The Human Cost of Transactional Pricing in Indie Retail

T

Local independent retail is built on a foundation of genuine relationships, not merely the accumulation of transactions. This core truth is often overlooked by software companies, particularly those employing a percentage-based pricing model for their Point of Sale (POS) systems. Such an approach can feel less like a partnership and more like a regressive tax, revealing a significant disconnect with the operational realities and philosophical heart of indie retail.

Tower Systems does not charge a per transaction cost, a tax, for use of its POS software.

Consider the typical independent shop. It is often staffed by casual employees who might work only one or two shifts a week. These individuals are the frontline ambassadors for the brand. They are not technology specialists. Their priority is the customer standing directly in front of them. When a question arises, they need immediate, accurate answers. They require intuitive software that facilitates service, rather than hindering it. A delay caused by a cumbersome interface or a confusing error message directly impacts the customer experience. This is where the personal touch, the very essence of indie retail, can be eroded.

Large technology companies, in their pursuit of efficiency and scale, frequently focus on metrics such as “low cost per contact” for their support systems. This often translates into automated responses, lengthy wait times, or complex multi-tiered support structures. While these strategies might reduce operational costs for the tech provider, they exact a heavy toll on the independent retailer. A casual staff member, faced with a queue of customers and an unyielding automated system, experiences frustration that can quickly transfer to the customer. This impersonal approach clashes directly with the deeply personal nature of local retail.

The percentage-of-transaction pricing model exacerbates this issue. Every sale in an independent shop represents not just revenue, but the successful culmination of a relationship. It is the result of curated stock, personalised recommendations, and a welcoming atmosphere. When a software company takes a slice of each transaction, it implicitly claims a share in this relational success without contributing directly to its creation. This model can feel like a penalty for growth. As a business flourishes through its own hard work and community engagement, its core software costs increase disproportionately.

Furthermore, this pricing structure introduces unwelcome unpredictability into a sector that often operates on tight margins. Independent retailers require stable, forecastable overheads to manage their cash flow effectively. A fixed subscription fee allows for clearer financial planning. A variable cost tied to every sale, however, can turn software from a predictable utility into an erratic expense, making budgeting more challenging. It also creates a misaligned incentive, where the software provider benefits from increased volume regardless of the actual value or strain placed on their service by that volume.

Ultimately, the most effective POS software for independent retail should operate as a supportive, almost invisible, infrastructure. It should empower the person behind the counter, making their job easier and allowing them to focus on what truly matters: the customer. When pricing models become punitive or create friction, they cease to be tools for empowerment and instead become barriers to genuine connection. It is time for the technology supporting indie retail to truly understand and uphold the personal essence of the retail experience.

Beyond the Obituary: Why the Media Gets the Newsagency Story Wrong

B

A recent ABC Gippsland report on the closure of the Sale Authorised Newsagency highlights a frustrating trend in national journalism. When a long-serving newsagent retires, the media often frames the story as an obituary for the entire industry. By focusing on a single closure in Gippsland, the ABC has once again demonstrated poor editorial judgement, failing to report on the newsagencies currently experiencing double-digit growth.

The story in Sale is one of personal transition, not industry collapse. Terry Stewart is closing his doors after 38 years because he is ready to retire, not because the business failed. He noted that the industry has been “really good” to him. Yet, the media narrative persists in “talking down” the channel, ignoring the reality of the 1,800+ newsagents Tower Systems serves, many of whom are thriving.

There is a significant “tell” in the ABC’s reporting. The article mentions that the products in the Sale newsagency had not changed much over the decades. In the modern retail landscape, this is the exception, not the rule. Among the most successful newsagents in the Tower Systems community, much of what they sell today is entirely different from their inventory a decade ago. from the ABC story, Sale appeared to not have changed.

Success today is driven by aggressive diversification. Thriving newsagents have moved far beyond the “agent” model. They are now destinations for high-margin giftware, collectible toys, specialized stationery, and unique home décor. These businesses are using data-driven insights to pivot their stock mix, meeting the demands of a new generation of shoppers.

By focusing on a business that remained largely static, the ABC provides a skewed and inaccurate view of the industry’s health. They overlook the innovators who are breaking sales records and revitalising their local high streets. The newsagency channel is not disappearing; it is being redefined by those willing to evolve their product mix and embrace modern retail strategies.

At Tower Systems, we see good stories every day. We see the growth, the reinvestment, and the success stories that the national broadcaster chooses to ignore. While we acknowledge the end of a long career for a newsagent like Terry, we refuse to accept a narrative of decline. The newsagency of the future is here, it is profitable, and it is vastly different from the one the media prefers to profile.

We are grateful to serve Australian newsagents.

Making Advanced Technology Accessible for Small Business Success Through POS Software

M

In a rapidly evolving retail landscape, many small business owners feel overwhelmed by the fast pace of technological change. It’s common, and it’s okay.

At Tower Systems, we understand that software and artificial intelligence can seem daunting, especially when the inner workings are unfamiliar. However, our goal is to bridge this gap, transforming complex tools into practical assets that empower independent retailers to thrive alongside larger competitors.

A Personal Approach to Technology

We believe that no business should be forced to adopt technology before they are ready. Every retailer must move at a pace that suits their specific needs and comfort level. Our role is to provide clear, plain-English explanations that demystify how point-of-sale systems and AI function in a real-world setting.

By using actual business data, we demonstrate the tangible benefits of these tools, making them accessible even to those who do not consider themselves technically minded. Whether you are a seasoned retailer in your eighties or a young entrepreneur starting out, our resources are designed to ensure you can master the software with confidence.

Comprehensive Support and Training

A significant part of making technology accessible is providing the right support structure. We offer a variety of training materials, including:

  • Extensive Online Resources: A wealth of information is available at any time to help you navigate the system.
  • Instructional Videos: Visual guides provide step-by-step walkthroughs of key features.
  • Human-Based Customer Service: Our team is dedicated to providing patient, ongoing assistance for as long as you need it.

Our commitment to training has no set time limit; we are here to support your learning journey until you feel completely comfortable managing your digital tools.

Competing on a Level Playing Field

The ultimate purpose of integrating AI and advanced software is to provide independent shops with the same advantages enjoyed by big-box retailers. Our AI tools are developed to deliver reliable, useful results that build confidence and drive more successful business outcomes.

By making these high-level tools accessible to local, family-owned businesses, we help create a more balanced retail environment. Technology should not be a barrier to success, but a catalyst for it. If you have been hesitant about the digital future, we are ready to partner with you to make that transition smooth, practical, and rewarding.

POS Software Solutions Tailored for Fabric, Sewing and Haberdashery Retailers

P

Independent fabric, sewing, and haberdashery stores occupy a unique niche in the retail landscape. These businesses are often family-owned and deeply rooted in their local communities, serving a dedicated group of makers and hobbyists. Managing such a specialised inventory, ranging from high-value sewing machines to items sold by length or weight, requires more than a generic point-of-sale system. Tower Systems has developed a software solution specifically designed to address these distinct operational needs.

We are proud of our POS software for sewing, fabric and haberdashery shops.

Managing Diverse Inventory with Precision

A challenge for haberdashery retailers is the variety of ways products are sold. Fabric is often measured by the metre, while certain craft supplies might be sold by weight. Our software facilitates these transactions seamlessly, ensuring accurate pricing and stock levels regardless of the unit of measure.

You can sell by product code, barcode or do an easy lookup.

For businesses selling high-end equipment like sewing machines, which can range significantly in price, tracking individual units is essential. POS POS software includes serial number tracking to monitor high-value inventory and manage warranty information effectively. Furthermore, the software can track repairs and servicing for customer machines, providing a comprehensive history of maintenance for each unit.

Supporting the Maker Community

Specialty craft stores are often the hub for local sewing clubs and community groups. Our software includes tools to support these relationships, such as managing member discounts and facilitating fundraising efforts for community organisations.

Special orders are another common requirement in this sector. When a customer requires a specific pattern or a particular fabric not currently in stock, the system tracks the order from the initial request through to arrival. This ensures that staff are alerted immediately when the item is ready for collection, enhancing the customer experience.

Integrated Business Operations

In today’s retail environment, an online presence is vital. The Tower Systems point-of-sale software connects directly to Shopify, allowing retailers to sync their physical and digital storefronts. This integration ensures that stock levels remain accurate across all channels.

Beyond inventory management, the software links with essential business tools like Xero for accounting, Deputy for staff scheduling, and various loyalty tools designed for infrequent shop visits. The rental of specialised equipment can also be managed through a recurring billing feature.

Comprehensive Support for Independent Retailers

We are committed to supporting local, independent businesses. Our software license includes installation on an unlimited number of computers within the store, providing flexibility as the business grows.

Retailers have access to a robust help desk, an extensive multilingual knowledge base, and after-hours support for urgent system queries. By providing tools specifically built for the fabric and haberdashery trade, we help independent owners focus on what they do best: serving their community of makers.

Bridging the Gap: Advice For Small Business Retailers On Integrating Your Physical Store with a Seamless Online Presence

B

For a local specialty retailer, transitioning into eCommerce can feel like an overwhelming hurdle. It is no longer enough to simply have a website; modern retail requires a digital presence that works in lockstep with in-store operations. Achieving this synergy requires a partner who understands the complexities of inventory management, margin control, and the unique needs of the Australian retail landscape.

It’s risky. Web development is unregulated and there are people out there scamming business owners. Take your time. be careful.

Based in Hawthorn, Victoria, Tower Systems provides a specialised Shopify development service designed specifically for independent retailers. Whether you manage a newsagency, a garden centre, a toy store, or a boutique, the goal is to create a professional digital storefront that is fully integrated with your point-of-sale software.

The value of local expertise

A significant challenge in the current market is the prevalence of web development firms that outsource their work. While these options may appear cost-effective initially, they often result in cultural gaps or technical solutions that are not tuned to the Australian market.

The development work at Tower Systems is performed entirely in-house by a team based in Melbourne. This ensures clear communication and a deep understanding of local consumer behaviour. By keeping the process local, the focus remains on quality and commercial effectiveness. You work directly with people who are personally invested in the success of your business.

A transparent, fixed-price approach

Transparency is vital when investing in technology. To remove the guesswork, the service is offered on a fixed-price basis. This means the costs are clearly defined from the outset, allowing you to plan your budget with confidence. The process begins with a comprehensive consultation to scope your requirements and ensure the solution is a genuine fit for your needs.

This service is structured to empower retailers rather than to profit from the build itself. The standard package includes the selection of a premium Shopify theme, full POS integration for seamless data transfer, and a personal two-hour training session. To ensure a smooth transition, the service also includes three months of post-launch support and a detailed handover guide for ongoing management.

Practical steps for eCommerce success

Launching a successful Shopify store requires more than just technical setup; it requires a retail-first strategy. Here are several principles to guide your journey:

Define your primary goal: Determine if your focus is on attracting new customers, growing total revenue, or providing better service to your existing local base. This clarity will dictate your design and marketing decisions.

Curate your inventory: You do not need to list every item from your physical shop online. Start with a curated selection of best-sellers or unique products to make the site easier for customers to navigate.

Prioritise original content: Search engines reward unique descriptions and images. Avoid generic supplier content and instead write your own titles and descriptions that reflect your brand’s voice.

Simplify logistics: Start with a straightforward, flat-rate shipping structure. You can introduce more complex freight options once you understand your online customers’ buying habits.

A website is a living asset that requires regular attention through social media engagement and customer emails. By partnering with a local team that understands both the software and the strategy, you can build a digital storefront that truly supports your long-term growth.

Listening to the Front Line: How Customer Ideas Drive Our Software Development

L

POS software should not be a static tool. As the retail landscape shifts, the technology you use to manage your business must evolve alongside it. At Tower Systems, we believe the best insights for this evolution come directly from the people using our point-of-sale software every day in their shops.

For 16+ years, we have maintained a dedicated platform called Software Ideas for our POS software customers. This facility is a core part of our development cycle, providing every customer with a direct line to our development team. It is a transparent, collaborative space where the future of our software is shaped by those who understand the practical needs of retail best.

A Transparent Process for Real-World Solutions

The concept is straightforward: any Tower Systems customer can submit a suggestion for a software enhancement. Once a suggestion is posted, it becomes visible to our entire user community. Other retailers can then view these ideas and cast their votes for the features they find most valuable.

This process serves several vital functions:

  • Direct Feedback: It provides us with a clear, data-driven resource to consult when planning our next software updates.
  • Prioritisation: Voting helps us identify which enhancements will have the most significant positive impact on the broadest range of businesses.
  • Community Knowledge: Sometimes, a user might suggest a feature that already exists. In these cases, our software development manager provides feedback to show the user where to find that specific tool.
  • Refinement: If an idea is new but needs more detail, we engage in a two-way conversation with the retailer to fine-tune the concept before it moves toward development.

Innovation Through Collaboration

Every update we release includes enhancements that originated from our customers. We take pride in this collaborative approach and make it a point to credit the retailers behind these ideas in our update notes. It is our way of saying thank you for helping us build a more robust and effective tool.

We believe this level of openness creates certainty. Our customers know their voices are heard and that they have a genuine stake in the tools they rely on to run their businesses. If you find that your current software provider is not listening to your needs or providing a way for you to influence the product’s direction, it may be time to consider a different approach.

Good point-of-sale software must be agile. By listening to the retailers on the front line, we ensure that Tower Systems remains a practical, evolving, and human-centred solution for the modern retail environment.

Free small business retail advice on how to attract more online shoppers in 2026

F

In early 2026, Google Search has undergone a paradigm shift that many calling the “Age of Authenticity.” It’s a fundamental defence against the flood of AI-generated content that has saturated the web.

This important and welcome shift by Google is an opportunity for retailers prepared to do the work to build a moat around their business, and attract new customers. We see it as an opportunity for local small business retailers especially.

Here is advice we provided to our tower Systems customers:

Writing blog posts that drive online in 2026

Blog posts are the best value digital marketing tool for small retailers in 2026. While some argue that AI summaries reduce website visits, the true goal for most businesses is conversion rather than mere traffic. High-quality blog content improves search engine rankings and influences the responses generated by AI models. I say this because it works for me.

Choosing the right topics

I see businesses make two common mistakes when selecting blog topics. Some write only what they believe is important without considering what customers actually search for. Others focus too much on high search volumes and ignore the specific terms used by people ready to make a purchase.

To be effective, focus on niche-specific keywords. These are the terms large language models often cite. These topics can serve as templates for a wide range of content.

High-performance blog templates

Several formats consistently drive engagement and conversions:

  • Selection guides: Use titles like “How to choose the best [product] for [specific use]”. This provides value without appearing spammy.
  • Cost analysis: Discussing the “Cost of [product] for [use case]” allows you to explain your pricing and why the cheapest option may not be the best choice.
  • Competitor alternatives: Listing your brand as a top alternative to a competitor can be effective if you are comfortable with the direct approach.
  • Problem-solving: Write about how to solve a specific problem that your product or service addresses.
    Ensuring quality and brand impact

A blog post must deliver on the promise of its title. It needs to provide genuine value to the reader while explicitly recommending your brand.

While humans may rarely browse your entire blog archive, they will find individual posts through specific searches. Most blog content is now consumed by both search engines and AI models, so the writing must be clear and direct to ensure your brand is correctly represented in their results.

And, if you are not publishing regularly, you’re likely not getting the traffic you want online. Sure recommendation is 3 blog posts a week at least, 350 – 500 human written words that share your knowledge in areas noted above or similar.

Now, there’ll be some companies that say don’t worry about any of this, pay them to do it for you. Our advice is that doing that would not serve your business well. Remember, the search / AI engines will shine a light on expert knowledge. Who knows your business better – you or someone you pay to promote your business?

Retail business advice: Enhancing Retail Profitability in Challenging Times

R

When economic conditions are challenging, small business retailers generally face three choices: complain, do nothing, or implement change. Only the third option offers a genuine path toward improvement. For local small businesses, success in a tight market often depends on agility and the willingness to refine operational habits.

The following strategies are cost-effective and designed to improve cash flow and customer engagement without requiring significant capital investment.

Optimising Inventory and Space

One of the most immediate ways to improve a business is to declutter. A disorganised shop floor often mirrors a stagnant business strategy. Clearing physical space allows you to see new opportunities for product placement and improved customer flow.

This process must include a ruthless approach to “dead stock.” Whether an item has sat for six months or two years, it is currently wasting space and tying up vital cash. If you cannot sell it within a fortnight, consider donating it. Any return is better than the ongoing cost of maintaining unproductive inventory.

Furthermore, retailers must address the “out of stock” trap. Statistics show that the top 5% of selling items are frequently out of stock 21% of the time. This is guaranteed revenue lost. Using your point-of-sale data to ensure your best-sellers are always available is the simplest way to boost top-line growth.

Driving Repeat Visits and Margin

While long-term loyalty programs have their place, short-term incentives drive immediate results. Including a bounce-back voucher on receipts—valid for only seven days—encourages customers to return sooner than they originally intended.

Additionally, review your pricing structures. Many retailers stick to outdated mark-up percentages or supplier-suggested prices. Assess the convenience of your location and the local competition; you may find that your customers are willing to pay a premium for immediate availability. Small, data-driven price adjustments can significantly improve your net margin.

Enhancing the In-Store Experience

The physical environment of your shop should guide customers to spend more. This starts at the front door with a weekly display that is bright and unexpected. Inside, the atmosphere should be welcoming. Use climate control to offer a reprieve from the weather outside, and consider using scent and familiar music to create a positive sensory experience.

At the counter, focus on impulse items that provide a high yield. Move at least one product category every week to give the shop a sense of constant renewal. This ensures that even regular customers see something new during every visit.

Leveraging External Opportunities

Finally, look beyond your four walls. Engage your team by sharing goals and tracking results openly; an informed staff is a more motivated one. Reach out to suppliers to see if they have “deal prices” on inventory they are looking to move.

On the digital front, ensure your Google Business profile is current and use social media to entertain rather than just advertise. People visit these platforms to be engaged, not sold to. By showing the personality behind the business, you differentiate yourself from larger, impersonal competitors.

We get that this list represents work. As we said at the start you can complain, do nothing or take action. Only taking action can improve your situation.

We are grateful to serve thousands of local small business retailers every day.

The Human Advantage: Why Personal Service Matters in Modern Retail

T

In an era of automated phone menus and outsourced call centers, many businesses have lost sight of the human element. You have likely experienced the frustration of navigating a complex push-button system only to wait in a long queue. Perhaps you were eventually connected to an offshore agent reading from a rigid script, or forced to use an email system that does not allow for replies. This shift towards automation often creates a barrier between a business and its customers.

Retail is Inherently Personal

At Tower Systems, we believe that retail is fundamentally about people. When a customer walks into a local shop, they are looking for more than just a product. Whether they are buying a new game, a book, a piece of jewellery, or pet supplies, they have many options for where to spend their money. Often, the deciding factor in where they shop is the quality of the personal interaction they receive.

A positive retail experience is built on connection and service. Customers value the opportunity to speak with someone who understands their needs and can offer genuine advice. This human connection creates loyalty and trust, which are essential for the long-term success of any independent business.

Our Commitment to Real Interaction

We understand that our point-of-sale software customers—who are small, specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand—rely on providing excellent service to their own communities. It is only fitting that we provide that same level of care to them.

When you contact Tower Systems, you will not be met with a machine or a script. If you call us, a person will answer the phone. If you email us, a human will write back. Our team is based locally in Australia and New Zealand, ensuring they understand the specific environment in which our customers operate.

Better Support Through Conversation

True support requires active listening and a two-way dialogue. Our help desk staff do not follow rigid scripts or rely on technical jargon. Instead, they engage in a natural conversation to understand exactly what is happening in your business.

If you encounter an issue with your software, we want to know the details:

  • What were you doing when the issue occurred?
  • How did it affect your workflow?
  • What specific outcome are you looking for?

This approach treats our customers as colleagues and equals. By fostering open communication, we can provide more effective solutions that help your business thrive. We are proud of our dedicated team and their commitment to maintaining a high standard of personal service in everything we do.

Why Vertical Market POS Software is the Key to Specialty Retail Success

W

Choosing the right point of sale (POS) software is one of the most significant decisions a retail business owner can make. While generic POS systems offer a broad range of features for mass-market retail, they often lack the depth required by specialised businesses. This is where vertical market POS software becomes essential.

Generic vs. Vertical Market Software

Generic POS software is designed for broad appeal. These systems handle basic retail tasks such as scanning barcodes, processing sales, and providing standard inventory reports. While these functions are necessary, they are often insufficient for businesses with unique operational requirements.

Vertical market POS software is developed specifically for individual retail sectors. Unlike generic systems, vertical software is built to address the particular challenges and workflows of a specific industry. Tower Systems has operated as a vertical market software company for decades, initially focusing on newsagencies before expanding into various other specialty niches.

Tailored for Specialty Retail

Specialty retailers require tools that reflect the way they actually do business. For example, a garden centre has different operational needs than a jeweller or a bike shop. Vertical software “leans in” to these unique characteristics, providing features that generic systems simply do not offer.

Tower Systems provides specialised versions of its software for a wide array of businesses, including:

  • Garden centres and nurseries
  • Bike shops and toy stores
  • Pet shops and produce businesses
  • Jewellers and gift shops
  • Bookshops and newsagencies
  • Fishing, outdoor, and camping stores
  • Mobility scooter and medical equipment suppliers

Shared Needs Across Different Industries

While these industries seem diverse, they often share specific requirements that generic software overlooks. For instance, produce businesses and health food shops both need to sell items by weight or length. Firearms businesses and music instrument retailers may share complex tracking requirements. Because vertical market software is designed for these complexities, it offers a more robust solution than a “one size fits all” product.

Supporting Local Business

Vertical market software is particularly valuable for locally owned, family-run, and regional retail businesses. These businesses succeed by leveraging what makes them unique. By using software that understands their specific trade, owners can spend less time fighting with their technology and more time serving their local community.

If the goal is simply to replace a cash register and track basic sales, a generic product like Square may suffice. However, for retailers who want to leverage the unique aspects of their specialty business, vertical market software is the superior choice. This specialised approach ensures that the software evolves alongside the industry it serves.

Empowering Community Impact: Half-Price Software for Local Charity and Op-Shops

E

Charity and opportunity shops are vital to the fabric of local communities across Australia and New Zealand. Whether operated by religious organisations, animal welfare groups, or local community collectives, these shops provide a sustainable way to raise essential funds while giving pre-owned goods a second life. At Tower Systems, we recognise the unique contribution of the charity sector and are committed to supporting it through specialised technology and significant cost relief.

To assist these organisations in maximising their impact, we offer our specialised point of sale software to registered charities at half the usual price. This initiative is a core part of our commitment to giving back, helping to strengthen the local communities that these shops serve. Despite the reduced cost, we provide these organisations with the same high level of human-based technical support and training as our full-fee-paying customers.

The software itself is designed to meet the specific operational needs of an op-shop environment. It is intentionally user-friendly, ensuring that volunteers, who may only work a few hours a week, can learn the system quickly and process sales with confidence. This ease of use reduces the training burden on shop managers and ensures a smooth experience for both staff and donors.

Functionality within the platform allows for flexible management of a diverse and ever-changing inventory. Shops can choose to track sales by broad product categories or by specific items, depending on what best suits their workflow. The system also handles flexible product pricing and the ability to sell by product type rather than relying solely on individual barcodes, which is often more practical for donated goods.

Beyond basic transactions, the software helps build deeper community connections. It includes tools to manage discounts for specific community groups and can track member engagement to help the charity better understand its supporter base. For managers who need to oversee operations remotely, the software also offers off-location management capabilities.

By providing robust, professional tools at an accessible price point, we aim to empower independent charity shops to operate more efficiently. This partnership allows these vital organisations to focus less on administration and more on their primary mission of supporting their local communities.

We are happy to demonstrate to store managers, a board or others involved in the decision making process. We record the demonstration so it can be shared through the organisation.

Our jeweller POS software helps local independent jewellers thrive

O

Independent jewellers across Australia and New Zealand face a set of management challenges that are specific to their craft. From managing delicate repairs to tracking inventory by weight and grade, the requirements of a jewellery business differ significantly from those of a standard retail outlet. At Tower Systems, our commitment to supporting these small, independent businesses is built on decades of experience and a genuine understanding of these unique needs.

Our history in this space began in 2000 with the acquisition of Red Software, an established name in jewellery business management. Since then, we have focused on evolving those foundational tools into a modern, comprehensive jeweller specific point of sale platform. Today, over 300 jewellers rely on our software to manage their daily operations.

The software is designed to handle the intricate details that matter to a professional jeweller. One important feature is the repair management system. This allows businesses to track pieces as they move through the workshop, ensuring clear communication with the customer and accurate record-keeping. The system also produces professional valuation certificates, which are essential for high-value items and insurance purposes.

Managing inventory in a jewellery store requires precision. Our software supports stock management by weight and grade, allowing for the accurate tracking of precious metals and gemstones. For businesses that deal in vintage or pre-owned pieces, the platform includes specific facilities for handling second-hand goods, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Customer relationships are the heart of independent retail. The software includes loyalty tools designed specifically for the industry. It can track important dates, such as anniversaries and birthdays, enabling jewellers to provide a personalised service that encourages repeat visits. Our special order facility also ensures that when a customer requests a specific item not currently in stock, the system tracks the request from the initial enquiry through to the final sale.

We believe in the power of local, independent businesses. Our software is developed with direct input from the jewellers who use it, ensuring that every update adds real value to their operations. We do not design our tools for large franchises or massive chains. Our focus remains 100% on the independent retailer. By providing robust, modern, and user-friendly technology, we help local jewellers focus on what they do best: providing exceptional craft and service to their communities.

The insights dashboard: Finding time to grow your business in POS software

T

For many small business retailers, the daily grind can be all-consuming. There is a significant difference between being busy and being profitable, yet finding the time to bridge that gap often feels impossible when you are managing a lean roster and a physical shop floor.

At Tower Systems, we understand this challenge because our team includes people with lived, current retail experience. We know you don’t always have an hour to walk the aisles looking for gaps or analyzing spreadsheets. That is why we developed the Insights Dashboard – a free facility built directly into our POS software that constantly monitors your business performance in the background.

Turning data into actionable steps

The Insights Dashboard is designed to provide immediate value, even if you only have thirty minutes to spare. It curates data and translates it into plain-speaking insights that help you make informed decisions quickly.

Two of the most impactful features within the dashboard include:

“What am I missing out on?” This tab identifies specific, actionable steps you can take to improve sales and boost profit based on your current data.

“What’s not working?” This provides a direct look at underperforming areas of your business, allowing you to address issues without having to manually hunt for them.

More than just a cash register

It is one thing to use POS software as a replacement for a cash register to process payments and work out change. It is another thing entirely to use that software as a tool for success. The Insights Dashboard acts as a starting point for your daily operations, offering a clear view of how to improve your business performance right now.

Because we build, support, and train our users on this software ourselves, we are personally invested in ensuring these tools work for the local, independent retailers we serve. Our goal is to help you run a more efficient and successful business by making your data work for you.

If you have a spare window in your day, we encourage you to explore the dashboard. It is a powerful resource for any retailer looking to move beyond “busy” and toward genuine growth.

At the heart of Tower Systems is a commitment to the success of local, independent, specialty retailers. We recognise that your time is your most valuable asset, which is why our Australian-based team focuses on creating tools that provide clarity instead of complexity. Whether we are helping you bridge the gap between your shop floor and a Shopify store or providing the data-driven insights needed to make 2026 your best year yet, our goal remains the same: to empower your business to thrive.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the shops that anchor our communities and look forward to continuing that partnership through innovation and honest, local support.

POS software total cost of ownership: let’s price compare Shopify POS with Tower Systems POS

P

When selecting a point of sale (POS) system, many independent retailers focus on the initial monthly subscription fee. While the entry-level price is easy to find, it rarely tells the full story. To understand the actual impact on your profit and loss statement, you must consider the total cost of ownership. This figure includes the software rental alongside the ongoing cost of processing every transaction your business makes.

Understanding your total cost of ownership is vital, it’s worth doing the homework for this can save you thousands of dollars a year.

The Shopify POS model

Shopify is a well-known name in the digital space, and its POS software is often a starting point for those looking for simplicity. For a standard monthly plan in Australia, the base cost is approximately $56 if paid monthly. Over a full year, this totals $672 for the software alone.

However, the software fee is only part of the expense. The significant cost lies in transaction processing. For a typical gift shop or specialty retailer in Australia with an annual turnover of $750,000, transaction fees are substantial. At a rate of roughly 1.95% to 2%, a retailer would pay approximately $14,625 in processing fees annually. When combined with the software subscription, the total cost to use the platform reaches $15,297 per year.

The Tower Systems alternative

In contrast, specialty retail software like Tower Systems operates on a different financial structure. For the same business, the software rental costs $2,820 for twelve months when paid monthly.

Tower Systems does not charge a fee per transaction, a tax some might call it.

The primary difference is in how payments are handled. Tower Systems allows retailers to use various EFTPOS processing partners. On an average rate, processing $750,000 in sales would cost approximately $7,500. It is worth noting that many retailers are able to negotiate even lower rates, potentially reducing this figure by another 25%.

Based on these average figures, the total cost for the Tower Systems software and transaction processing is $10,320 per year.

Comparing the bottom line

When you compare these two real-world examples, the difference is clear. Choosing the specialty retail software saves the business $4,977 annually compared to the Shopify model.

This calculation only covers the direct financial costs. It does not account for the specific retail features built into Tower Systems that may not be available in a more generic POS platform. Furthermore, the value of accessible, human-led technical support is a vital consideration for small business owners who cannot afford downtime.

Making an informed decision

A saving of nearly $5,000 a year is a significant amount for any independent business. It represents capital that could be reinvested in inventory, marketing, or staffing.

Retail is personal. When you evaluate technology, take the time to look beyond the marketing headlines. Speak with the people behind the software and ensure you have all the facts before committing. Prices and processing rates do change, so it is important to verify current figures at the time of your decision.

By being thorough in your comparison and focusing on the total cost of ownership, you can protect your margins and ensure your technology serves your business effectively. You can learn more about these specialty retail tools at www.towersystems.com.au.

Advancing small business retail efficiency: Insights into the latest Tower Systems POS software update

A

The release of our Tower Systems Retailer 3.4.4 POS software last week marks a significant step forward in how specialty retailers can leverage technology to simplify daily operations. This update introduces further advanced artificial intelligence tools and refines essential product lookup integrations, particularly for those in the book and newsagency trades.

This update, our first for 2026, sets us on a path of expansion of benetfits and services for our small business retail customers. Our development team has focused on practical features that save time and provide profit-focussed business insights and assists.

Sophisticated AI tools for everyday tasks

A major highlight of this version is the expanded AI integration. We have introduced support for Anthropic’s “Claude” model, giving retailers more choice in how they utilise AI within the software.

The new AI Report Analysis feature turns data into action. When previewing a report in Retailer, users can now select an AI Analysis button. The system reads the report and provides a concise summary of key insights. This allows retailers to identify trends or issues immediately without manually auditing every line of a spreadsheet.

The AI Invoice Import has been enhanced with a file upload option. Rather than just sending extracted text, the system can now send the raw invoice file to the AI model. This improves the accuracy of reading images and scanned PDF documents. In our testing, this method is often more cost-effective and delivers superior results for complex invoices.

Improved integrations for book retailers

For bookshops and newsagents, managing bibliographic data is a core task. Retailer 3.4.4 introduces a unified “External Feeds” screen. This combines several product lookup integrations into one interface, including:

  • TitlePage (now updated to the latest API)
  • Nielsen BookData
  • Bowker Books
  • Barcode Lookup

The update to the TitlePage API is particularly important. To maintain this connection, users will need to request a new security token from TitlePage. This ensures a more secure and stable data flow for your book inventory.

Refinements across the system

Beyond the headline features, this update includes numerous improvements driven by user feedback. These changes target various areas of the software to ensure a smoother experience:

  • Customer Management: When searching for a customer, the search term now prefills the “Add Customer” screen, saving time during new registrations. We have also added the ability to hide “Please Pay By” dates on statements for those who prefer a different layout.
  • Point of Sale: We have reinstated the print button on receipt previews and improved the speed of adding items to quotes.
  • Invoice Arrivals: A new “Save & New” button allows for a quicker transition between processing multiple invoices.
  • Stock Management: An “Author” column has been added to the Stock Manager, providing better visibility for book-related inventory.

This update reflects our commitment to providing Australian retailers with tools that are both powerful and easy to use. By integrating AI and refining our core database connections, Retailer 3.4.4 helps you focus less on administration and more on serving your customers.

There are plenty of enhancements in this update that link directly back to suggestions from customers, for which we are sincerely grateful.

Total Cost of Ownership: Why Your Small Business POS Choice is a $5,000+ Profit Decision

T

A friend opening a shop recently told us they were choosing Shopify POS because “it’s so easy.”

Knowing their plans for growth, we looked at the actual numbers. They expect to turn over $500,000 in their first year. Using that as a base, the costs start to add up quickly.

Shopify costs $149 a month. They will also need Shopify POS Pro for advanced inventory tools, which adds $129 a month. Then there is the mandatory payments cost of $9,250. For this small business, the total cost of ownership is $12,586.

In comparison, software rental with Tower Systems Pty Ltd Systems is $2,820 for the year. This includes advanced inventory management and other specialty features. Because you can use more competitive EFTPOS rates, merchant fees for that volume average around $5,000. This brings the total cost to $7,820.

The software they assumed was more expensive was actually set to save them $4,766 a year.

Shopify is easy to sign up for. Their $1 a month trial is a clever hook. I suspect plenty of retailers stay because they assume switching is too difficult. It is not hard to switch, especially when you see the impact on your profit and loss statement.

That is nearly five thousand dollars in profit staying in the business. This is before considering the benefits of specialty retail features or the ability to call a local person for support.

Too many retailers end up paying what we’d call a ‘laziness tax.’ We get busy, the $1 trial feels like a win, and by the time the business scales, we’re too entrenched to look at the mounting costs. But that $4,766 isn’t just a number on a spreadsheet—it’s the cost of a new part-time staffer for the holidays, a significant marketing push, or a much-needed shop floor upgrade. Staying with a system because it was ‘easy to start’ is a decision to leave your own hard-earned profit on the table for someone else to collect.

Beyond the savings, there is a functional gap that ‘all-in-one’ platforms rarely bridge. Specialty retail isn’t generic.  Generic platforms often send you to extra-cost apps for important functionality, or they charge more. lWhen you choose software designed for your specific niche, you aren’t just saving on merchant fees; you’re gaining tools that actually help you sell more, rather than just tools that help you check out.

The ‘hidden’ value of local support shouldn’t be overlooked. When your POS goes down on a busy Saturday morning, the difference between an overseas chat queue and a local expert who understands the Australian retail landscape is immeasurable. A partnership with a software provider should be about more than just a transaction; it should be about having a support structure that values your business’s survival as much as you do.

Total cost of ownership matters. Ease of entry should not come at the expense of your bottom line.

Let’s talk about “App fatigue” among independent small business retailers.

L

Small business owners are busy and often tired. They juggle many roles: buyer, marketer, bookkeeper, sales, HR, visionary. They are also software managers. The rise of cloud-based tools brought promises of efficiency. Yet, for many, it has led to ‘app fatigue’.

App fatigue is a real problem. We see it in our work with retailers. It describes the mental and financial strain of managing too many separate software applications. Each app promises to solve a specific problem. One handles accounting. Another manages social media. A third processes payments. A fourth tracks inventory. The list goes on.

This approach creates complexity. Retailers spend valuable time learning new interfaces. They transfer data between disconnected systems. They troubleshoot integration issues. Each app needs its own login and password. Each has its own subscription fee. These costs add up quickly. They also have to mediate between suppliers pointing at each other.

Consider a typical small retail operation. They might use one platform for their website. Then a different one for their in-store sales. They need a separate app for customer loyalty programs. Another for email marketing. Perhaps another for repairs management. Maybe another for business intelligence. This can easily mean five, six, or even more different applications.

The initial promise of simplicity fades. Instead, retailers find themselves overwhelmed. Time is spent on administrative tasks. Time that could be used serving customers. Or developing new products. Or simply growing the business.

App fatigue less common for businesses using vertical market POS software. Vertical market POS software is designed specifically for a particular industry. For example, a POS made for a newsagency includes specific functions for magazine returns. A system for a garden centre tracks plant inventory and seasonal sales. This specialisation means fewer add-on apps are needed. The core software already includes the necessary features.

Many apps claim to integrate. True, seamless integration is rare.  The data isn’t always live or accurate across all platforms. This creates further headaches. Decisions are made on incomplete information.

The financial burden is significant too. Many apps have monthly fees. These fees appear small individually. But collectively, they become a substantial overhead. A retailer might pay $30 here, $50 there. Soon, these small amounts equate to hundreds of dollars each month. This directly impacts profit margins. It’s an invisible tax on doing business.

Small business owners need clarity. They need systems that simplify their daily operations. Not complicate them. They need tools that work together effortlessly. Without requiring constant manual oversight. They need integrated solutions. These solutions should offer core functionality within one platform.

Choosing the right software is critical. Retailers should seek comprehensive platforms. Especially those tailored to their specific industry. Vertical market POS software often provides this. It reduces the need for multiple, disconnected apps. This approach frees up resources. It lowers operational costs. It helps owners focus on what matters most. Running their business effectively. And serving their customers better. It’s about working smarter. Not just harder.

If you are a specialty retailer, look for software that serves your particular type of business. This should rely on few apps to cover what you need at the core of your day to day operations.

Modernising the Australian newsagency for a successful 2026

M

The landscape for local newsagencies has changed changing, and the tools used to manage these businesses must keep pace. As we move into 2026, the priority for many independent retailers is finding ways to work smarter while driving genuine sales growth. Tower Systems remains committed to this goal, providing Australian-made and supported software specifically tuned to the needs of the modern newsagent.

Our software is used by more newsagents than all other newsagency software combined. This position of trust comes from our focus on local, independent, specialty retailers. We understand that your business is unique and requires more than a generic point-of-sale system.

The impact of integrated technology

One of the most significant shifts for our users recently has been the introduction of purposeful AI tools within our newsagency software. These features are not about following a trend; they are about practical utility. By automating routine tasks, these tools are saving newsagents hours of manual work each week.

We delivered our first AI tools almost 4 years ago. Already in 2026 we have delivered AI enhancements that are genuinely leading edge.

Beyond time savings, the software is designed to identify opportunities for growth. Whether it is through smarter inventory management or identifying customer buying patterns, the goal is to help your business achieve its best possible performance this year.

A commitment to transparency and local support

We believe that local businesses deserve clarity. This is why we maintain a transparent pricing model, with packages starting from $246 a month. There are no hidden fees or complex structures. We want you to understand exactly what you are investing in and the value it brings to your shop floor.

Support is another critical pillar of our service. Because our software is developed and supported right here in Australia, you are dealing with people who understand your market and the specific requirements of the Australian newsagency industry.

Exploring the right fit for your business

Deciding to update your software is a significant step. We suggest starting with a conversation to see if our solution aligns with your specific goals. You can reach out to us by calling 1300 662 957 or emailing sales@towersystems.com.au.

During this discussion, our team will listen to your needs and provide an honest assessment. If we feel our software is not the right fit for your particular shop, we will be upfront and say so.

For those who prefer to see the technology in action first, our YouTube channel offers a variety of software demos and tutorials. This allows you to explore the interface and features at your own pace.

At Tower Systems, we are grateful to serve the local newsagents who form the backbone of so many Australian communities. We look forward to helping you make 2026 a standout year for your business.

Is Tower Systems an alternative to Lightspeed POS software?

I

We got a call from a retailer the other day asking is Tower Systems and alternative to Lightspeed POS software?

We didn’t answer yes right away because we need to understand the needs of the customer first. Also, we’ve never used Lightspeed.

There is where a question asking for a comparison with other software always should start – with the needs of the customer, and a note that we have not used other software. Too many software companies say their product is better than some other named product without ever having used that other product.

We develop POS software for specialty retailers in Australia and New Zealand. Our locally based developers have local retail experience. Our locally based help desk team members, too, have local retail experience.

That right there is a difference we speak to. Local retailers benefit from locally developed POS software. This localness means our customers can speak with someone easily, quickly for a question or a conversation abut retail. This is a good thing to test when looking at other POS software companies like Lightspeed.

Call is on 1300 662 957 in Australia or 0800 444 367 in New Zealand or email us at sales@towersystems.com.au. test us out. Then, test Lightspeed out similarly. This type of test is a good indicator – how long it takes to connect with a human who listens to your, is interested in you and seeks to understand your business can speak to the service you can expect from a POS software company. A call like we suggest here might be the most important step you take in considering the best POS software for your retail business.

Now, let’s get into some other consideration on lIghtspeed.

Payment Independence Versus Transaction Fees

The most significant feedback we receive from those evaluating their options relates to “Lightspeed Payments.” By mandating or heavily incentivising their own payment platform, some providers take a percentage of every sale a retailer makes. It’s like a tax on your revenue.

Tower Systems has offered integrated payments for 20+ years. You choose the payments platform that’s best for you. It will usually cost way less than Lightspeed payments.  Your POS provider should not be a “silent partner” in your revenue. We view per-transaction fees as a tax on your growth. The more successful you become, the more you pay the software company.

You are free to negotiate the best possible rate with your bank or a third-party provider. We have seen customers secure rates at 1% or lower. We do not take a cut of your sales because our job is to develop software, not to clip the ticket on your hard-earned turnover.

Built for Specialist Retailers

Public statements from Lightspeed suggest a shift in focus toward businesses with significant annual turnovers, often cited around US$500,000. Their trajectory appears to prioritise larger entities and franchise networks.

At Tower Systems, our focus remains on local, independent specialty retailers. We serve niche markets including:

  • Jewellers and gift shops
  • Garden centres and produce / stockfeed / farm supply stores
  • Bike, fishing, and outdoor shops
  • Toy and hobby stores
  • Pet shops and firearms dealers

We do not chase corporate retailers or franchises. Because we do not prioritise “big box” business, every customer has an equal voice in our software enhancement process.

Local Support and Human Connection

In an era of automated ticketing systems and overseas call centres, we remain committed to human contact. Tower Systems develops software locally in Australia and New Zealand. Our support team is based here too.

When you contact us, you speak to a person who understands the local retail landscape. We also operate a transparent enhancement process where every customer votes on future updates. Your feedback directly shapes the tools you use daily.

Is Tower Systems the Right Alternative?

The best POS software for your business depends on your specific priorities. If you are looking for flexibility, local accountability, and a predictable cost of ownership, we invite you to start a conversation.

We will not pressure you. If our solution is not the right fit for your operational needs, we will tell you so. However, if you are looking to move away from revenue-linked payment processing, we are ready to help.

Australian based website development for local small business retailers

A

For a local specialty retailer, stepping into eCommerce or updating an existing digital presence can feel daunting.

There are web developers out there who bedazzle with jargon and charge plenty to deliver little. Too often, they deliver a website that only they can maintain for you, for a fee of course.

Online success requires a website that works in harmony with your physical store operations and its tech platform, for efficiency, accuracy and success.

At Tower Systems, based in Hawthorn, Victoria, we have spent years delivering exactly that.

We provide expert, Shopify websites integrated with Point of Sale (POS) software. Our service is designed specifically for the specialty retailers we support every day, including jewellers, garden centres, newsagencies, bike shops, and toy stores.

Here’s our Tower Systems approach to web development for local small business retailers.

We are a POS software company at our core. This means we understand the daily realities of retail, from managing inventory to maintaining margin control. We build websites with a retail-first perspective.

Our web development is handled entirely in-house by our team in Melbourne. We do not outsource this work. By keeping our developers local, we ensure clear communication and a genuine understanding of the Australian retail landscape. While this may not be the cheapest option compared to offshore providers, it guarantees a higher quality and more commercially effective result. You work directly with a team invested in your success.

A fixed-price, transparent process.

We believe in transparency. Our process begins with a consultation to understand your specific needs. If we are a good fit for your business, we provide a fixed-price contract.

We price our web development services on a break-even basis. Our goal is to empower our small business POS software customers with a powerful, integrated online store rather than profiting from the build itself. It is an investment in the long-term viability of your business.

Our standard Shopify development service includes:

  1. Comprehensive consultation: A detailed review to scope your requirements.
  2. Asset checklist: A clear guide to help you provide the necessary text and images.
  3. Visual theme: We include a theme from the official Shopify store.
  4. Full POS integration: We connect your Tower Systems POS software to Shopify for seamless data transfer.
  5. Personal handover: A two-hour, one-on-one remote training session.
  6. Post-launch support: Three months of phone-based support to help you settle in.
  7. Handover guide: Documentation covering training and next steps.

Now, some experience-based, practical advice for your eCommerce journey.

Regardless of who builds your site, we want to see your business thrive. Here are a few tips for a successful launch:

  1. Define your goal: Are you looking for new customers or serving existing ones? Your primary goal should dictate your design.
  2. Keep shipping simple: Start with flat-rate shipping. You can add complexity once you understand your customers’ buying habits.
  3. Prioritise original content: Search engines reward unique descriptions. Avoid generic supplier text.
  4. Curate your range: You do not need to list every item. Start with a curated selection of best-sellers.
  5. Commit to the project: A website requires active support through social media and email marketing to drive traffic.

If you are ready to connect your physical store to a professional online presence, we are here to help. You can reach us on 1300 662 957 to start an obligation-free conversation.

Now, a website is a hungry beast. It needs to be fed. Launching is only the beginning. No matter, we have practical advice to help you there too, based on your own years of experience.
