Choosing the Right POS Software For Your Shop: Comparing Tower Systems and Retail Express for Your Business

C

Selecting a point-of-sale system can be complex. The right decision can add thousands to your bottom line while the wrong decision can cost plenty.

Do your research,. Take your time. Choose based on the evidence, based on what you see for yourself.

At Tower Systems, we take a specific approach to comparisons with other POS software. We focus on developing our software and supporting our partners rather than monitoring the products of our competitors. We have not used Retail Express ourselves. To our knowledge, their staff has not used our software either. This is a deliberate choice. We believe the only comparison that truly matters is the one you make based on the specific requirements of your shop.

A Focus on Independent Specialty Retail

Our software is designed for a specific community. We serve over 3,000 independent specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand. Our partners include garden centres, bike shops, jewellers, and newsagents. We also work closely with pet shops, toy stores, firearms dealers, and fashion boutiques.

Because we focus exclusively on local, small-to-medium businesses, we do not supply to large corporations or major franchises. This niche focus allows us to develop features that solve the real-world problems faced by independent owners. Our software is constantly evolving. The system we offer today is significantly different from the one we provided two years ago. This progress is driven almost entirely by suggestions from our retail community.

Transparency in Your Research

We believe that good business decisions are made in a calm, informed environment. Transparency is central to how we interact with potential partners. If you are curious about how our software functions, you can visit the Tower Systems YouTube channel at any time. We do not require sign-ups or email addresses for you to view these demonstrations. You can see the software in action at your own pace without any sales pressure.

If you want a deeper look, we offer personal demonstrations, where we focus on your specific needs and questions. During these sessions, we can walk through our system and focus on the areas most relevant to your operations. If you wish to conduct a function-by-function comparison with Retail Express, we are happy to sit with you and facilitate that process. This side-by-side review is the most effective way to see which platform aligns with your workflow.

Putting Your Needs First

A partnership with a software provider should be based on a genuine fit. From your first conversation with our sales team to your ongoing interactions with our help desk, our principle remains the same: your needs come first. We do not use hard sales pitches or high-pressure tactics.

Our goal is to support your success because that is the only way we succeed. If, during our discussions, we determine that Tower Systems is not the right fit for your specific business model, we will tell you so directly. We would rather see you find the correct tool for your shop than enter into a partnership that does not serve you well.

Finding an alternative to your current system is a process that deserves time and careful thought. We invite you to explore what we offer and see if our community-driven approach matches your vision for your business.

Choosing the Right POS Partner: Why We Think Tower Systems Is a Good Alternative to Epos Now

C

Selecting the best point of sale software for your shop can be a huge win financially and personally. Get it wrong and the costs can be high. The right system acts as the engine of the business, while the wrong one can be an anchor that drags.

Tower Systems offers a an alternative to Epos Now.

We are biased, we are Tower Systems. Our perspective, however, is shaped by the retailers we have welcomed from Epos Now to our own platform.

We are not a perfect fit for every business though. If our software does not suit your specific requirements, we will tell you. But for specialty retailers seeking deep functionality and a genuine partnership, we believe our offering stands apart.

A Local Approach to Software and Support

Retail in Australia and New Zealand has its own unique rhythms, terminology, and requirements. Tower Systems is locally developed and supported. Many on our team have local retail experience. The tools our customers use every day are built with a cultural and professional understanding of your specific market.

The difference is most noticeable when you need help. We do not operate offshore call centres or rely on rigid, scripted responses. Our help desk consists of skilled individuals with actual retail experience. They understand the pressure of a busy shop floor because they have been there themselves. They know our software intimately and do not need to read from a manual to solve your problems.

Transparency in Pricing and Contracts

A significant differences here at Tower Systems is our approach to contracts. We do not lock our customers into a long-term agreement. We back our software and service every month. If you decide the software is no longer right for you, you can cancel your rental with 30 days’ notice. This flexibility removes the financial risk often associated with rigid, multi-year commitments.

Our POS software pricing is transparent and simple:

  • No terminal limits: You can run the software on as many computers as you need in a single location for one fixed price.
  • Included features: Standard requirements like Xero and Shopify integrations, loyalty tools, and e-commerce links for platforms such as WooCommerce and Magento are included without surprise surcharges.
  • Payment flexibility: We do not force you into a specific EFTPOS provider. You are free to choose the payments gateway and bank that offer the best rates for your business.
  • No transaction clips: We do not take a percentage of your sales. You keep 100% of your revenue.

Specialist Tools for Growth

Our software is not a generalised, “one size fits all” solution. It is built for specialty retail. This means the functionality is deep, offering genuine pathways to increase your efficiency and profitability. Beyond the code itself, we provide the training and customer service necessary to help you actually leverage these money-making tools.

We invite you to put our software on the counter next to Epos Now and compare them function for function. We are confident that a detailed analysis will demonstrate the extensive benefits of a system tailored to local specialty retail.

If you are a happy Epos Now customer, we encourage you to stay with what works for you. However, if you are looking for an alternative that prioritises direct engagement, local expertise, and honest business terms, we would welcome the opportunity to chat.

Check us out, obligation free.

Protecting Your Profit: A Strategic Approach to Managing Retail Theft

P

Theft is always on the mind of retailers, especially local small business retailers. Too often, though, retailers don’t seek out evidence. It’s like they are better off not knowing. In our experience, theft cost a local retail business somewhere between 3% and 5% of annual turnover.

Whether committed by customers or employees, theft erodes your financial bottom line and weighs heavily on the emotional wellbeing of business owners.

At Tower Systems, we have spent decades developing point-of-sale software designed specifically for independent specialty retailers. While our primary goal is to provide efficient tools for transacting business, we have inadvertently become experts in theft detection. By analyzing data and supporting our customers, we have developed robust systems to identify and stop dishonest activity.

The Reality of Employee Theft
Employee theft can be debilitating. It is a sensitive issue that many small business owners find difficult to confront. However, ignoring the possibility does not protect the business. Over the years, our software has provided the evidence necessary to detect internal fraud, leading to successful prosecutions. Our team members have even stood in court as expert witnesses to explain how the data revealed these discrepancies.

Modern POS software is your strongest ally in this area. Our latest release incorporates advanced AI tools to shine a light on unusual patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. Beyond technology, we recommend establishing clear policies. Every staff member should understand the expectations for handling cash, inventory, and customer data. When employees know that a system of oversight exists, the temptation to act dishonestly is greatly reduced.

Regular audits and transparent inventory tracking are essential. By using your POS system to its full capacity, you create a structured environment where accuracy is the norm. This does not just stop theft; it adds genuine value to your business by ensuring your records reflect reality.

Managing Customer Theft with Data
Customer theft is a challenge that must be managed rather than merely lamented. It often targets specific high-value or easily concealed items. The first step to a solution is understanding exactly what is being stolen. This information is usually hidden in your profit and loss statements or revealed during stocktakes.

The AI tools embedded in our POS software do plenty of this work for you, bringing to you easy access to evidence of poi=ssible theft – at least actions worth investigating.

Once you identify the problem areas, you can develop a proactive plan. We suggest involving your entire team in the solution. Conduct weekly spot stocktakes on frequently stolen items and record the figures where staff can see them. This creates a shared goal for the team to reduce these losses.

Physical changes to your shop layout can also make a difference. Consider placing a portable workstation near “hot zones” so staff are frequently present in those areas while performing routine tasks like pricing or invoice checking. Ensure your security cameras cover these locations and eliminate blind spots. If a particular shelf is a constant target, try moving it to a different part of the store to see if the theft declines.

The Value of Taking Action
Theft that goes unaddressed fosters an environment of suspicion and lowers staff morale. Conversely, a proactive approach demonstrates strong leadership and commitment to the long-term health of the business.

We worked with a retailer who discovered regular losses through their business data. By identifying the pattern and implementing a plan, they returned $20,000 to their bottom line in a single year. In that instance, the theft occurred simply because the perpetrators believed no one was watching. Once the data was used to monitor the situation, the behaviour stopped.

Tower Systems is proud to stand with local, independent retailers across Australia and New Zealand. Our software offers the structure, efficiency, and insight needed to protect your hard-earned profits.

Helping small business retailers master POS software: Enhancing retail performance through collaborative learning

H

Already in 2026 we can see retail changing, local small retail especially. It’s exciting and challenging all at once for small retailers.

We understand the challenges of keeping up with technology for small business retailers. For years we were retailers ourselves. That lived experience helps us understand.

Small business retailers need a partner who understands the nuances of local retail and provides the tools to navigate a competitive market. Tower Systems addresses this need through a structured series of free POS software customer training meetings designed to help retailers extract maximum value from their point-of-sale technology.

These meetings are professional, interactive webinars. We focus on practical outcomes that affect the daily operations of a shop. The sessions are concise, typically running for thirty to sixty minutes. This allows busy store owners and managers to participate without significant disruption to their trading day. Each session includes dedicated time for questions and answers, ensuring that specific business concerns are addressed.

Mastering the essentials for business protection

Initial meetings in the series focus on mastering the Retailer software and support resources. These sessions cover essential shortcuts and backup protocols that protect the business from data loss. By understanding these technical fundamentals, retailers can reduce operational mistakes and ensure their systems run efficiently. This technical proficiency provides peace of mind and allows staff to focus on serving customers.

Driving growth through data and insights

Data is one of the most valuable assets a small retailer possesses. However, data is only useful if it leads to better decisions. Tower Systems hosts POS software training  sessions on unlocking growth through leveraging data. These meetings help retailers identify their most profitable products and uncover hidden trends. By using evidence-based insights, business owners can stop dead stock from draining cash flow. This approach allows for more strategic investment in inventory that genuinely drives revenue.

Innovating with artificial intelligence

POS software embedded artificial intelligence is essential in retail today. In our training we explore how AI integrations within our POS software can improve efficiency. Participants learn how to automate product descriptions and blog posts. They also see how AI can assist with supplier invoices and complex reports. Implementing these tools helps a small business operate with the sophistication of a much larger competitor while saving significant time on administrative tasks.

Strengthening customer loyalty and retention

A sustainable retail business relies on repeat customers. The meeting series covers various strategies for building loyalty that lasts. This includes the effective use of discount vouchers, loyalty points, and gift cards. Retailers learn how to create discount profiles that reward their best customers without eroding margins. By deepening the value of every visit, stores can improve brand awareness and ensure long-term stability in their local community.

Streamlining inventory and online sales

Managing complex stock is a common pain point for many specialty retailers. Sessions on building bundles, kits, and variants provide a solution for structured inventory management. This is complemented by training on smart ordering strategies. By using automatic orders and reorder reports, retailers can eliminate the guesswork of manual purchasing. This ensures that popular items are always in stock, preventing missed sales opportunities.

The integration between the physical store and the digital world is also a priority. Meetings on e-commerce connections help retailers manage their webstores with confidence. This ensures that online stock levels accurately mirror what is on the shelves. A reliable online presence allows a business to win sales at any hour of the day.

Continuous improvement for the independent retailer

These customer meetings represent a commitment to ongoing education. They are available to join shortly before the scheduled start time through a simple online interface. By participating in these sessions, Australian and New Zealand retailers can stay updated on the latest software enhancements. This collaborative environment fosters a community of informed business owners who are better equipped to thrive. Investment in knowledge is the most effective way to ensure a retail business remains resilient and profitable for years to come.

These regular free training sessions in our POS software are another way we are helping local small business retailers benefit from their use of our POS software.

Why Your Game Shop Needs More Than Just a Standard POS System

W

If you own or run an independent game shop, your greatest assets are your expertise and your community. Unlike big-box retailers or massive online marketplaces, a local game shop thrives on the relationships built across the counter. However, passion alone cannot manage complex inventory, pre-order cycles, or multi-channel sales.

We get it. here at Tower Systems we only serve local independent specialty retail businesses.

To compete, your technology must be as specialised as your stock. We have developed a point-of-sale solution specifically for game shops in Australia and New Zealand. It is not a generic retail tool; it is a platform evolved from years of experience in the toy and hobby sector, refined to meet the specific demands of the modern gaming market.

More than transactions

A standard cash register tracks money, but a specialist game shop POS tracks opportunities. Local shops are the heartbeat of gaming communities, and our software is designed to help you leverage that “localness.”

By using the system to manage community group pricing and track links to local gaming clubs, you create a destination rather than just a shop. You can share your team’s expert knowledge directly through the system, ensuring that every customer receives the high level of service that keeps them coming back.

Features built for you

The unique nature of gaming retail requires tools that generic software often overlooks. Our platform simplifies the “heavy lifting” of shop management:

  • Pre-order Management: Secure sales and manage deposits for major releases before the stock even hits your shelves.

  • Special Orders: Automate the process of ordering specific items for customers, including automated notifications when their items arrive.

  • Serial Number Tracking: Maintain precise records for consoles and high-end hardware to simplify warranty claims and security.

  • Age Verification: Ensure your team stays compliant with age-restricted titles through structured, built-in checking prompts.

Rethinking loyalty

Points programs often feel hollow to modern shoppers. We provide loyalty tools that you can actually “bank” on. Instead of confusing point conversions, our software allows for personalised rewards and incentives that drive a deeper visit value.

Because the system tracks purchase history, you can market to your customers with surgical precision. If a regular shopper exclusively buys tabletop miniatures, you can send them targeted updates about new arrivals in that specific category, rather than cluttering their inbox with irrelevant offers.

Connecting your physical and digital storefront

We know that not every customer will walk past your front door. To expand your reach without doubling your workload, our POS software features a seamless, direct link to Shopify.

When you make a sale in-store, your online stock levels update automatically. When an order comes in through your website, it appears in your POS reports. This unified approach allows you to sell to gamers across the country while keeping your local operations streamlined.

What’s included?

We provide a considered and comprehensive solution for a flat monthly rental. Your investment covers:

  • Unlimited Licences: Install the software on as many computers as you need in your shop location.

  • Human Support: Access our help desk via phone or email six days a week, including Saturdays.

  • Emergency Access: After-hours support for urgent “system down” queries.

  • Seamless Integrations: Direct links to Xero, Shopify, and electronic supplier invoice tools to reduce bookkeeping and data entry time.

The gaming industry never stands still, and neither does our software. We constantly update the platform based on direct feedback and suggestions from our community of retailers.

If you are ready to move beyond basic retail and embrace a system made for your specific niche, contact Tower Systems today. We’d love to show you how this software can transform your daily operations and help your shop thrive.

Running a successful pet store or farm supply business requires more than just passion for the land and animals. In a competitive marketplace, the difference between a thriving shop and one that struggles often comes down to the quality of the data available to the owner. Tower Systems provides a specialised Point of Sale (POS) solution designed to bridge this gap for AIRR and Tuckers Pet & Produce members, as well as unaffiliated independent retailers across Australia and New Zealand.

A Focus on Local Business Needs

Small business retailers face unique challenges, from managing diverse stock lines to navigating complex supplier relationships. We understand these pressures intimately. Our software is built to serve the specific requirements of the pet and produce sector. Whether you operate a single boutique pet shop or a large-scale rural supply outlet, the goal remains the same: to improve efficiency and protect your bottom line.

By providing a robust platform, we help owners move away from guesswork. Our system allows you to manage multiple price levels and monitor stock movement with precision. This level of control is essential for identifying slow-moving items that tie up valuable capital. When you reduce costs associated with obsolete stock, you immediately improve your business health.

Driving Customer Loyalty and Spend

A core pillar of retail success is the ability to bring customers back. Tower Systems helps you reward your shoppers in a way they truly understand. Our loyalty tools are transparent and easy for customers to engage with, which naturally increases repeat visits.

Beyond simple rewards, the software helps you boost the average spend per visit. By using data to understand purchasing patterns, you can make informed decisions about product placement and promotions. When your staff have fast and accurate tools at the counter, the customer experience is seamless. This professional interaction builds trust and encourages long-term loyalty.

Seamless Integration and Group Benefits

Efficiency extends beyond the sales floor. For members of buying groups like AIRR and Tuckers, our software offers significant advantages. You can leverage consistent stock files and electronic invoicing, which dramatically reduces manual data entry. This consistency also simplifies business-to-business comparisons, allowing you to see how your performance measures up.

To ensure your back-office operations are just as smooth, our POS system integrates seamlessly with leading accounting platforms including Xero, MYOB, and QuickBooks. This connectivity ensures that your financial data is accurate and up to date without the need for double handling.

Security and Operational Peace of Mind

Protecting your business is a top priority. Our software includes built-in tools to monitor employee activity and reduce the risk of internal theft. By establishing consistent processes and securing your system settings, you create a safer environment for your data and your assets.

The reporting and analytics suite provides a clear view of your sales and supplier performance. These insights often uncover hidden opportunities for growth that would otherwise go unnoticed. Having this information at your fingertips allows you to make strategic decisions based on facts rather than intuition.

Why Choose Tower Systems?

We believe in providing more than just code. We provide a partnership. Unlike many software providers, we are Australian-operated and offer localised support. When you call us, you speak to a human, not an automated system.

Personalised Service: You have access to the entire team for prompt assistance.

On-Site Support: We believe in being there. We provide in-person installation and training to ensure your team is confident from day one.

The Strategic Value of Choosing Australian Made POS Software

T

Small business retailers face a critical decision when selecting the core technology to run their operations. While the global software market is vast, there are distinct functional and operational advantages to choosing a locally developed point of sale system.

When we are asked why Australian made software serves local retailers better than overseas alternatives, the answer goes beyond geography. It is about alignment, accessibility, and the health of the local economic ecosystem.

Software developed in Australia is built specifically for the Australian business environment. This means the terminology, tax compliance features, and regulatory reporting tools are native to the system rather than being “bolted on” as an afterthought.

A local aesthetic and intuitive workflow make the software easier to learn and more pleasant to use daily. Overseas providers often struggle to replicate this level of relevance. No matter their budget, an offshore company cannot fully grasp the nuances of the Australian retail landscape.

Accessibility is a primary customer service differentiator. When you have a query or face a technical challenge, being able to speak with a person who understands your environment is invaluable.

Many global software firms redirect users to international call centres where staff follow rigid, impersonal scripts. In contrast, local support allows for genuine conversation. Australian retailers value these relationships. You are a significant partner to a local software company, not just another entry in a massive global database. This proximity also grants you better access to senior management, ensuring your voice is heard regarding software enhancements and business needs.

Small, local software developers are often more agile to local needs than bloated global corporations. They can pivot quickly to address local market shifts or specific feedback from their user base. This responsiveness allows a local provider to be smarter and more capable in how they support your specific niche.

Choosing local software creates a cycle of mutual benefit. Plenty of money spent with an Australian based business stays within the economy, supporting local jobs, infrastructure, and services like health and education. While a overseas based corporation spends overseas on labour and more – the local economy misses out.

Your POS software should be the tool that best serves your specific requirements. We encourage retailers to look beyond basic functionality. Consider the quality of support, the ease of communication, and the long-term commitment the provider has to the Australian retail sector.

In a small business, local knowledge is a competitive advantage. Selecting software that shares that foundation is a practical win for the modern retailer.

Advice: Why Data is a Critical Asset When Buying a Local Retail Business

A

When you decide to purchase a retail business, the physical assets are often the focus of the transaction. You look at the stock on the shelves, the shop fittings, and the remaining term on the lease. You might also review supplier relationships to ensure you can continue trading without interruption. However, one of the most significant assets is frequently overlooked in the contract of sale: the historical data.

Buying a business is essentially buying an expectation of performance. You are investing in the ability of that business to generate a specific level of turnover and profit. Without access to the historical data, you have no way to verify that the figures presented during the sale process were accurate.

Historical data provides a roadmap of how the business has performed across different seasons and economic shifts. It reveals which products sell, which customers are loyal, and where the peak trading periods occur. If this data is wiped or if you are denied access to it upon taking ownership, you are essentially starting from scratch.

As AI enabled POS software evolved, the data about your business will help inform insights offered about business performance. Data is what the AI uses for its insights.

Too often, new owners find themselves in a state of stress because their contract of sale was incomplete. They take over the shop only to find the Point of Sale (POS) system has been cleared, leaving them with no records of past sales or inventory trends. This lack of information makes it difficult to make informed decisions about future stock purchases or marketing strategies.

To avoid this, it is vital to ensure that your contract for sale includes a specific provision for access to historical data. Every asset you expect to gain access to should be clearly listed in the documentation. Data is a core business asset, and it must be treated with the same importance as the physical inventory.

At Tower Systems, we work with small, independent, and specialty retailers across Australia and New Zealand. Our role is to develop POS software and provide the training necessary to help you maximise your business’s profitability. In our daily work, we see firsthand how critical data is to the success of a retail transition.

While we do not provide legal or accounting advice, we strongly encourage any prospective business owner to understand exactly what they are buying. Before you pay the purchase price, confirm that you will have full access to the data that proves the business’s worth.

Supporting the Mental Well-being of Small Business Retailers

S

Mental health is a significant challenge within the small business retail sector. Local business owners often face an overwhelming amount of pressure from various directions. Financial concerns, the evolving landscape of the high street, and complex supplier relationships all contribute to this burden. Additionally, managing staff and day-to-day operations can leave retailers feeling isolated and swamped.

A Conversation-First Approach

At Tower Systems, our POS software help desk operates differently. We don’t follow rigid scripts because we view every interaction as a meaningful conversation. Sometimes, a retailer calls not just for technical support, but because they simply need to be heard. Our team is trained to listen first. We understand that by providing a listening ear, we can help ease some of the immediate pressure a business owner is feeling.

Many of the calls we receive involve issues that are only loosely related to our software. Regardless of the topic, our priority is to offer support and guidance wherever possible. We believe that even a slight reduction in stress can provide a retailer with the clarity needed to make important decisions for their business.

Strengthening the Retail Community

Our commitment is exclusively to small business retailers. We believe in the vital role that independent shops play in local communities across Australia and New Zealand. Whether it is a newsagency, a garden centre, a toy shop, or a pet store, these businesses are the backbone of our towns.

Running these businesses can be a lonely experience. By acting as a comforting voice or a helpful resource, we aim to strengthen the small business community. We want retailers to know they are not alone in their journey.

Beyond Software

While we are a software company dedicated to delivering high-quality point of sale solutions, we are also people helping people. If a retailer is concerned about the health of their business, we provide the tools to help them understand their current position. By offering data-driven insights, we help owners see the steps they can take to improve their situation.

Improving the health of a business is often the first step toward improving the mental well-being of the person running it. We are here to provide professional, courteous, and gentle support to ensure our customers can find enjoyment in running their retail businesses.

POS software embedded AI tools help small business retailers leverage AI easily

P

The current conversation surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) is filled with noise. Small business retailers often hear conflicting reports: some claim AI is a revolutionary tool for growth, while others warn it could threaten traditional business models. This creates a sense of uncertainty for independent shop owners who are unsure how to practically apply this technology.

Integrating AI into Your Daily Workflow

The most effective way for a small retailer to engage with AI is through the tools already embedded in their Point of Sale (POS) software. Rather than searching for complex, external platforms, retailers can find practical applications within the systems they use every day.

AI is a game changer for small business retailers. These tools help them compete more effectively, and successfully.

Tower Systems has focused on delivering embedded AI tools for over three years, specifically designed to save time and enhance business profitability. By integrating these features directly into the POS environment, the technology becomes an accessible extension of existing retail tasks.

Real-World Applications for Local Shops

AI is no longer a theoretical concept; it is being used right now to streamline operations in specialty retail. Key practical examples include:

  • Automated Invoice Processing: Traditional manual data entry for supplier invoices is replaced by AI that analyses documents and extracts pricing and product descriptions automatically.
  • Intelligent Stock Reordering: Agentic AI can work in the background to track sales patterns and prepare suggested orders, ensuring stock arrives just in time to meet demand.
  • Automated Marketing Content: For businesses with an online presence, AI can generate blog posts and promotional content for webstore items, reducing the time spent on digital marketing.

Benefits for Specialty Retailers

These tools are designed to provide immediate benefits to a wide range of specialty businesses, including newsagencies, jewellers, garden centres, and gift shops. By focusing on automated functions like stock management and data entry, AI helps reduce labour costs and allows owners to focus on customer engagement.

The goal of implementing AI in a small business should be practical efficiency. By utilising the software updates and features already available, retailers can navigate the noise and find genuine value in this evolving technology.

We are proud to make AI accessible for small business retailers and to back this with training and support to make its use easy, and meaningful.

An alternative for retailers frustrated with plan changes announced by Lightspeed

A

A Lightspeed customer recently reached out to us frustrated by a contact from Lightspeed about a change in their plan. The price increase for them will be $130.00 a month including GST. This is a price increase they had not budgeted for, a price increase considerably outside of other operational cost price increases.

While the messaging frames this as a necessary infrastructure upgrade to support more powerful tools, the practical outcome for many small business owners is a mandatory price increase. Although initial discounts are often provided to soften the transition, the long-term reality is a higher fixed cost for the business.

Our Tower Systems POS software is a alternative for Lightspeed customers, one that may be worth considering if you have received notice of a price increase and are frustrated with it.

For a local independent retailer, every overhead cost matters. Cost increases can be okay if they unlock significant additional commercial value for the businesss.

Why Tower Systems is a good alternative

We develop and support our software in Australia and New Zealand.

If you are currently reconsidering your relationship with Lightspeed, here is how Tower Systems operates differently:

  • You matter: The email from Lightspeed to the customer that we have seen  does not name any person at Lightspeed. It offers no phone number. There is no individual email address. It makes contact difficult. Here at Tower Systems, every customer has direct contact details – phone and email – for our leadership team. We make sure our customers can easily contact us.
  • Your say matters: our customers can easily suggest software enhancements and vote on these and suggestions from others. Our Software Ideas platform is a service loved by the retailers in our community.
  • Payment independence: Unlike some competitors who push specific payment gateways or add per-transaction fees, we believe you should choose the merchant services that work best for your bottom line.
  • Local, human support: When you need help, you talk to someone here in Australia or New Zealand who understands your business type—whether you run a garden centre, a jeweller, or a toy store.
  • No lock-in contracts: We earn your business every month. We don’t rely on long-term contracts to keep our customers.

The notice we have seen that was sent to a Lightspeed customers included a clause regarding termination. If you feel this mandatory change is not the right fit for your business, you generally have the option to exit your subscription without penalty if you act before the change takes effect.

Software should be an investment that yields a return, not an unpredictable expense. If you are looking for a stable, transparent, and locally-focused partner to power your retail shop, we invite you to see what Tower Systems can do.

We don’t know if our Tower Systems POS software is a good alternative to Lightspeed. Only you can decide that by looking at our software and comparing it to Lightspeed. We’d love to find out about your business needs and personally demonstrate our POS software to you.

From serial number tracking to selling by fractions to awesome loyalty tools to Shopify integration to easy supplier invoice import, Tower Systems offers software designed for many different specialty retail channels.

We Help Small Business Retailers Find Their Next Step

W

For a small business retailer, the most difficult challenge is often deciding what to do next. Daily life in a shop is a whirlwind of immediate tasks: cleaning, stocking shelves, managing staff, and negotiating with landlords or banks. These responsibilities pull owners in a hundred different directions every single day.

Having a viable next step helps local small business retailers thrive.

By the time the doors close, a retailer might feel exhausted from a hard day’s work. However, there is often a nagging sense that while they were busy, they did not actually make progress on the business itself. This feeling of defeat stems from focusing on maintenance rather than on actions that provide genuine value for the future.

A Different Approach to Retail Software

At Tower Systems, we recognise this cycle. While point-of-sale software is common, we focus on providing tools that help retailers identify valuable next steps. It is not just about pushing buttons or reading dense reports that take hours to analyse. It is about identifying specific actions a retailer can take today to benefit their business tomorrow.

The Insights Dashboard

We have designed our software to provide a clear path forward through an Insights Dashboard. It uses simple categories to highlight opportunities that are often overlooked:

  • What’s Working?: Owners often believe they know their best performers, but this data frequently surprises them by revealing hidden strengths in their inventory.
  • What’s Not Working?: This identifies areas where the business is stagnant, allowing owners to address inefficiencies they might have otherwise ignored.
  • What Am I Missing Out On?: This is perhaps the most critical insight. It tracks items that were out of stock which customers would have purchased.

Uncovering Hidden Value

The financial impact of these insights can be significant. In one instance, a retailer discovered they had missed out on $25,000 in revenue over a 12-month period simply because certain items were out of stock. That represents roughly $12,500 to $13,000 in lost gross profit.

Our mission is to help local, independent, small business retailers thrive. We are not interested in serving large franchises or big corporations. We believe that by providing clarity and identifying real opportunities for growth, we can help small businesses succeed in a competitive market. When our customers grow, we grow with them.

Through our work, we help local small business retailers find that next step.

Rethinking Loyalty: Points Versus Dollars for Small Business Retailers

R

Many small business retailers feel pressured to mimic the loyalty strategies of major national chains. Often, this leads to the implementation of a points-based program, where customers accrue points on every purchase to eventually redeem for products or discounts. While this is a familiar model, it may not be the most effective way for an independent retailer to demonstrate value to their customers.

The Complexity of Points

The challenge with points-based systems lies in their perceived value. If you ask a customer how much 50,000 points are worth, they often cannot give you an answer without looking it up. The value of a “point” is arbitrary and varies significantly from one retailer to another. What is worth a significant amount at a major supermarket may be worth very little at another national store. For a customer, this creates a layer of friction and uncertainty regarding the actual benefit they are receiving for their loyalty.

Ask any shopper and they know what a $ is worth whereas they will struggle to know what a point is worth.

Our approach at Tower Systems is to provide small business retailers with clarity, and options.

The Clarity of Discount Vouchers

At Tower Systems, we offer an alternative called discount vouchers. While the name is simple, the impact on customer engagement is significant. Instead of abstract points, this system calculates a percentage of a customer’s purchase and prints a specific dollar value directly onto the bottom of their receipt.

For example, a customer making a $500 purchase might receive a voucher for $45 off their next visit. This voucher can be set to expire within a specific timeframe, such as 28 or 60 days, encouraging a return visit to the store.

The primary advantage of this approach is immediate clarity. When a customer sees a $45 reward, they instantly understand its value. There is no confusion or need for calculation. Everyone knows what $45 is worth, which makes the appreciation feel more tangible and direct.

Tailored for Small Business

While large-scale retailers often find voucher systems too complex to manage across thousands of locations, we have simplified the process for the independent specialist. Our software gives you complete control over how the voucher amount is calculated and how it can be used within your business. You can choose to enable points, vouchers, or both, depending on what best serves your specific customer base.

Hundreds of our customers are already using discount vouchers to drive repeat traffic and increase average spend. By providing clear, dollar-driven incentives, you can move away from the ambiguity of points and offer a loyalty experience that is easy for your customers to understand and appreciate.

The Human Cost of Transactional Pricing in Indie Retail

T

Local independent retail is built on a foundation of genuine relationships, not merely the accumulation of transactions. This core truth is often overlooked by software companies, particularly those employing a percentage-based pricing model for their Point of Sale (POS) systems. Such an approach can feel less like a partnership and more like a regressive tax, revealing a significant disconnect with the operational realities and philosophical heart of indie retail.

Tower Systems does not charge a per transaction cost, a tax, for use of its POS software.

Consider the typical independent shop. It is often staffed by casual employees who might work only one or two shifts a week. These individuals are the frontline ambassadors for the brand. They are not technology specialists. Their priority is the customer standing directly in front of them. When a question arises, they need immediate, accurate answers. They require intuitive software that facilitates service, rather than hindering it. A delay caused by a cumbersome interface or a confusing error message directly impacts the customer experience. This is where the personal touch, the very essence of indie retail, can be eroded.

Large technology companies, in their pursuit of efficiency and scale, frequently focus on metrics such as “low cost per contact” for their support systems. This often translates into automated responses, lengthy wait times, or complex multi-tiered support structures. While these strategies might reduce operational costs for the tech provider, they exact a heavy toll on the independent retailer. A casual staff member, faced with a queue of customers and an unyielding automated system, experiences frustration that can quickly transfer to the customer. This impersonal approach clashes directly with the deeply personal nature of local retail.

The percentage-of-transaction pricing model exacerbates this issue. Every sale in an independent shop represents not just revenue, but the successful culmination of a relationship. It is the result of curated stock, personalised recommendations, and a welcoming atmosphere. When a software company takes a slice of each transaction, it implicitly claims a share in this relational success without contributing directly to its creation. This model can feel like a penalty for growth. As a business flourishes through its own hard work and community engagement, its core software costs increase disproportionately.

Furthermore, this pricing structure introduces unwelcome unpredictability into a sector that often operates on tight margins. Independent retailers require stable, forecastable overheads to manage their cash flow effectively. A fixed subscription fee allows for clearer financial planning. A variable cost tied to every sale, however, can turn software from a predictable utility into an erratic expense, making budgeting more challenging. It also creates a misaligned incentive, where the software provider benefits from increased volume regardless of the actual value or strain placed on their service by that volume.

Ultimately, the most effective POS software for independent retail should operate as a supportive, almost invisible, infrastructure. It should empower the person behind the counter, making their job easier and allowing them to focus on what truly matters: the customer. When pricing models become punitive or create friction, they cease to be tools for empowerment and instead become barriers to genuine connection. It is time for the technology supporting indie retail to truly understand and uphold the personal essence of the retail experience.

Beyond the Obituary: Why the Media Gets the Newsagency Story Wrong

B

A recent ABC Gippsland report on the closure of the Sale Authorised Newsagency highlights a frustrating trend in national journalism. When a long-serving newsagent retires, the media often frames the story as an obituary for the entire industry. By focusing on a single closure in Gippsland, the ABC has once again demonstrated poor editorial judgement, failing to report on the newsagencies currently experiencing double-digit growth.

The story in Sale is one of personal transition, not industry collapse. Terry Stewart is closing his doors after 38 years because he is ready to retire, not because the business failed. He noted that the industry has been “really good” to him. Yet, the media narrative persists in “talking down” the channel, ignoring the reality of the 1,800+ newsagents Tower Systems serves, many of whom are thriving.

There is a significant “tell” in the ABC’s reporting. The article mentions that the products in the Sale newsagency had not changed much over the decades. In the modern retail landscape, this is the exception, not the rule. Among the most successful newsagents in the Tower Systems community, much of what they sell today is entirely different from their inventory a decade ago. from the ABC story, Sale appeared to not have changed.

Success today is driven by aggressive diversification. Thriving newsagents have moved far beyond the “agent” model. They are now destinations for high-margin giftware, collectible toys, specialized stationery, and unique home décor. These businesses are using data-driven insights to pivot their stock mix, meeting the demands of a new generation of shoppers.

By focusing on a business that remained largely static, the ABC provides a skewed and inaccurate view of the industry’s health. They overlook the innovators who are breaking sales records and revitalising their local high streets. The newsagency channel is not disappearing; it is being redefined by those willing to evolve their product mix and embrace modern retail strategies.

At Tower Systems, we see good stories every day. We see the growth, the reinvestment, and the success stories that the national broadcaster chooses to ignore. While we acknowledge the end of a long career for a newsagent like Terry, we refuse to accept a narrative of decline. The newsagency of the future is here, it is profitable, and it is vastly different from the one the media prefers to profile.

We are grateful to serve Australian newsagents.

Making Advanced Technology Accessible for Small Business Success Through POS Software

M

In a rapidly evolving retail landscape, many small business owners feel overwhelmed by the fast pace of technological change. It’s common, and it’s okay.

At Tower Systems, we understand that software and artificial intelligence can seem daunting, especially when the inner workings are unfamiliar. However, our goal is to bridge this gap, transforming complex tools into practical assets that empower independent retailers to thrive alongside larger competitors.

A Personal Approach to Technology

We believe that no business should be forced to adopt technology before they are ready. Every retailer must move at a pace that suits their specific needs and comfort level. Our role is to provide clear, plain-English explanations that demystify how point-of-sale systems and AI function in a real-world setting.

By using actual business data, we demonstrate the tangible benefits of these tools, making them accessible even to those who do not consider themselves technically minded. Whether you are a seasoned retailer in your eighties or a young entrepreneur starting out, our resources are designed to ensure you can master the software with confidence.

Comprehensive Support and Training

A significant part of making technology accessible is providing the right support structure. We offer a variety of training materials, including:

  • Extensive Online Resources: A wealth of information is available at any time to help you navigate the system.
  • Instructional Videos: Visual guides provide step-by-step walkthroughs of key features.
  • Human-Based Customer Service: Our team is dedicated to providing patient, ongoing assistance for as long as you need it.

Our commitment to training has no set time limit; we are here to support your learning journey until you feel completely comfortable managing your digital tools.

Competing on a Level Playing Field

The ultimate purpose of integrating AI and advanced software is to provide independent shops with the same advantages enjoyed by big-box retailers. Our AI tools are developed to deliver reliable, useful results that build confidence and drive more successful business outcomes.

By making these high-level tools accessible to local, family-owned businesses, we help create a more balanced retail environment. Technology should not be a barrier to success, but a catalyst for it. If you have been hesitant about the digital future, we are ready to partner with you to make that transition smooth, practical, and rewarding.

POS Software Solutions Tailored for Fabric, Sewing and Haberdashery Retailers

P

Independent fabric, sewing, and haberdashery stores occupy a unique niche in the retail landscape. These businesses are often family-owned and deeply rooted in their local communities, serving a dedicated group of makers and hobbyists. Managing such a specialised inventory, ranging from high-value sewing machines to items sold by length or weight, requires more than a generic point-of-sale system. Tower Systems has developed a software solution specifically designed to address these distinct operational needs.

We are proud of our POS software for sewing, fabric and haberdashery shops.

Managing Diverse Inventory with Precision

A challenge for haberdashery retailers is the variety of ways products are sold. Fabric is often measured by the metre, while certain craft supplies might be sold by weight. Our software facilitates these transactions seamlessly, ensuring accurate pricing and stock levels regardless of the unit of measure.

You can sell by product code, barcode or do an easy lookup.

For businesses selling high-end equipment like sewing machines, which can range significantly in price, tracking individual units is essential. POS POS software includes serial number tracking to monitor high-value inventory and manage warranty information effectively. Furthermore, the software can track repairs and servicing for customer machines, providing a comprehensive history of maintenance for each unit.

Supporting the Maker Community

Specialty craft stores are often the hub for local sewing clubs and community groups. Our software includes tools to support these relationships, such as managing member discounts and facilitating fundraising efforts for community organisations.

Special orders are another common requirement in this sector. When a customer requires a specific pattern or a particular fabric not currently in stock, the system tracks the order from the initial request through to arrival. This ensures that staff are alerted immediately when the item is ready for collection, enhancing the customer experience.

Integrated Business Operations

In today’s retail environment, an online presence is vital. The Tower Systems point-of-sale software connects directly to Shopify, allowing retailers to sync their physical and digital storefronts. This integration ensures that stock levels remain accurate across all channels.

Beyond inventory management, the software links with essential business tools like Xero for accounting, Deputy for staff scheduling, and various loyalty tools designed for infrequent shop visits. The rental of specialised equipment can also be managed through a recurring billing feature.

Comprehensive Support for Independent Retailers

We are committed to supporting local, independent businesses. Our software license includes installation on an unlimited number of computers within the store, providing flexibility as the business grows.

Retailers have access to a robust help desk, an extensive multilingual knowledge base, and after-hours support for urgent system queries. By providing tools specifically built for the fabric and haberdashery trade, we help independent owners focus on what they do best: serving their community of makers.

Bridging the Gap: Advice For Small Business Retailers On Integrating Your Physical Store with a Seamless Online Presence

B

For a local specialty retailer, transitioning into eCommerce can feel like an overwhelming hurdle. It is no longer enough to simply have a website; modern retail requires a digital presence that works in lockstep with in-store operations. Achieving this synergy requires a partner who understands the complexities of inventory management, margin control, and the unique needs of the Australian retail landscape.

It’s risky. Web development is unregulated and there are people out there scamming business owners. Take your time. be careful.

Based in Hawthorn, Victoria, Tower Systems provides a specialised Shopify development service designed specifically for independent retailers. Whether you manage a newsagency, a garden centre, a toy store, or a boutique, the goal is to create a professional digital storefront that is fully integrated with your point-of-sale software.

The value of local expertise

A significant challenge in the current market is the prevalence of web development firms that outsource their work. While these options may appear cost-effective initially, they often result in cultural gaps or technical solutions that are not tuned to the Australian market.

The development work at Tower Systems is performed entirely in-house by a team based in Melbourne. This ensures clear communication and a deep understanding of local consumer behaviour. By keeping the process local, the focus remains on quality and commercial effectiveness. You work directly with people who are personally invested in the success of your business.

A transparent, fixed-price approach

Transparency is vital when investing in technology. To remove the guesswork, the service is offered on a fixed-price basis. This means the costs are clearly defined from the outset, allowing you to plan your budget with confidence. The process begins with a comprehensive consultation to scope your requirements and ensure the solution is a genuine fit for your needs.

This service is structured to empower retailers rather than to profit from the build itself. The standard package includes the selection of a premium Shopify theme, full POS integration for seamless data transfer, and a personal two-hour training session. To ensure a smooth transition, the service also includes three months of post-launch support and a detailed handover guide for ongoing management.

Practical steps for eCommerce success

Launching a successful Shopify store requires more than just technical setup; it requires a retail-first strategy. Here are several principles to guide your journey:

Define your primary goal: Determine if your focus is on attracting new customers, growing total revenue, or providing better service to your existing local base. This clarity will dictate your design and marketing decisions.

Curate your inventory: You do not need to list every item from your physical shop online. Start with a curated selection of best-sellers or unique products to make the site easier for customers to navigate.

Prioritise original content: Search engines reward unique descriptions and images. Avoid generic supplier content and instead write your own titles and descriptions that reflect your brand’s voice.

Simplify logistics: Start with a straightforward, flat-rate shipping structure. You can introduce more complex freight options once you understand your online customers’ buying habits.

A website is a living asset that requires regular attention through social media engagement and customer emails. By partnering with a local team that understands both the software and the strategy, you can build a digital storefront that truly supports your long-term growth.

Listening to the Front Line: How Customer Ideas Drive Our Software Development

L

POS software should not be a static tool. As the retail landscape shifts, the technology you use to manage your business must evolve alongside it. At Tower Systems, we believe the best insights for this evolution come directly from the people using our point-of-sale software every day in their shops.

For 16+ years, we have maintained a dedicated platform called Software Ideas for our POS software customers. This facility is a core part of our development cycle, providing every customer with a direct line to our development team. It is a transparent, collaborative space where the future of our software is shaped by those who understand the practical needs of retail best.

A Transparent Process for Real-World Solutions

The concept is straightforward: any Tower Systems customer can submit a suggestion for a software enhancement. Once a suggestion is posted, it becomes visible to our entire user community. Other retailers can then view these ideas and cast their votes for the features they find most valuable.

This process serves several vital functions:

  • Direct Feedback: It provides us with a clear, data-driven resource to consult when planning our next software updates.
  • Prioritisation: Voting helps us identify which enhancements will have the most significant positive impact on the broadest range of businesses.
  • Community Knowledge: Sometimes, a user might suggest a feature that already exists. In these cases, our software development manager provides feedback to show the user where to find that specific tool.
  • Refinement: If an idea is new but needs more detail, we engage in a two-way conversation with the retailer to fine-tune the concept before it moves toward development.

Innovation Through Collaboration

Every update we release includes enhancements that originated from our customers. We take pride in this collaborative approach and make it a point to credit the retailers behind these ideas in our update notes. It is our way of saying thank you for helping us build a more robust and effective tool.

We believe this level of openness creates certainty. Our customers know their voices are heard and that they have a genuine stake in the tools they rely on to run their businesses. If you find that your current software provider is not listening to your needs or providing a way for you to influence the product’s direction, it may be time to consider a different approach.
