Small business retail advice: How to optimise your Google Business Profile for better search visibility

S

Here we share updated advice on ensuring your Google Business Profile is working well for you. This is advice for local small business retailers.

Google Business Profile content is a key data feed used by artificial intelligence to produce search results.

For local independent retailers, maintaining an accurate and active profile is no longer optional. It is a core component of your digital presence. To ensure your business remains visible and trusted by both search engines and potential customers, follow these essential steps to keep your profile up to date.

Prioritise accurate core information

A critical element of your profile is the reliability of your basic data. Search engines penalise inconsistency, so your shop name, address, and phone number must be identical to the details on your website and social media platforms.

Pay close attention to your trading hours. Standard operating hours should always be current. If you are closing for a public holiday or a local event, utilise the Special Hours feature. This removes the “Hours may differ” warning on your listing. That small warning can create enough doubt to send a customer to a competitor instead.

Use authentic visuals

High-quality, authentic visuals help customers understand what to expect when they visit. You should aim to upload at least one or two new photos every fortnight. These do not need to be professional studio shots. Clear, well-lit images of new stock arrivals, fresh window displays, or your storefront are highly effective.

Avoid using generic stock photography. Customers value authenticity and want to see the real environment of your shop. Real photos perform significantly better in engagement metrics and help Google verify that your business is active.

Engage with customer feedback

A proactive approach to feedback demonstrates that you value your customers and take your service seriously. Make it a habit to reply to all reviews, whether they are positive or negative.

When responding to a less-than-perfect review, maintain a calm and professional tone. Focus on being solution-oriented. A measured, professional response often carries more weight with future customers than the original complaint itself.

Share regular updates

Google allows you to share updates directly on your profile through the Posts feature. These function similarly to a social media feed but are visible to people specifically searching for your services. Use these posts to announce new product launches, in-store events, or community initiatives. Always include a call-to-action button, such as “Learn More” or “Call Now,” to make the customer’s next step as simple as possible.

Customise your business attributes

Google frequently introduces new attributes that help customers filter their searches. Ensure you have selected every relevant option for your business. Common attributes include identifying as a small business, offering a wheelchair-accessible entrance, or providing in-store pickup and click-and-collect services. These details help your business appear in specific, high-intent searches.

By consistently managing these five areas, you provide the AI-driven search engines with the high-quality data they need to recommend your business to local shoppers.
