Sales Comparison tile.

Customising Your Data

Despite its name, this report is highly flexible. You can compare any two time periods—be it one month versus another, a specific quarter, or year-on-year performance.

To get the most out of your data, the report offers several customisation options:

  • External Sourcing: If you have an integrated website, you can compare in-store performance against online sales.
  • Department Filtering: Choose to view all departments or focus on specific areas of your business.
  • Agency Exclusions: For newsagents or retailers selling low-margin items like stamps or travel cards, you can exclude “Agency” departments. This ensures your
  • Gross Profit (GP) and sales figures are not skewed by high-turnover, low-margin products
  • Levels of Detail: You can choose to view a high-level summary by department or dive deeper by including categories and even specific suppliers.

Understanding the Results

The report is presented in three clear sections:

  • Period One (The Left Column): Displays the data for your most recent selected date range.
  • Period Two (The Middle Column): Displays the data for the earlier period you are using as a benchmark.
  • Variance (The Right Column): This is where the magic happens. It shows the growth or decline in both quantity sold and dollar value, expressed as both a raw number and a percentage.

At the bottom of the report, you will find a comprehensive “Total” section. This provides a snapshot of your overall business health, including total sales (both including and excluding GST), the number of transactions, average sale values, and average items per sale.

Using Data for Goal Setting

Data is most valuable when it informs action. By reviewing your performance from the previous year, you can set realistic, data-driven targets for your team. For example, if your “Cards & Wrap” department performed well last January, you might set a goal to increase those sales by another 10% this year.

The Monthly Sales Comparison Report is more than just a summary of the past; it is a roadmap for your future success. We encourage all our customers to dive into their reports and discover the stories their data is telling.

Now, if you’ve run your Monthly Sales Comparison Report  and would like a second opinion on what it shows, shoot a copy of it to us by email and we will take a look at it for you. No cost. Our goal is to help you run a more valuable retail business in 2026.

Small business retail advice: Retail Beyond the Traditional Clock

S

The way we consume media has fundamentally shifted, and retail is following a similar path. In the past, television, radio, and newspapers relied on appointment viewing or listening. You had to be in front of the TV at a specific time or buy the paper before the news became outdated. Today, that model has largely disappeared. People watch what they want on streaming services, listen to podcasts on their own schedule, and get news instantly on their phones. We have moved away from being dictated to by a schedule, choosing instead to engage with content whenever it is most convenient for us.

This ought be key in your 2026 business plan.

Traditional retail often still operates on this older appointment model. A physical shop has set opening hours, and by sticking strictly to those times, you are telling your customers they can only shop with you when you choose to be open. While the personal connection of a physical store is valuable, relying solely on those hours misses a significant shift in consumer behavior. Many people do their shopping late at night or during small windows of free time when a physical storefront might be closed.

This shift is a primary reason why having an online presence is no longer just an optional extra. An e-commerce website allows your business to move beyond the limitations of a physical schedule. It gives your local customers the flexibility to browse and buy at 9:00 PM from their couch, and it opens your doors to shoppers outside your immediate region who would otherwise never have the chance to visit. It is less about replacing the physical shop and more about making sure you are available whenever a customer feels the urge to shop.

At Tower Systems, we see how integrated websites help small retailers stay relevant in this changing landscape. By connecting your POS software to an online store, you ensure that your inventory is always visible and your business is always open for those who prefer to shop on their own terms. It respects the customer’s time and mirrors the flexibility they have grown accustomed to in every other part of their digital lives.

Transitioning to an online model does not have to be a daunting process. It is simply about evolving to meet your customers where they are. If you provide that flexibility, you are much more likely to capture the interest of modern shoppers who value convenience as much as they value the unique products your specialty store offers. Whether it is through a website or social media, being accessible outside of standard business hours is a vital step in building a resilient and modern retail business.

Even if you are online, having something that is working, fundamentally growing your business, is critical for a successful 2026 plan.

Make 2026 the year you leverage AI for your indie retail business

M

Large corporations are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence across their operations to gain a competitive edge. While these announcements often make headlines, the same sophisticated technology is already accessible to independent retailers. At Tower Systems, we have spent years embedding AI tools from leaders like OpenAI and Google Gemini directly into our POS software. This allows small businesses to work smarter and faster, using the same data driven insights that were once reserved for major enterprises.

Small business retailers can win when it comes to AI. They can implement faster and smarter. We have seen this in our Tower Systems POS software community.

Our strong recommendation for 2026 is make AI work for you, make it a key competitive advantage for your business.

One of the most practical applications of this technology is found in daily administration. Instead of manually entering data from invoices, AI tools can now analyze digital documents and automatically extract the necessary data points. This significantly reduces the time spent on paperwork and minimizes human error. Similarly, when it comes to marketing, these tools can generate professional product descriptions and blog posts tailored to your specific tone of voice, helping your shop stand out online with minimal effort.

Beyond administration, AI serves as a powerful consultant for your business strategy. It can analyze your stock to identify items that are consistently underperforming or alert you to potential out-of-stock situations for your best sellers before they happen. By understanding which products tend to sell together, you can make more informed decisions about store layout and promotions. The software even helps uncover subtle patterns that might indicate retail theft, allowing you to address issues long before they impact your balance sheet.

The goal of integrating these tools is not just to provide more data, but to offer meaningful commentary. Traditional, dry reports are being replaced by intuitive summaries of your daily performance, highlighting what actually matters for your business. This shift from raw numbers to actionable insights allows you to make better quality decisions with confidence.

Embracing AI is no longer a choice but a necessary step for any retailer looking to remain competitive. It offers a way to reduce labor costs, increase efficiency, and focus your energy on the parts of your business that require a human touch. Whether you are looking to streamline your buying practices or find new ways to attract shoppers, these tools are designed to support your success in a rapidly changing market. We are here to help you navigate this technology and show you how it can practically benefit your unique retail environment.

Tower Systems serves local independent retailers in Australia and New Zealand

T

Supporting local specialty shops has been the foundation of Tower Systems since 1981. We began by creating software for family-owned businesses, and that focus remains unchanged today. We are not interested in serving large corporations or franchise groups. Instead, we find purpose in helping the local garden center, the family-run jewelry shop, or the neighborhood pet store thrive. We believe that when these small businesses succeed, the benefits flow through to the owners, their employees, and the entire local community.

Our software is built to handle the unique needs of niche industries, specialty retail businesses. Whether you manage inventory by title in a bookshop, track repairs in a bike store, or handle bulk sales in a produce market, the system is designed to simplify your day-to-day operations. This specific focus allows you to spend less time on paperwork and more time sharing your expertise with your customers. It is about giving you the tools to demonstrate your local knowledge and build a genuine connection with the people who walk through your door.

Profitability is at the heart of our partnership. Our retail management software helps you identify what is working in your shop and where you might have opportunities to improve. By providing clear insights into your stock and sales patterns, we help you make informed decisions that protect the health of your business. We want to see you have the right items on hand when your customers need them, ensuring your shop remains a vibrant part of the local economy.

We view ourselves as a small business serving other small businesses. This shared perspective means we understand the challenges you face and are committed to offering personal, human-first service. We are not a high-pressure sales company. We would rather listen to your specific needs and see if we are a good match for your goals. If our values align, we work alongside you to build a stronger, more resilient retail business.

If you run an independent specialty store and are looking for a partner who truly values local retail, we would appreciate the chance to talk. From antique shops and fishing stores to newsagents and toy shops, we are here to help you navigate the future of specialty retail with confidence.

2025 has been the year Agentic AI made a huge divergent to retail, especially small business retailers

2

Technology is often buried in buzzwords, and “Agentic AI” is currently one of the loudest. While global tech giants spend millions marketing it as a futuristic concept, the reality for a small business retailer is much simpler. Agentic AI refers to systems designed to take autonomous, goal-oriented actions to achieve an outcome.

In practical terms, Agentic AI is about removing the multiple manual steps usually required to finish a task.

For an independent retailer, the most useful example of this is automated stock ordering. Traditionally, keeping shelves full is a labor-intensive cycle of running reports, analyzing sales data, identifying what is missing, and manually creating orders for various suppliers. It is a process that is easy to put off when the shop gets busy, which often leads to top-selling items being out of stock right when customers want them most.

Our approach to Agentic AI here at Tower Systems, in our POS software changes this dynamic.

Within the Tower Systems POS software, you can set “auto-order” rules that handle the analysis and preparation for you. For instance, you might instruct the system to maintain a three-week buffer of stock based on your sales history from the last few months. Once these rules are set, the software works in the background to generate orders on a schedule you choose. Instead of spending hours on spreadsheets, you simply receive a notification when an order is ready for a quick review and a final click to send.

This technology sits alongside several other practical AI tools already built into the system. You can feed a PDF invoice from almost any supplier into the software, and it will automatically extract stock codes, costs, and quantities. This turns hours of manual data entry into a task that takes minutes. We also offer tools to help generate professional product descriptions for your website or compare your pricing against local competitors to ensure you remain competitive.

We are also moving away from traditional, dense reports. The “end of shift” analysis now provides a written summary of the day, offering insights into sales trends and performance rather than just a wall of numbers. This shift from raw data to actionable insights helps you make better decisions without needing to be a data analyst.

Everything we build is grounded in the reality of the shop floor. Our founder, Mark Fletcher, has owned and operated local retail businesses for over thirty years. We test these tools in real-world environments to ensure they solve the actual problems retailers face every day. While larger chains are rolling out their own enterprise-level AI, we are committed to ensuring that independent local businesses have access to the same level of technology to help them compete and thrive.

Agentic AI is real and here for local independent small business retailers in Australia and New Zealand.

We are grateful to our user community for their embrace of our software.

Smart POS software loyalty tools help local small business retailers thrive

S

Building a loyal customer base often involves more than just points and complicated sign-up forms. Many shoppers today are wary of sharing personal data or keeping track of abstract points that hold uncertain value. In contrast, people immediately understand the worth of a cash discount. A voucher for a specific dollar amount printed at the bottom of a receipt feels like a tangible gift that provides instant motivation to look around the shop one more time.

This approach is particularly effective for businesses with one-off visitors or in areas where people are mindful of their daily spending. Unlike traditional loyalty programs that require long-term commitment, a discount voucher works in the moment. It is common for a small credit to give a shopper the permission they need to justify a much larger purchase they had already been considering. By offering a small, clear saving, you often see customers return to the counter to spend significantly more than the value of the voucher itself.

Setting up these loyalty vouchers, discount vouchers, within the Tower Systems POS software is a straightforward process that takes only a few minutes. You have complete control over the parameters, such as the minimum spend required to trigger a voucher or specific rules for when they can be redeemed. Because the software handles the generation automatically, there is no extra work for your staff at the checkout. You can even build the cost of these rewards into your pricing model, ensuring that the growth in sales directly supports your bottom line.

Retailers who have moved away from traditional points in favor of these simple vouchers often see a measurable impact on their net profit. The transparency of the offer builds a sense of goodwill that is hard to replicate with more complex systems. If you are looking for a way to encourage repeat visits and increase the value of every sale, these vouchers offer a practical solution that respects your customers’ time and preferences.

We are always available to help you configure these settings and find the right balance for your specific shop. It is a small change that can lead to a much more motivated and engaged community of shoppers.

We have heard so many success stories from our small business retail customers using the discount voucher tools in our POS software.

Advice on making Boxing Day sales more valuable

A

Boxing Day sales offer a unique moment for small retailers to reset, even in areas where the event isn’t a local tradition. It is a chance to move through older inventory and reclaim the capital tied up in stock that is no longer serving your business. By joining the broader retail conversation, you benefit from the general buzz without needing a dedicated marketing budget.

A successful sale is built on genuine value rather than complex rules. The goal is to offer clear, honest savings that make sense to your customers immediately. You might choose to start on the 26th or wait until the following day if you prefer to stay closed on the holiday itself. Some businesses find success through the first week of January, using the time to declutter and prepare the shop for the year ahead.

Keeping things simple is often the most effective approach. You can reach your audience through a basic email, social media posts, or clear signage in your windows. When it comes to pricing, use straightforward language like half price or set up flat rate tables where everything is a single price point. Bringing your discounted items to the front of the store helps create an immediate sense of opportunity for anyone walking by.

Our POS software is designed to manage these logistics quietly in the background. It allows you to build a sale catalogue with specific pricing, track your progress, and even offer vouchers to turn seasonal shoppers into year round customers. If you sell online, those same sale settings can flow directly to your Shopify store, ensuring your digital storefront stays in sync with your physical shop.

Many of our partners at Tower Systems have already used these tools to prepare for the end of the year. Whether you need help organizing a catalogue or connecting your inventory to the web, we are here to help you clear your shelves and start the new season with a fresh perspective.

Merry Christmas, and have an awesome 2026

M

It’s Christmas Eve and while we are here and serving our local small business customers, today will be quiet, like Christmas Eve in past years.

We’re closing at 1pm and heading off to our families to get Christmas celebrations under way.

Our after hours support arrangements are in place – call the office and our phone system does the rest.

Our chatbot will be working all through.

Thanks for an awesome 2025, have a wonderful Christmas, and have a 2026 full of goals achieved and plenty of smiles.

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Tower Systems!

It shouldn’t be hard to find out the price of POS software

I

In the world of small business retail, there is a fatigue that comes with shopping for POS software. Usually, it begins with a slick website and ends with a “Request a Quote” button, a barrier that often means your details are about to be fed into a high-pressure sales funnel.

We think it says something about how good POS software might be if the price is not easily accessible, if they have sales people in place as gatekeepers.

At Tower Systems, we believe that if you are transparent about how you help a business, you should be equally transparent about what it costs. Our POS software pricing is transparent.

Why transparency matters

For a small business retailer, “hidden costs” can be a threat to cash flow. When pricing is tucked away behind sales calls, it’s difficult to perform a genuine side-by-side comparison. You find yourself wondering if you’re being quoted the same rate as the shop down the road, or if there are “success fees,” “exit fees,” or “integration levies” waiting in the fine print.

We’ve always felt that if we can’t tell you the price upfront, we aren’t respecting your time. Our pricing is public because we want you to have all the facts before we even have our first conversation.

The Tower Systems approach: No lock-ins, no surprises

Retail is unpredictable. The last few years have taught us that flexibility is a necessity, not a luxury. That is why our software is available on a simple monthly rental basis.

  • No long-term contracts: We don’t believe in “lock-in” periods. If the software isn’t serving your business, you should be able to walk away.

  • Unlimited terminals: Many providers charge “per lane” or “per device.” We don’t. Our pricing is per location, meaning you can add an extra counter during the Christmas rush without your monthly bill spiking.

  • What you see is what you get: Whether you choose our Standard, Advanced, or Ultimate plans, the inclusions are clear—from our Australian-based help desk support to software updates and Xero integration.

Here at Tower Systems we don’t charge a fee based on each sale you make. Some software companies hire this as a payments gateway charge. With us, choose the payments gateway that best serves your needs.

Beyond the price tag

While transparency starts with the cost, it extends to the partnership. When you look at our pricing page, you aren’t just looking at a subscription fee; you’re looking at a commitment to local support.

Our team is based in Australia. When you call, you speak to someone who understands the local retail landscape, GST requirements, seasonal peaks, and te specific needs of niche industries like jewellers, bike shops, produce businesses, newsagencies, garden centres, and pet stores.

Control is back in your hands

Choosing a POS system is one of the most significant decisions a retailer can make. It’s the engine room of your business. By being open about our costs, we hope to make that decision a little less daunting.

We encourage you to compare us. Take our pricing, look at our features, and put them next to any other provider. We’re confident in what we offer, and we believe that a relationship built on honesty from day one is the only way to help a small business truly thrive.

Exploring an alternatives to Lightspeed software for retailers: Why freedom of choice matters

E

We are grateful to the retailers who have switched from Lightspeed Commerce POS software to our Tower Systems POS software. Enquiries have increased, for which we are also grateful.  Many of these conversations stem from a common point of friction: a shift in how some software providers are structuring their fees and payment processing requirements.

At Tower Systems, we believe in transparency – see our approach to pricing for a good example of this. To be clear, we have never used Lightspeed ourselves, and we don’t spend our time dissecting their code. We can’t offer a feature-by-feature technical breakdown of their software versus ours. However, we can speak to the fundamental differences in business philosophy, and how those differences can impact the bottom line of an independent retail business.

If you are currently using Lightspeed POS software in your shop and evaluating your POS options, here is what we believe sets Tower Systems apart as a viable alternative.

1. Payment independence vs. transaction fees

The most significant feedback we hear from Lightspeed users relates to “Lightspeed Payments.” By integrating their own payment platform, the software provider takes a percentage of every sale you make.

Tower systems has offered POS software integrated payments for close to 20 years. BUT, with us you can choose the payments platform that best suits your needs.

From our perspective, your POS provider shouldn’t be a “silent partner” in your revenue. We view a per-transaction fee as a tax on your growth—the more successful you become, the more you pay them.

  • The Tower Approach: We have no requirement regarding which payment platform you use. You are free to negotiate the best possible rate with your bank or any third-party provider (we’ve seen customers secure rates at 1% or lower). We don’t take a cut of your sales. We believe our job is to develop great software, not to clip the ticket on your hard-earned turnover.

2. Built for the specialist, not the “Big Box”

Lightspeed has publicly stated they target businesses with significant annual turnovers (often cited around US$500,000). Their trajectory suggests a focus on larger entities and franchise networks.

At Tower Systems, our focus remains exactly where it started: local, independent specialty retailers. We serve niche markets like:

  • Jewellers and Gift Shops

  • Garden Centres and Produce stores

  • Bike, Fishing, and Outdoor shops

  • Toy and Hobby stores

  • Pet shops and Firearms dealers

We don’t chase massive corporate contracts. Because we don’t prioritise “big” business, every customer, no matter their size, has an equal voice in our software enhancement process.

3. Local support, human connection

In an era of automated tickets and overseas call centres, we remain committed to human-to-human contact. Tower Systems develops its software locally in Australia and New Zealand, and our support team is based here too.

When you call us, you speak to a person who understands the local retail landscape. We also operate a transparent enhancement process where every customer gets to vote on future software updates. Your feedback directly shapes the tools you use every day.

Is Tower Systems right for you?

We aren’t here to tell you that we are the only choice. Let’s talk, find out what matters to you and see whether what we offer is a viable solution. No pressure from us. If you use Lightspeed today, let us know what you love and what you’re not a fan of. We can see how we step up to each of these.

If our solution isn’t the right fit for your specific operational needs, we will tell you so. But if you are looking for a system that offers flexibility, local accountability, and a predictable cost of ownership, we would love to chat.

Would you like to see how we compare to Lightspeed? Contact us for a no-obligation demonstration. You can reach the team on 1300 662 957 or via email at sales@towersystems.com.au.

This season, we’re using our social spaces to say thank you to everyone supporting their community. To the retailers sharing our “thank you” graphics—thank you for keeping the conversation positive!

Beware the hype. For some companies, AI is a buzzword being pushed by marketing while for other companies it is functionality driven, from deep within their products. The same is true with Agentic AI.

If you’ve been following the latest tech news, you’ve likely heard the term “Agentic AI” thrown around. It’s a buzzword attracting millions in marketing spend from the world’s biggest tech companies. But for a local small business retailer, buzzwords don’t pay the rent. Practical tools do.

Here at Tower Systems, a POS software company focussed on local independent retailers, we believe the true value of AI isn’t in the hype; it’s in the hours saved,  mistakes avoided, money making decisions made. We aren’t just talking about what AI might do in 2030. We are delivering Agentic AI and practical AI tools to independent retailers across Australia and New Zealand today.

What is Agentic AI? here’s a definition we like, Agentic AI takes autonomous, goal-oriented action. It eliminates the multiple human steps usually required to achieve an outcome.

The best example of this is our new Auto Order facility. Previously, keeping your shelves stocked involved running a report, analysing the data, identifying suppliers, creating orders, and then manually sending them. It was a time-consuming process often prone to human error or delay.

With our Agentic AI approach, you can now set a “forecast order” rule, for instance, instructing the system to always maintain three weeks’ worth of stock based on the last 12 weeks of sales data. You set it and forget it. The system automatically generates the orders in the background and notifies you when they are ready. You just review and click send. This doesn’t just save hours of admin; it ensures your top-selling items, which are often out of stock 20-25% of the time in typical retail settings—stay on the shelves, driving revenue growth.

Practical tools for the daily grind. Beyond autonomous ordering, our POS software is packed with AI tools designed to handle the heavy lifting of retail administration:

  • AI invoice import: This is a game-changer for inventory management. You can feed a PDF invoice from anysupplier into the system. The AI analyses the document, extracts stock codes, costs, and quantities, and maps them to your inventory. It even highlights new items versus existing stock. What used to take hours of manual data entry now takes minutes.

  • Smart product descriptions: struggling to write engaging copy for your website? Our integration allows you to generate professional, SEO-friendly product descriptions and blog posts directly from your stock screen. You can even remove image backgrounds instantly for a cleaner web store look.

  • Competitor price checking: In a competitive market, knowledge is power. Our tools can compare your pricing against specific local competitors (like that bookshop down the road) to give you guidance on whether your pricing is standard, promotional, or premium.

From reporting to insights. The traditional “end of day report”, a dense wall of numbers, is obsolete. Retailers are busy; they don’t have time to decipher spreadsheets. Our software does that for you.

In our Tower software we offer an AI-driven End of Shift analysis. Instead of raw figures, the system provides a written summary of the day: sales trends, staff performance, and even how the weather might have impacted foot traffic. Looking ahead, we are working on natural language reporting, where you will be able to simply ask your software, “What is my best selling item from Hunter Leisure?” and get an immediate, plain-English answer.

We eat our own dog food (sort of).  This isn’t just software theory. Mark Fletcher, the founder of Tower Systems, owns and runs a local shop in Malvern, Victoria. He’s owned and run local retail; for 30+ years. Every tool we build is tested and used in a real-world retail environment, an alpha test, prior to being tested by our wonderful beta community. We know these tools work because our early-adopters rely on them to compete against the big box stores and online giants.

The big end of town, retailers like Coles supermarkets, are rolling out enterprise-level AI. We are passionate about ensuring independent small business retailers have access to the same firepower.

If you are ready to stop typing in invoices manually and start letting the software do the work for you, let’s have a chat. The future of retail isn’t coming; it’s already here in your Point of Sale software.

How Unified Commerce From Tower Systems Saves Time and Money for Local Small Business Retailers

H

The line between “online” and “in-store” is blurred compared to what it was a year or two back.  Customers don’t see two different businesses; they see products and shops. They expect a seamless experience whether they are browsing your website on their phone at midnight or walking through your front doors at 10 AM.

For many local small business retailers, managing this can feel like a logistical nightmare. Trying to juggle a physical shop and a digital storefront using disconnected systems often leads to inventory errors, accidental overselling, and hours of tedious manual data entry.

This is where Tower Systems changes the game. By offering a true unified commerce solution, Tower Systems empowers small business retailers to connect their brick-and-mortar operations with the world’s leading e-commerce platforms seamlessly.

Now, unified commerce is an overworked marketing term. For us, though, it’s real. We here at Tower Systems deliver on unified commerce for small business retailers.

What is “Unified Commerce”

“Unified commerce” is a marketing term used to describe the marriage of different tech solutions. It’s a good term, we like it. It describes the act of bringing your business operations together into a single, easy-to-manage view. It moves past simply having a website (multi-channel) to having a website that actually talks to your shop counter. This is why we use the term; it makes sense for the clarity and peace of mind we offer.

The Power of Connection: Seamless Integrations

The Tower Systems POS software is designed to be the “single source of truth” for your business. It bridges the gap between your physical inventory and your digital storefront through robust integrations with the industry giants:

  • Shopify: As a certified Shopify Partner, our specific Retailer to Shopify Link allows for real-time synchronisation of stock levels, product descriptions, images, and pricing. It handles complex data structures easily, such as colour, size, and style variants, and supports “Click and Collect” workflows. This ensures your online customers can only buy what you actually have sitting on the shelf.

  • WooCommerce: For retailers who prefer the flexibility of WordPress, our Tower Web Connect platform acts as a powerful intermediary. It syncs products, web prices, and images directly to your WooCommerce store while downloading sales data back into your POS to adjust stock levels instantly.

  • BigCommerce & Magento: Whether you are scaling up with BigCommerce or running a complex custom setup on Magento, Tower Systems offers direct links that eliminate the need for double-handling data.

Why This Matters for Your Bottom Line

Transitioning from simple multi-channel retail to Unified Commerce with Tower Systems delivers immediate operational benefits that save you time and protect your reputation.

The most significant benefit is the elimination of overselling. When a unified system manages your inventory, a sale made at the counter immediately deducts stock from your website. You can rest easy knowing you will never have to make that awkward phone call to an online customer explaining that the item they just purchased is actually out of stock.

Furthermore, you reclaim hours of your week previously lost to admin. There is no need to upload CSV files or manually update prices online. You change a price or add a product in your POS, and it updates online automatically.

Ready to Unify Your Business?

Tower Systems provides the infrastructure you need to succeed in a unified commerce world, backed by local support for Australian retailers.

Tower Systems helps retailers with auto inventory fulfilment

T

The work we have undertaken with retailers and suppliers regarding the automated fulfilment of inventory using our POS software has consistently demonstrated its ability to save both time and money. Automated inventory fulfilment increases retail sales, creating a mutually beneficial scenario for the connected local retailer and their partner supplier.

At the foundation of this relationship is capable POS software – like we offer here at Tower Systems. This is a functionality we have developed over many years, and it continues to be enhanced as new needs emerge within this context.

Auto inventory fulfilment is straightforward. Sales data flows from the local retail business to the partner supplier. Once inventory in the store reaches a specific trigger point, the supplier initiates fulfilment based on agreed rules and processes.

This approach is particularly effective when a supplier provides a wide range of products. It allows the ordering needs for various items to be grouped together, resulting in a more efficient delivery process.

Transparency and privacy are both maintained. The retailer can view the sales data in their POS software, just as the supplier can within their IT systems. Crucially, no data is shared regarding products related to any other supplier.

Auto inventory fulfilment allows businesses to leverage just in time opportunities. This reduces the inventory investment required by the local small business retailer while saving physical space and administration time. Furthermore, it assists the supplier with supply management and manufacturing planning if they produce what they sell.

The key drivers here are the efficiency of space, capital and labour. With POS software at the heart of the process, everyone involved benefits.

Auto inventory fulfilment facilitated through POS software brings an innovation to local small business retailers that major retailers have utilised for many years.

Tower Systems is grateful to offer specialised retail POS software tailored for this level of connectivity. We support a diverse range of sectors including garden centres, sewing shops, music shops, pool maintenance and supply businesses, produce businesses, fishing bait and tackle businesses, firearms dealers, newsagents, pet shops, adult shops, bookshops, jewellers and toy shops.

Our customers are local family run businesses across Australia and New Zealand.

Unlock Constant Revenue: How to Automate Recurring Billing with Tower Systems

U

In retail, a guaranteed sale is the best kind of sale. Whether it’s a monthly subscription box, a service fee, or a repeat consumables order, recurring revenue provides stability for your business.

Managing repeat orders manually can be a headache. Chasing payments, remembering to generate invoices – it takes time.

That is why we are excited to highlight the Recurring Invoices facility in our Tower Systems POS software. We built this working with customers who already offered recurring billing services in their businesses. It’s been made for small business retail, specialty retail.

This module allows you to “set and forget” regular transactions, turning your Point of Sale into an automated revenue generator.

What can you use Recurring Billing for?

Here are a few ways our customers can use our recurring billing facilities:

  • Subscription boxes: Run a monthly curated hamper or beauty box? Automate the billing.

  • Pet supplies: Offer a “subscribe and save” service for heavy bags of pet food to ensure your customers never run out (and never shop elsewhere). We know from our work with pet stores that shopper purchasing is predictable.

  • Services: Bill automatically for pool cleaning, garden maintenance, or software subscriptions – thinks that are done, services that you provide, on a regular or cyclical basis.

  • Storage fees: Perfect for businesses that store items for customers, such as firearms storage or tool storage.

Key Features that Save time

1. Flexible schedules. You are in control of the frequency. You can set invoices to trigger Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly. You can set them to run indefinitely (“Ongoing”) or set a specific End Date for fixed-term contracts.

2. Smart pricing options. This is one of the smartest features of the module. When setting up an invoice, you can choose between two pricing methods:

  • Set price: Great for fixed service fees (e.g., $50/month).

  • Retail price: If you are selling a product (like dog food) and the retail price goes up in your system, the Recurring Invoice will automatically update to the new price for the next billing cycle. You don’t have to manually edit dozens of customer accounts when prices change.

3. Automated communication. With the correct settings (Retailer 3.4.3+), you don’t even need to print and mail the receipt. The system can be configured to email the invoice automatically to the customer the moment the charge is processed.

4. Inventory awareness Worried about selling stock you don’t have? You can toggle settings to check your “Quantity on Hand.” You can choose to process the invoice regardless of stock levels, or have the system halt the invoice and notify you if the item is out of stock.

How it works

Once activated, the system works in the background. Within 30 minutes of your chosen “Invoice Generation Time,” Retailer checks for due accounts and processes them.

If your shop is closed or the computer is off on the due date, don’t worry. The system is smart enough to retroactively generate the invoice the next time you turn the computer on, ensuring you never miss a payment.

Getting started

Setting this up is easy. The Recurring Invoices module is likely already waiting for you in your software.

  1. Go to Customers -> Recurring Invoices.

  2. Click New Recurring Invoice.

  3. Select your customer, set the schedule, scan your items, and click Save.

Note: For Newsagencies handling newspapers and magazines, we recommend using the specific “Customer Orders” facility rather than Recurring Invoices.

The recurring revenue facilities in our POS software came out of a request from customers. We developed the facilities after thorough consultation and are grateful to customers for engaging with testing, to ensure that what we delivered was a real and useful solution. That’s how we evolve our software – working closely with our customers.

We are grateful to all who contributed to our recurring billing solution.

If you’re a Tower Systems customer and want to start building a subscription model for your business, check the Help menu in your software for “Recurring Invoices” to ensure the module is ticked in your registration, or contact Tower Support for assistance in getting started!

How Tower Systems POS is helps local Asian supermarkets thrive

H

Running a local Asian or international supermarket comes with a unique set of challenges that standard retail software often misses. From handling loose spices and bulk rice sacks to managing imported goods and community-based pricing, the needs of your store are specific.

In a recent chat with Paul, one of Tower Systems’ expert software installers, we dove deep into how their Aussie-made POS software is specifically designed to support the workflow of independent Asian grocers in Australia and New Zealand.

Paul is one of our experts. he’s installed the software in this type of businesses, configured it with them, and helped them to make the most of the opportunity.

Here is a breakdown of the game-changing features that can help streamline your business.

1. Seamless scale integration (NMI Authorized)

One of the biggest pain points in Asian grocery is managing loose stock like herbs, spices, and fresh produce.

  • Tower Systems software integrates directly with your scales. You simply place the item on the scale, press the product button on the POS screen, and the weight and price automatically transfer to the sale.

  • It’s faster, reduces manual entry errors, and is fully NMI (National Measurement Institute) authorized, ensuring you meet government trade standards.

2. Visual Touchscreen Buttons

Speed at the counter is critical. Paul highlighted how the software allows for highly visual, customizable buttons.

  • Instead of reading through text lists, your staff can use photo-based buttons. For example, a “Spice” button can open a sub-menu of images showing turmeric, cumin, or chilli powder.

  • This is incredibly helpful for new staff or employees where English might be a second language, making the system intuitive and easy to learn.

3. Handling Bulk Breakdowns (“Manufactured Goods”)

Many Asian supermarkets buy in bulk—think 20kg bags of flour or rice—and repackage them into 1kg or 2kg bags for retail.

  • The “Manufactured Goods” feature tracks this inventory shift. When you break down a big sack, the software automatically adjusts your stock levels, knowing that one large item has become twenty small ones.

4. Smart Currency & Import Management

Dealing with imported goods often means juggling exchange rates.

  • When stock arrives, you can input the cost in the foreign currency (e.g., buying in USD or RMB), and the system helps convert it to your current local selling price, ensuring your margins stay accurate.

  • You can even set up automatic prompts (for staff) or receipt notes (for customers) regarding storage instructions for specific imported items.

5. Community & Loyalty Features

Community is the heart of local grocers. The software allows you to set up:

  • Easily apply discounts for local community groups, restaurants, or loyal VIPs automatically when their name is attached to the sale.

  • During festivals like Lunar New Year or Diwali, you can bundle items into hampers. The system tracks the individual stock items within the hamper, so your inventory is always right.

6. Flexibility for the Real World

Paul mentioned several “quality of life” features that make a big difference during a busy rush:

  • Suspend Sales: If a customer forgets an item, you can pause their transaction, serve the next person, and retrieve the original sale instantly without re-scanning.

  • Fractional Quantities: Easily sell items by 0.5kg or other fractions without complex math.

  • Training: Tower Systems offers “snackable” training videos and a chatbot that can support staff in multiple languages, bridging the communication gap.

Tower Systems isn’t chasing the big chains. They are focused on helping independent local retailers—businesses with 1 to 5 stores—compete and grow. If you are running an Asian supermarket and need a system that actually understands how you trade, this Aussie-made solution is worth a look.

We are grateful to be part of Constellation Software

W

Just over a year ago, Tower Systems was acquired by Vela APX, part of the Constellation Software group. It’s been a terrific first year under new ownership. What we hoped for pre-acquisition has been our experience.

Mark Fletcher, founder of Tower Systems commented: “I am grateful to have found a happy and strong home for the Tower Systems community of team members and customers and to have done this at a time of my choosing. I am also thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve the business as it evolves in its service of local independent small businesses. Our mission remains: to help local indie retailers thrive.”

Mark is still with the business, and loving it.

Tower customers have noticed minimal change. Our focus on local small retail businesses remains.

In the last year we have delivered awesome POS software updates, hosted many customer meetings, handled thousand of customer support and advice calls, released new training materials and helped with plenty of suppliers serving our retailers.

It’s been a business and good year, just as it was planned to be prior to the sale of the business.

As part of a larger family we have more people we can call on for advice and more shoulders to lean on if we need.

Gavin Williams, General Manager of Tower Systems, expressed excitement about joining the Vela Software Group, “We’re excited to join the Vela Software Group, a move that builds on the dedication and talent of our team. This partnership will help us grow, innovate, and continue providing practical solutions that make a real difference for the Retail businesses we are proud to serve.”

Gavin leads the business today, guiding it daily.

Mark Schmutter, Group Director at Vela APX, echoed this sentiment in saying “We are thrilled to welcome Gavin, Mark and the Tower Systems team to the Vela Group. Their expertise in providing real solutions for independent retailers helps to strengthen our position in these markets both in Australia/New Zealand and with our other business unit servicing similar customers in the UK. Tower’s agility, innovation and flexibility, combined with Vela’s network of expertise and resources, will allow them to thrive and continue evolving with their customers.”

Mark and others at vela saw the value in the Tower business, for which we are grateful.

This post today is not to brag. Rather, it’s a note that a year on we’re settled, happy and having a terrific time serving our small business retail customers and being part of the Vela APX works. We are excited to see what 2026 brings.

Lotterywest integration from Tower Systems newsagency software helps WA newsagents save time, cut mistakes

L

Newsagents in Western Australia are loving the integration Tower Systems released two months ago between its newsagency software and Lotterywest.

With this integration, Lotterywest retailers using the Tower Systems software can scan a Lotterywest ticket they have printed for a customer and the sale automatically comes up on their Tower POS software. This saves time and cuts mistakes.

It’s another terrific step toward improved efficiency for Lotterywest retailers using the newsagency industry standard software from Tower Systems. This integration has been delivered by Tower Systems to its newsagency software customers without additional cost. We have also delivered an integration with The Lottery Corporation (TheLott) terminals for newsagents outside of Western Australia.

Here is the announcement sent by Lotterywest to retailers two months ago:

From Wednesday 22 October, a new internationally recognised EAN13 Price Embedded Barcode will replace the existing price barcodes on Lotto tickets and receipts. Retailers using TOWER and POS Browser systems will now be able to scan Lotto tickets directly into their POS terminal.

What are the benefits?

More than just easier scanning, the new barcode also allows you to scan payouts, cancellations, and other receipts. Scan individual tickets to view game-level sales or use the summary ticket for a quick snapshot of store performance. There is no change to activating Scratch’n’Win tickets, however Scratch’n’Win payouts can now be scanned. In addition, enhanced transaction history is now available on the Photon screen, giving you greater sales visibility and making reconciliation more efficient.

The move is already streamlining lottery ticket selling for WA retailers, and we are grateful to have helped with this.

Tower Systems is grateful to offer WA newsagents access to the Lotterywest integration. If you’re in WA and are a Tower Systems customer, click here for the advice on being ready for the launch by Lotterywest on October 22. Lotterywest sent an email to WA newsagents today. This brings WA newsagents closer to what other stated and territories have had for a while now. Tower has funded this work on behalf of newsagents.

Also in the Tower newsagency software are awesome integrated AI tools that are helping newsagents make big changes including cutting labour costs and making better quality decisions faster. These are the most advanced AI tools in newsagency software right now.

With the successful rollout of the Lotterywest integration, funded by Tower Systems on behalf of its customers, and the concurrent delivery of the TheLott integration for retailers outside WA, Tower Systems continues to cement its commitment to driving newsagency efficiency nationwide. This focus on streamlining core retail operations is further complemented by the inclusion of market-leading, integrated AI tools within the Tower newsagency software, positioning it as the most advanced POS solution for local small business retailers seeking to reduce labor costs and make faster, better-quality business decisions.
